What the CinemaScope attachment actually does is to take in an angle of vision, horizontally, two times that which the photographic lens does without the

cases less, than if the picture had been made in the older methods. CinemaScope pictures provide a presentation which stimulates the wide angle experience of human vision and because of this most scenes can be staged with fewer cuts and camera angles than were formerly necessary. This, is a big economic saving because the additional angles required by the older technique were time-consuming and as a result, costly to make. Another misconception is that the size of the sets must be larger. Perhaps I can point out why, with CinemaScope pictures they usually call for less construction and to do this I had better start at the beginning and explain how the CinemaScope optical units work.

The human eye is capable of seeing only a tiny portion of the electromagnetic spectrum whereas photographic film can be used to record a vastly greater range. Special filters and films are utilized to permit differentiation between materials which to the naked eye appear identical and make invisible details clearly distinguishable. • Setting The Scene - Angles Very often, there is a strong temptation just to point the camera and shoot. But one of the easiest ways to improve your pictures is to spend one or two minutes thinking about the image. For example, a tall subject - such as a doorway - might well be improved by taking the picture upright rather than in landscape format. This emphasises the height of the subject.
Try moving around the subject to take the best possible shot and where possible go in close to fill the frame. Shooting the picture from above - or below - the subject will give different perspectives. In short, don't just see a picture, take it and then move on - experiment with three or four different shots.

Note: this article contains some photographic images. These are best viewed with a 'true colour' graphics card. If you have a 256-colour card these images may not be so accurate. A round the corridors and meeting rooms of many photographic societies, photographers are wearing their most concerned expressions as they consider this new monster. It's called digital photography and many are looking at it as if it were some particularly virulent disease which is threatening the survival of many endemic species of photographers. Seriously though, will digital photography have such an impact on photography as we know it, or will it be just another category to be added to monochrome prints, colour prints and colour slides? Just as colour photography didn't stifle the monochrome film and the 35mm film did not obliterate the medium format camera, digital photography could quite easily coexist with traditional techniques. One thing is certain however - it's here. Today. The first step before taking a decision to ignore or embrace it is to find out what digital photography is - and isn't. This article aims to introduce some of the aspects of digital photography, using terms which hopefully can be understood by anyone with some knowledge of photography while covering the topic in reasonable depth.

    Digital Photographic Techniques -
    Computer-Enhanced Images
T here are two main categories of digital photographs. The first, computer- enhanced images, is probably the most popular. The second category, computer- generated image, will be dealt with in the next page. So, once the problems of scanning an image into the computer and printing the final results are behind us, we can delve into the more interesting bit - what to do in between. Because here, with its number- crunching muscle to power it, the computer comes into its own. We already mentioned that the photograph, via the process of scanning, is converted into numbers - each number representing a shade of a particular colour. By manipulating these numbers, the computer can perform a wide variety of tasks. In order to work with a photograph, a graphics editor is used. Each different brand has its own unique features to offer. These range from simple ones like converting an image to its negative, or solarisation, to the more complex filters, for example to convert a photograph into the appearance of an oil painting or water colour. Apart from these there are the normal 'painting' tools, which allow you to retouch the photograph, darkening an area or removing an unsightly defect. Let us first take a look at a few of the filter effects offered by some programs. These are the easiest to use - just apply them to a photograph and see if you like the result.

    Some Basics on Photographic Techniques
Following are some tips on how to achieve stronger photographs based on composition and impact. This article is geared toward the Class B members we have in the club but can be equally useful to advanced photographers. To begin, my opinion is a photograph need only please the photographer to be worthwhile. A hundred judges could shoot the picture down, but if the photographer enjoys the photo, then that's good enough. If the image is to be entered into competition however, then it has to please more than just the maker. One thing that helps is to have interest in a picture, especially if it is to be shared with others. When you add impact to the interest, then you have a real prize winner. So, what is impact? It's hard to define. When a picture has impact, you know it. It grabs you and draws emotion from you. It's the picture that elicits "oohs" and "aahs" from the audience. "Not very descriptive", and "I know what it is but not how to get it", you say? OK, let me just say that impact can be achieved by the creative use of the basic techniques that follow. Let's start by talking about balance. Balance adds stability and interest to your picture and is the secret of good composition. Balance is achieved by the relative size and position of the elements in the picture. Large or heavy objects should be balanced by smaller or lighter objects. A good example can be found in flower photography. Where one blossom may be fully open and pretty, the picture can be made much stronger by the addition of the bud of another blossom.

The word photography is derived from the Greek words for "light" and "writing" and was first used by John Herschel in 1839. During that year, the conception of the photographic process was made public. Among the first to successfully create a photograph were Hippolyte Bayard and William Henry Fox Talbot. In recent years photography has grown even more diverse as artists are abandoning traditional 20th Century subjects and styles and focusing on the imagery of popular culture. Advertising and movies are the typical outlets for such creativity. The fascination with such subjects has led to use of the term "postmodernist," which signifies the end of earlier 20th Century styles and interests. Included herein are links related specifically to photography clubs and groups.

For both amateur and professional photographers, these organizations can be very instrumental in the development of photography skills and may also foster an interest in photography. Many allow web space to display photographs, keep members abreast of developments in contests and new equipment, and serve as educators at both the beginning and intermediate levels. You may also find information regarding formal classroom training, information on workshops and other photography-related events, and classifieds where you can find equipment.
