HISTORY OF MEDIEVAL PHILOSOPHY SYLLABUS (WEB EDITION) PHIL 223 GREG MOSES MARIST COLLEGE FALL 1995
    Description:
This course will survey the history of Medieval Philosophy as exemplified in the works of St. Thomas Aquinas (1225- 1274), where Latin, Greek, Islamic, and Hebrew philosophies are synthesized into a singular quest for human perfection. For St. Thomas, every voice is countable: Plato, Aristotle, Paul, Augustine, Boethius, Avicenna, Averroes, Maimonides, and others are considered for their various contributions to the whole truth of human existence. As St. Thomas brilliantly conveys his faith in Christian scripture, he also demonstrates that truth has allies among pagan, Jewish, and Moslem philosophers. Thus the spirit of approach is neither dogmatic nor sectarian, but diverse and plural. How can we do justice to fifteen centuries of Medieval Philosophy in fifteen weeks? In the works of St. Thomas we find a compendium and unification of Medieval Philosophy which may serve as a panoramic window to the vistas of its history.

    Medieval Theories of Conscience
Through conscience and its related notion, synderesis, human beings discern what is right and wrong. While there are many medieval views about the nature of conscience, most views regard human beings as capable of knowing in general what ought to be done and applying this knowledge through conscience to particular decisions about action. The ability to act on the determinations of conscience is, moreover, tied to the development of the moral virtues, which in turn refines the functions of conscience.
    Section 1: Background
Late medieval discussions of conscience derive from Peter Lombard's presentation of the concepts of conscience and synderesis in his Sentences In these discussions, constant reference was made to certain works by Plato and Aristotle. Neither Plato nor Aristotle explicitly mention conscience, however. It is their discussions of the virtues, practical wisdom, and weakness of will that form the critical backdrop to medieval discussions of conscience. These discussions were heavily influenced by Augustine's modification of these classical authors. For example, Augustine championed Plato's notion of the unity of the virtues, but he argued that love of God provided the unity to them. Moreover, he claimed that what pagan authors regarded as virtues were in fact vices unless they were developed for the love of God.

    Literary Forms of Medieval Philosophy
Medieval philosophical texts are written in a variety of literary forms, many peculiar to the period, like the summa or disputed question; others, like the commentary, dialogue, and axiom, are also found in ancient and modern sources but are substantially different in the medieval period from their classical or modern incarnations. Many philosophical texts also have a highly polemical style and/or seem deferential to the authoritative sources they cite. Further, medieval philosophical thinkers operated under the threat of censure from political and religious authority, moving them, some have argued, to write esoterically or to otherwise protect themselves from persecution. All these literary and rhetorical features make medieval philosophical texts considerably more difficult to understand and interpret than modern or even classical philosophical texts. Moreover, the broad range of genre in medieval philosophy raises questions about the nature of philosophical writing in general when compared to the much more restricted set of accepted forms in modern and contemporary philosophical works.
