Students must register into a specific discussion group. All four discussion groups meet together for the lecture sessions. A description of the four discussion groups follows: Section 1. Existentialism and Psychotherapy (Bank) - M 7 PM - This section is led by local therapist Stephen Bank, and will focus on psychotherapy from an Existential Viewpoint. The section leader writes, "We will read:

Existentialism and Human Emotions by Jean Paul Sartre..
Ten case studies of psychotherapy provide a starting point for discussing such questions as: are we really "free" to make choices or is our living determined by genetics, biology, or by the unconcious? What is freedom and to what extent can we hold ourselves and one another accountable for our actions (and inactions)? How does existential psychology/philosophy differ from some of the philosophical approaches covered in the lectures? " NOTE: The readings in Love's Executioner may make this section particularly of interest for students interested in pursuing careers in counselling or psychology.

Network and Netplay : Virtual Groups on the Internet by Fay Sudweeks (Editor), Margaret L. McLaughlin (Editor), Rafaeli, Sheizaf Rafaeli (Editor). The vast, international web of computer networks that is the Internet offers millions of users the opportunity to exchange electronic mail, photographs, and sound clips; to search databases for books, CDs, cars, and term papers; to participate in real-time audio- and video-conferencing; and to shop for products both virtual and physical. This huge conglomerate of links, hyperlinks, and virtual links is not just a technology for linking computersit is a medium for communication. The convergence of computer and communication technologies creates a social convergence as well. People meet in chat rooms and discussion groups to converse on everything from auto mechanics to postmodern art. Networked groups form virtually and on-the-fly, as common interests dictate. Like interpersonal communication, the networks are participatory, their content made up by their audience. Like mass-mediated communication, they involve large audiences. But the networks are neither purely interpersonal nor purely massthey are a new phenomenon.

Big-chat Big-chat is an e-mail discussion list which has been developed by the British Interactive Group (BIG), a forum for people involved in interactive education projects in the UK. Chat provides an active line of communication and an interactive network. The list is intended for BIG members to exchange examples of good practice and air their views. The list can also be used for publishing events, for news items and circulation of job adverts. The web site gives access to an archive of edited topics, and usage guidelines. Electronic discussion groups Exhibitions Chemical Heritage Foundation The Chemical Heritage Foundation (CHF) was founded jointly by the American Chemical Society and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. The aim of the Foundation is to promote the advancement of the "heritage and public understanding of the chemical and molecular sciences". The Foundation has an extensive historical research library and a research centre. It also provides educational support services to teachers, has a large publishing programme and designs touring exhibitions aimed at bringing achievements in the chemical sciences into the public domain. The web site provides information on all of these services as well as allowing access to the library's catalogue. It also has a useful list of links to related historical and chemical web sites and a link to the Chem-Hist mailing list. Chemical engineering Chemistry Electronic discussion groups Science - History ... Ethex The Exploratorium Museum’s Ethical Scenarios Forum is an Internet listserver designed to complement the Exploratorium exhibition, Diving Into the Genepool, also described in this database. With the cooperation of the International Bioethics Institution, Exploratorium staff, visitors, and ordinary members of the public discuss topics around the ethical, legal, and social implications of the Human Genome Project and other genetic topics. An archive of responses to three scenarios, Genetic Testing, Future Foods, Impropriety and Genetics Testing exists from 1995 and members of the public are encouraged to add their own voice to the debates. The site offers an internal search engine where users can search the message archive.

9.6 Online Discussion Groups
Usenet News Newsgroups are great sources of information, but please do the basic research online or at the library. Posting vague requests may reveal interesting and unique information found nowhere else, but quite often you will not receive any response. Supply enough information to make an accurate answer possible (such as age, citizenship, whether you are travelling with children etc). If you request visa advice, post your citizenship. "When posting questions or offering information, it is best to use a specific country-subject or city-subject as the first word in your title. This may mean multiple postings to cover your itinerary, but postings with general subjects, such as "Advice Wanted" or "Eurasia Travel" may get overlooked by most readers, and you will get few if any responses. And keep your geography straight when choosing which subtopic of a board to use: Istanbul is not in Asia, but Turkey is." <Larry Cotter> Many enjoy the discussions, some of them about places they have never been and probably will never visit. Sometimes an answer to someone else's post answers a question that others either cannot quite formulate, or did not think important enough to post. Many questions are answered by e-mail, even though this is a general discussion forum. You may have to send a request to the original poster for a collection or summary of responses, but don't be surprised if they don't manage to send it. People on the net, especially in popular tourist areas, may help you, but try not to use them as your personal travel agent. Some people will spend hours researching and answering. They appreciate and deserve a brief note to acknowledge that the information was recieved, and a thank you (which they rarely receive). If you really want to make them happy, let them know if you used their information, or what your experiences were. They have a genuine interest.

The Ford Foundation has provided funding to establish the COG Virtual Conference Center as a forum which can facilitate an ongoing discussion around the policy discussion topics listed below. These discussions will be facilitated from July 1999 through March 2000. At that time, a draft paper will be produced from each of these discussions aimed at developing policy and strategies to achieve their implementation in multiple countries. The paper will be discussed and revised in April and May 2000, and included in a final Ford project report in June 2000. You can follow the discussion by checking the archived summaries at this web site. By registering , you can also be included on a listserv to send and receive contributions to the discussion, and to participate in monthly live-time discussions.

Posted by: habadashary on Saturday, 16 October 1999, at 10:25 a.m. So you are stating that the chiropractic "philosophy" and chiropractors should consider the dynamics of tectonic plate movements, earthquakes, erosion, weather phenomena, etc.? And these things have to do with the chiropractic "philosophy" as it deals with the Innate Intelligence theory of the body? To understand the natural world would not one have to utilize the scientific method? And does not the chiropractic "philosophy" fail miserably with the works of empiricism? How can vitalism be ascertained through the scientific method? Does not the understanding of the natural world require the use of reductionism? Does not the understanding of the natural require observation of the material which can be studied by the senses? If this is the case how can we study an immaterial form such as Universal intelligence and Innate Intelligence? Re: To all you student loan whiners

    1A: About Mailing Lists
When you use e-mail, you are usually communicating with one individual or a small group of people known to you. Mailing lists offer the opportunity to take part in online discussions with a larger group of people who are interested in the particular topic that the list covers. Mailing lists utilize the e-mail system. Messages posted to the mailing list are sent automatically to the mailboxes of each subscriber. You may join a list or leave it at any time. Mailing lists can be local or worldwide and cover virtually any topic, from breeding petunias to splicing genes. Read mailing lists to learn about trends and hot topics and to share your own ideas. Search their message archives for information. Mailing lists are sometimes called listservs , although that is really the name of one software program used to manage mailing lists. Some other common mailing list programs are listproc and majordomo.
