  • The City of Stuttgart: Cultural and Industrial Activities The MSc Programme in Physics Physics is concerned with problems that range from minute particles to the universe as a whole. Quantitative methods are used to analyse the apparent complexity of the system in which we live. For this reason, the methods and results from this science are often applied to other fields such as Chemistry, Biology or Engineering. Graduates of the MSc in Physics will have experienced a balanced but diverse period of postgraduate studies and will be qualified to find employment in a wide range of professions. Physics graduates do not only find employment in universities or research laboratories but will frequently be found in computer companies, management consultants or in the field of telecommunications. The MSc in Physics at the University of Stuttgart is taught entirely in English and takes two years (four semesters) including a one-year thesis. Upon completion of this programme you will be awarded a degree which is equivalent to the German degree of "Diplomphysiker" and a qualified graduate of this programme will be entitled to continue to study towards a doctoral degree in Physics at a German university without having to fulfil additional academic requirements. International students are offered a six-week intensive Intercultural Training programme which has a strong German component. This, together with the "Welcoming Service" of the University of Stuttgart, will provide you with the help you need when making your first steps towards starting your studies and feeling at home in a new environment.

Backflow in a Fermi liquid and the Landauer resistivity dipole
We discuss the local backflow currents around impurities in the presence of a finite transport current. The leading contribution far from the scattering center is radial and decays like 1/r^2. It is caused by the current induced density modulation predicted by Landauer. The familiar 1/r^3 dipolar backflow obtained in linear response by Pines and Nozieres is only the next to leading term, which we calculate to arbitrary orders in the scattering potential. For charged impurities the condition of perfect screening gives rise to a novel sum rule for the phase shifts. We discuss the relation to backflow in a classical liquid and the perspectives of monitoring local current distributions with scanning probe techniques.

Fundamental Physics: General Relativity
The reduction of the Hipparcos data necessitated the inclusion of stellar aberration up to terms in ( v c , and the general relativistic treatment of light bending due to the gravitational field of the Sun (and Earth). The GAIA data reduction requires a more accurate and comprehensive inclusion of relativistic effects, at the same time providing the opportunity to test a number of parameters of General Relativity in new observational domains, and with much improved precision. The rigorous formulation of the GAIA data analysis problem is considered separately in Section 9.3.

General Overview
The medical physics division of our department is responsible for clinical medical physics activities and research and development of new techniques, including neutron therapy physics, treatment planning and CF-252, etc. The medical physics also administers one of the largest Masters and PhD graduate program in the United States. The medical physics division is active in teaching programs at WSU. This includes 900 class hours of teaching in the graduate medical physics programs, and associated research direction. In addition we teach 100 class hours of physics and radiobiology in the residency program and 190 class hours in the Allied Health Radiotherapy Technology Program. We also teach in the Radiology Residents Training and Cancer Biology Programs. In 1995, the total classroom time for medical physics faculty was 1,200 hours. Several members of our medical physics faculty were involved in programs primarily aimed at support of medical physics education in developing countries. Members of our faculty frequently participate in courses and workshops abroad. We have also helped to train physicists who have visited us for one to three months on UICC or IAEA Fellowships from Countries such as Pakistan, India, Tanzania, Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, and Thailand. Dr. Ezzell served as a visiting IAEA expert in Egypt in 1995. Through our faculty efforts we have helped to establish Medical Physics Libraries in 71 developing countries worldwide through a book donation program.

General Information Regarding the Physics Program
Villanova Physics Academic Program

The Physics Department offers a program which combines a flexible curriculum in all areas of theoretical and experimental physics with a strong liberal arts component. Course work for a physics degree includes the study of thermodynamics, electromagnetism, electronics, classical and quantum mechanics, nuclear physics, computational physics, and mathematical physics. The department also offers advanced courses in both the fascinating world of theoretical physics and the intricacies of the experimental realm. In addition, physics majors take two semesters of chemistry and four courses in the math department from calculus to differential equations. Research Opportunities
Every summer, three to five research assistantships are granted to undergraduates of good academic standing. Each is typically in conjunction with the research of a faculty member. Some of these opportunities allow for the student to gain a flavor for the details of running an actual experimental laboratory while others provide the student with insight into the processes associated with the theoretical physicist. Summer work is typically done in the department's facilities but on occasion may take place at a cooperating university or a national laboratory. Results of such research are often published in professional journals with the articles including the name of the assisting student(s).
