April 10 2003 NEWS!
I've noticed that there are a growing number of images in the gallery that seem to be decaying. If you have images in the gallery and you notice that some of them are looking a little ragged, please send in replacements. I'm not 100% sure as to the cause, but I suspect it has something do do with the image pre-processor I was using to make thumbnail images. So, please. Send replacement images if you can. Thanks!
Byron NEWS from Barney Berns! What I think of pinhole photography, by Dave Clarridge
It seems that most of what is written, and discussed, about photography centers on optics, film speeds and curves, the latest and greatest equipment, zone systems........ All valid issues which, to me, miss the real point of it all. What I love about photography is that it is magical. Today I still get that funny feeling that came over me the first time I saw an image come up in the developer. What I love about pinhole photography is that it is MAGICAL . Without all the expensive gadgetry I am able to capture what I feel, more than what I see. One never knows exactly what you're going to get with a pinhole camera until the film is developed. And what appears is something only a pinhole camera can see. It's as though a parallel universe is opened up to us.

Pinhole Photography - History, Images, Cameras, Formulas
By Jon Grepstad [This article is also available at photo.net and Pinhole Visions in the USA.]
Introduction
Pinhole photography is lensless photography. A tiny hole replaces the lens. Light passes through the hole; an image is formed in the camera. Pinhole cameras are small or large, improvised or designed with great care. Cameras have been made of sea shells, many have been made of oatmeal boxes, coke cans or cookie boxes, at least one has been made of a discarded refrigerator. Cameras have been cast in plaster like a face mask, constructed from beautiful hardwoods, built of metal with bellows and a range of multiple pinholes. Station wagons have been used as pinhole cameras - and rooms in large buildings. Basically a pinhole camera is a box, with a tiny hole in one end and film or photographic paper in the other. Pinhole cameras are used for fun, for art and for science. Designing and building the cameras are great fun. Making images with cameras you have made yourself is a great pleasure, too. But in serious photography the pinhole camera is just an imaging device with its advantages and limitations, special characteristics and potentials. By making the best of the camera's potential great images can be produced. Some of the images could not have been produced with a lens.
Characteristics
Pinhole images are softer - less sharp - than pictures made with a lens. The images have nearly infinite depth of field. Wide angle images remain absolutely rectilinear. On the other hand, pinhole images suffer from greater chromatic aberration than pictures made with a simple lens, and they tolerate little enlargement.

If you want to play with your intuitions and you're interested in a more mysterious image, pinhole might be what you want. Pinhole can also be a very inexpensive and easy way to obtain a large negative, useful for non-silver printing. You don't need to know f stops, worry about whether your battery is working, or carry around a lot of different lenses. What you'll need is a sense of humor and an appreciation for discovery!
To do pinhole, all you really need is a light-tight box. Almost anything can be turned into a camera. All kinds of light-sensitive materials (both black and white and color film and photo paper) will work. And it's easy to make a pinhole, or pinholes for multiple imaging.
An image comes through the pinhole at about a 150 degree angle, which in photo terms is a very wide angle. If the distance from the pinhole to the film is 3" that means that this wide angled pinhole image circle hitting the film will be 10" in diameter or so. If you use a 6" deep suitcase as a camera you can get a 20" wide image. (The diameter of the image is approximately 3-1/2 times the distance between the film and the pinhole.)
Using various focal length (distance from pinhole to film) cameras with the same size 4" x 5" film gives you superwide, wide, or normal angles of view. An example of this is Figure 1.1. To make these three images, the three different focal length 4" x 5"

Dove D è il diametro del foro espresso in mm; è una "costante", espressa in mm, che tiene conto della lunghezza media della radiazione usata per esporre, che in questo caso corrisponde alla luce a cui sono sensibili i film pancromatici, circa 500 nm;
