(For religion groups see here I make no promises about the quality of discussion on these newsgroups; still, although at first it might seem as though there's nothing but the usual Usenet ranting, raving, and preaching, perseverance can sometimes pay off. I've had interesting discussions on some of these groups - but they've been few and far between, and it's important to know when to bail out (before you've been sucked into the inevitable ranting, raving, etc.). A couple of tips:
  • unless it's a religion newsgroup, never get involved in any discussion that touches, however obliquely, on religion (Usenet contains far more than its fair share of religious and anti-religious obsessive loonies);

    Your philosophy of teaching statement should reflect your personal values and the needs of your students and your department. At the least, you will want to address four primary questions, usually in this order. Menu

    1. To What End?
    It is important to start by describing where you want to end. In other words, what are your objectives as a teacher? The rest of your philosophy statement should support these objectives which should be achievable and relevant to your teaching responsibilities; avoid vague or overly grandiose statements. On the other hand, you will want to demonstrate that you strive for more than mediocrity or only nuts-and-bolts transference of facts. These are questions that will require some thought and you will probably benefit from discussing them with other faculty in your department. Some people can sit down and bang out a paragraph or two in a short time but most of us become more thoughtful about the "big" questions when we bounce them off of our colleagues, consider their responses, re-evaluate our positions, revise, talk some more, etc. Your statement of objectives as a teacher is the most important part of your teaching philosophy and you should take some time with it. And if you take it seriously, you will probably come back to this statement to revise or add to it. Think of it as a work in progress.

The following are current WLU IAGs: Inclusive Education This IAG is an opportunity for inclusive education advocates to join with whole language colleagues in developing effective literacy practices that include all learners. The goals of this IAG are to facilitate linkages between whole language and inclusive educators; to stimulate research in inclusive whole language classrooms regarding the impact of such practices with students experiencing disabilities; and to build alliances and local, state, and national working relationships between whole language and inclusive education. Inquiry/Multiple Ways of Knowing Participants of this IAG are interested in exploring inquiry-based curriculum within a multiple-ways-of-knowing framework—sign system, disciplinary, sociopolitical, and sociocultural perspectives. This IAG discusses both the theoretical underpinnings of inquiry/multiple ways of knowing methodology as well as the issues that arise in their practical applications in the classroom.
