I am a philosopher at the University of Arizona. Officially I am Professor of Philosophy and Director of the Center for Consciousness Studies . I work especially in the philosophy of mind , and in related areas of philosophy and cognitive science. I am especially interested in consciousness, but am also interested in artificial intelligence and computation, in philosophical issues about meaning and possibility, in the foundations of cognitive science and of physics, and a bunch of other things. This site includes quite a bit of my own work (e.g. papers on consciousness and papers on meaning and modality ), and it also includes a number of resources I've put together on topics related to consciousness and/or philosophy: e.g., annotated bibliographies , directories of online papers , and some philosophical diversions . There is also a photo gallery . A complete master index to this site's contents is available. WHAT'S NEW

Leibniz's Philosophy of Mind
But Leibniz has much to say about the philosophy of mind that goes well beyond these traditionally important topics. Perhaps surprisingly, his system sometimes contains ideas of relevance even to contemporary discussions in the cognitive sciences. More generally, he discusses in depth the nature of perception and thought (conscious and unconscious), and of human motivation and striving (or, as he would say, appetition). We will take up such topics in what follows.
1. Matter and Thought
Most of Leibniz's arguments against materialism are directly aimed at the thesis that perception and consciousness can be given mechanical (i.e. physical) explanations. His position is that perception and consciousness cannot possibly be explained mechanically, and, hence, could not be physical processes. His most famous argument against the possibility of materialism is found in section 17 of the

Contemporary Philosophy of Mind: An Annotated Bibliography
Compiled by David Chalmers , Department of Philosophy, University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ 85721. E-mail: chalmers@arizona.edu . (c) 2001 David J. Chalmers. Last updated: July 15, 2001. This is a bibliography of recent work in the philosophy of mind, philosophy of cognitive science, philosophy of artificial intelligence, and on consciousness in the sciences. It consists of 5702 entries, and is divided into six parts, each of which is further divided by topic and subtopic. Many of the entries are annotated with a brief summary. (I don't necessarily take responsibility for these annotations, many of which I wrote in the distant past.) The bibliography consists mostly of papers and books from the last few decades, with density of coverage increasing with proximity to the present. Most of the core areas of contemporary philosophy of mind are covered, but some areas (e.g. (philosophy of perception, philosophy of action, propositional attitude semantics, moral psychology) receive less coverage than others. A fuller table of contents is below. Part 6 is relatively new and is not annotated. It's not strictly "philosophy of mind", but I've put it here for convenience. Of course the division between parts is inexact. There is plenty of material by philosophers in part 6, and plenty of material by scientists in the other parts (especially parts 1, 4, and 5).

Philosophy of Mind
Online Resources Texts: Philosophy of Mind Used Books: Philosophy of Mind Know of a Resource? Unfolding Bodymind : Exploring Possibility Through Education by Hocking, Haskell, Linds Volume Three of the Foundations of Holistic Education Series U nfolding Bodymind Inspired by several streams of unconventional thinkingBuddhism, phenomenology, the holistic biology of Francisco Varela and Humberto Maturana, and an exquisite ecological sensibility such as that in David Abram's work ( The Spell of the Sensuous )the authors construct a strong philosophical foundation for a holistic understanding of knowing, teaching, and learning. To express their unfamiliar insights, many of them play with conventional language to make it serve a more holistic, relational view of the world. For example, the editors replace "understanding" with the term "interstanding"; several authors insert poetry and free verse into their essays; words are sometimes broken up with parentheses or slashes to emphasize their root meanings or their ambiguity. This book challenges the reader to step out of the linear, overly rational discourse that has conditioned our worldview.

Symposia What this page is and how to use it Philosophy of mind and the philosophical issues arising in the allied domain of cognitive sciences constitute a fast developing territory, which is very well introduced by a number of excellent web resources (see our choice at RECOMMENDED LINKS section). In the hope not just to follow the stream, but to be interestingly complementary to them, more focused views of specific regions will be supplied here. We call them GUIDED TOURS , each being an in depth exploration of a particular topic that comprises two parts: 1) a preliminary state-of-the-art report on the issue, which explains what the question is, how it arises and what ramifications result from it; how the debate goes on with all the theories, objections, proposed solutions, etc. 2) a bibliographical guide to the relevant literature, which consists of copiously annotated items. Such a bibliography does not aim at an abstract completeness, but it should reasonably cover all the material worth mentioning, or at least what so seems in the opinion of the author. As it is in the ‘field guide’ genre, the reader is provided with helpful signposts by experienced authors, but is encouraged to eventually take his own path. In the continuous effort of enlarging and keeping them updated, the ‘tours’ will be always in progress.
Annotated items can be individually searched in the

PARTS II (ON KANT’S CRITICAL PHILOSOPHY OF MIND) AND III (AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY) ARE IN PROGRESS.] PART I: KANT'S PRE-CRITICAL PHILOSOPHY OF MIND Although his critical views are more well-known, this tour will provide a detailed survey of Kant’s pre-critical philosophy of mind. I do this for two reasons: his pre-critical views are interesting in their own right, and understanding them provides vital context for understanding his critical position. It is the task the remainder of Part I of the tour to explain this Kantian solution to the mind/body problem. I have aimed this analysis—which requires some close textual exegesis and background information about Kant’s pre-critical metaphysics—at interested non-specialists, but I hope that this treatment of an important and much-neglected topic will also be of interest to specialists. SECTION 1: INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND I will begin by surveying several topics in Kant’s pre-critical philosophy that are essential for understanding Kant’s solution to the mind/body problem in Kant’s first philosophical publication

Theory in philosophy of mind which maintains that talk of mental events should be translated into talk about observable behavior.
    http://www.utm.edu/research/iep/b/behavior.htm
Behaviorism Behaviorism was a movement in psychology and philosophy that emphasized the outward behavioral aspects of thought and dismissed the inward experiential and sometimes the inner procedural aspects as well; a movement harking back to the methodological proposals of John B. Watson, who coined the name. Watson's 1912 manifesto proposed abandoning Introspectionist attempts to make consciousness a subject of experimental investigation to focus instead on behavioral manifestations of intelligence. B. F. Skinner later hardened behaviorist strictures to exclude inner physiological processes along with inward experiences as items of legitimate psychological concern. Consequently, the successful "cognitive revolution" of the nineteen sixties styled itself a revolt against behaviorism even though the computational processes cognitivism hypothesized would be public and objective not the sort of private subjective processes Watson banned. Consequently (and ironically), would-be-scientific champions of consciousness now indict cognitivism for its "behavioristic" neglect of inward experience. The enduring philosophical interest of behaviorism concerns this
