ANCIENT ROMAN PHILOSOPHY
The single most important philosophy in Rome was Stoicism, which originated in Hellenistic Greece. The contents of the philosophy were particularly amenable to the Roman world view, especially since the Stoic insistence on acceptance of all situations, including adverse ones, seemed to reproduce what the Romans considered their crowning achievement: virtus, or "manliness," or "toughness." The centerpiece of Stoic philosophy was the concept of the logos. The universe is ordered by God and this order is the logos , which means "rational order" or "meaning" of the universe. After the death of Zeno of Citium, the Stoic school was headed by Cleanthes and Chrysippus, and its teachings were carried to Rome in 155 by Diogenes of Babylon. There its tenets were made popular by Panaetius, friend of the great general Scipio Aemilianus, and by Posidonius, who was a friend of Pompey (see your textbook if you don't recognize these names); Cicero drew heavily on the works of both. Stoic ideas appear in the greatest work of Roman literature, Vergil's

History of Philosophy: Ancient Course Syllabus
Required Text Julia Annas, ed., Voices of Ancient Philosophy: An Introductory Reader (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2001). Course Description This course is designed to introduce students to the basic problems and issues discussed by philosophers, scientists, religious figures, writers, and ordinary people of the ancient world. The course will be a survey course: rather than relying on a handful of primary texts, we will instead use a reader that organizes readings by topic rather than chronologically. This has the advantage of allowing students to gain a better overall appreciation of the scope of issues discussed by the ancients, and the variety of positions taken on these issues. In the second part of the course we will discuss metaphysical questions. We will begin by discussing some very perplexing and interesting paradoxes of Zeno. Using simple reasoning and propositions that seem obviously true, we will arrive at truly shocking conclusions, such as the claim that motion is impossible. We will also discuss Plato's Theory of Forms, paying close attention to the details of this theory and criticisms raised against it by Plato's contemporaries. Time permitting we will also discuss questions concerning the concept of causation, and puzzles about time.

Ancient Skepticism
Used in its most specific sense, the expression "ancient skepticism" refers to two movements in ancient philosophy. One is Pyrrhonism, which claims Pyrrho of Elis (4th-3rd c. B.C.) as its founder but was especially prominent during and after the 1st c. B.C. The other is Academic Skepticism, which encompasses a skeptical phase in the history of Plato's Academy (3rd to early 1st c. B.C.). Used more broadly and more loosely, the term "skepticism" is sometimes used in conjunction with a great many ancient thinkers who are not tied to these two movements, but are characterized by significant skeptical inclinations. The most important of these are Protagoras and Socrates, but one might also include Gorgias, Democritus, Aristippus and Diogenes of Sinope (the "Cynic"). While the views of these figures are sometimes mentioned in the present article, it focuses on the narrow notion of "ancient skepticism" and the figures and schools that it encompasses.
An Overview
Following Sextus Empiricus, we can say that the ancient "skeptic" (from a Greek verb meaning "to examine carefully") was an "investigator." He was someone who investigated the questions of philosophy but "suspended judgment" because he was unable to resolve the contrary attitudes, opinions and arguments that characterized the debated topics of philosophy, hence unable to arrive at a definitive position of his own on any of them. Instead of adhering to some standard philosophical position, the skeptic therefore described himself as someone who continues to investigate a "zetetic."

http://www.utm.edu/research/iep/s/skepanci.htm
Ancient Greek Skepticism Although all skeptics in some way cast doubt on our ability to gain knowledge of the world, the term 'skeptic' actually covers a wide range of attitudes and positions. There are skeptical elements in the views of many Greek philosophers, but the term 'ancient skeptic' is generally applied either to a member of Plato's Academy during its skeptical period (c. 273 B.C.E to 1st century B.C.E.) or to a follower of Pyrrho (c. 365 to 270 B.C.E.). Pyrrhonian skepticism flourished from Aenesidemus' revival (1st century B.C.E.) to Sextus Empiricus, who lived sometime in the 2nd or 3rd centuries C.E. Thus the two main varieties of ancient skepticism: Academic and Pyrrhonian. The term 'skeptic' derives from a Greek noun, skepsis, which means examination, inquiry, consideration. What leads most skeptics to begin to examine and then eventually to be at a loss as to what one should believe, if anything, is the fact of widespread and seemingly endless disagreement regarding issues of fundamental importance. Many of the arguments of the ancient skeptics were developed in response to the positive views of their contemporaries, especially the Stoics and Epicureans,

Greek Philosophy Table of Contents (Clicking on the links below will take you to that part of this article)
Presocratics Our western philosophical tradition began in ancient Greece in the 6th century BCE. The first philosophers are called "Presocratics" which designates that they came before Socrates. The Presocratics were from either the eastern or western regions of the Greek world. Athens home of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle is in the central Greek region and was late in joining the philosophical game. The Presocratic's most distinguishing feature is emphasis on questions of physics; indeed, Aristotle refers to them as "Investigators of Nature". Their scientific interests included mathematics, astronomy, and biology. As the first philosophers, though, they emphasized the rational unity of things, and rejected mythological explanations of the world. Only fragments of the original writings of the presocratics survive, in some cases merely a single sentence. The knowledge we have of them derives from accounts of early philosophers, such as Aristotle's Physics and Metaphysics The Opinions of the Physicists by Aristotle's pupil Theophratus, and Simplicius, a Neoplatonist who compiled existing quotes.

An important message to the users of Argos: Effective February 6th, 2003, Argos has been officially taken offline . Insufficient funding for regular upkeep and maintenance have made this necessary. Argos went on-line to the public on October 3rd, 1996. Within six months it had processed more than a million search requests. In the years that followed, Argos has served the academic community well. However, the expense of running a quality-controlled search engine exceeds our minimal budget.
