When the shutter of a camera is clicked, light reflected from the image to be photographed falls upon the film in the camera, changing the grains of silver salts on the film, and recording the image. When the film is developed, the grains are converted into black metallic silver, which makes the image visible. The resulting negative image is then placed in a fixing solution, which prevents the image from being affected by further exposure to light. Included herein are links related specifically to photography and photographic techniques.

Written by pros, including the latest features from Photoshop 7, the authors of Professional Photographic Techniques will reveal not only how to recreate darkroom techniques without turning out the lights, but also how to create images well beyond traditional barriers. Of course, you don't need to be a pro to benefit from the knowledge in these pages; this is the perfect handbook for anyone who cares about photos. Fully illustrated in color throughout, the text is organized into a series of examples that provides a comprehensive guide to image manipulation on Photoshop 7 - everything from the glamour of magazine retouching, through restoration work to the nitty-gritty of color reproduction. Because the authors remember the days before Photoshop existed, they can show you how to achieve chemical-free equivalents for all the old tricks as well as plenty of new ones.

A Brief Look at Techniques in Astronomical Photography
by David Malin
About the colour images - an outline
Most Anglo-Australian Observatory colour photographs are made with the Anglo Australian Telescope (AAT) or the UK Schmidt Telescope (UKST). SA few in our collection have been made by plates taken with the Isaac Newton Telescope on La Palma and two pictures of the Crab Nebula were made from plates taken many years ago with the Hale 5m telescope (see Malin and Pasachoff, Discovering the Color of the Crab Nebula in the July, 1993 edition of Sky and Telescope
When the AAT is used as a camera it has a focal length of 12.7 metres and a focal ratio of F/3.3. The square field covers one degree of sky (about two moon diameters on a side) and the images are recorded on special black and white photographic emulsions coated on glass plates 255 mm (10 inches) square. The UK Schmidt is primarily a photographic survey telescope and has a focal length of 3.07m with a focal ratio of F/2.5. It photographs a 6.6 x 6.6 degree field on plates or film 356 mm (14 inches) square.
The colour images are created by combining three separate, black and white exposures with combinations of plates and filters designed to record blue, green or red light. For the faintest objects exposures of 90 minutes are required for each colour. The monochromes are then manipulated, enhanced and combined photographically to produce the final picture, which show the object much as it might appear in the telescope if our eyes were much more sensitive to the colour of faint light. It is these techniques that are described here. For more background on the practicalities of please click

There are 10 mini-exhibits available. They are described in greater detail below but briefly they are: 1. High Speed, Scientific and Technical photographs, 2. Phoenix Portraits, 3. Phoenix Process based Peripheral Portraits, 4. Phoenix Process Figure Studies, 5. Panoramic Photographs, 6. Peripheral and other strip photographs, 7. Additional high speed and stroboscopic photographs and 8. More scientific and technical photographs 9. Just pictures 10. Caique parrots 11. Some Water Splashes Exhibit 1 : High Speed, Technical and Flow Visualization Photographs
This set of photographs includes images of a bullet's impact on rubber bands and a lime, Schlieren photographs of warm air rising from candles and a bullet's shock waves in air, a peripheral self-portrait and a photograph made as the Endeavour Shuttle was taking off. This photograph was made during a field trip I took with my students to the Kennedy Space Center in March 1995. You'll also see wasps flying, Comet Hyakutake, a slit-scan special effect photograph and several more "unlikely" images made with unusual techniques or processes associated mostly with scientific and technical photography. Exhibit 2 : Portraits with Phoenix Process
These are six black and white photographs, 5 of which are Phoenix Process derivations. Photograph Number 5, a Phoenix version, was made from the Polaroid 667 paper negative that produced the "standard" Polaroid print numbered 6.

, various techniques of producing permanent images on sensitized surfaces by means of the photochemical action of light or other forms of radiant energy; or the more recent techniques of capturing images by electronic means. Photography, then, is based on chemical and physical principles. The sensitivity of silver halides to light is the primary chemical principle. The physical principles are governed by optics, the physics of light. The generic term “light” refers to the visible portion of a broad range of electromagnetic radiation, which includes radio waves, gamma rays, X-rays, infrared, and ultraviolet rays. The human eye is sensitive to only a narrow band of electromagnetic wavelengths, the visible spectrum. This spectrum comprises the full range of colour tones. To the eye, the longest visible wavelengths register as red, the shortest as blue. set your screen here submit URL feedback guest book ... Jan Jedlicka . All rights reserved.
