The Filipino-American Independence War from 1898 to 1902 ensued, killing 4,234 Americans and 16,000 Filipinos were killed in action and 200,000 died from famine and pestilence. (The Philippines lost and was colonized until 1946.) Philippine Menagerie Are these wildlife from a country in Africa or South America? Guess again. These are some of the animals found in the Philippines that most Filipinos know very little about.
Disaster Strikes the Summer Capital Meanwhile, in the middle of Baguio City, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, part of an international chain of luxury resorts, people were struck under rubble, some dying, some miraculously surviving after days of starvation and pain. Rescue workers were buoyed by the groans of the living and oppressed by the silence of the dead. Language, Literature and Liberation

The Company Product Profile History (Xerography) History (Haloid) ... About FXP Haloid : Little Company that Went for Broke The Haloid Company after World War II was headed for trouble. While revenues of the small Rochester, N.Y. firm were increasing, its earnings were shrinking, and the prognosis for improvement was poor. Since its founding in 1906 as a tiny company, Haloid had grown in a modest but consistent fashion by making and spelling photographic paper. Even during the horrible Depression years, when companies all over the nation were closing down, Haloid kept several hundred people fully employed, managed to turn a profit and even acquired a firm which made photocopying equipment. But after the booming war years, the Haloid market share began to shrink, and worse, there was nothing in the works to avert the inexorable decline. Joseph C. Wilson, who was about to assume Haloid's leadership from his retiring father, decided that the answer lay in acquiring a promising new technology. Young Wilson knew well the basic logic of the free enterprise system: Success depends on profit, profit depends on growth and growth depends on new ideas.

The Company Product Profile History (Xerography) History (Haloid) ... About FXP A deal was struck, with Battelle agreeing to do the development work for 60% of any royalties. Still, Battelle people were unsure of just what good use would come of this new process. Their ideas included a catalogue printer and a child's toy, as well as an office copier. Revenues from Copyflo were healthy, and by 1956, xerographic products - accounted for almost 40% of revenues. Inspired by its modest success, Haloid optimistically changed its name to Haloid Xerox in 1958. By that time it was well into a much larger effort: the development of a fast, cheap, convenient office copier. People didn't have one then. But they had plenty other options. Their development work was crucial. In selenium, Battelle researchers found an ideal photoconductor for a xerographic device. Known for years as one of the Earth's commonest chemical elements, selenium proved to be much more effective than the sulfur Carlson had been using. Battelle also devised the developer - a mixture of a dry ink particles (toner) and "carrier" beads that remains the basic formula today. But Battelle, like Carlson encountered difficulties finding a buyer. There was little interest until that day Wilson and Dessauer arrived from Rochester to have a closer look. A contract was signed effective January 1, 1947, which gave Haliod a license to develop a xerographic machine.

Philippine History 22,000 B.C. - The Tablon Caves show inhabitance of man for about 40,000 years. 1 B.C. - The rice terraces are built. 960 A.D. - The Philippines start trading with China. In Mindanao the Islam is introduced. The Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan arrives in the Philippines with the specific quest to conquest the archipelago. This is also the time Catholicism was introduced. Magallan was soon killed by Lapu-Lapu in the battle of Mactan. The first expedition had to return to Spain and only after further four expeditions Miguel Lopez de Legazpi succeeded the colonization of the Philippines. Miguel Lopez de Legazpi takes possession of Manila and declares it the capital of the Philippines. 1565 to 1821 - The Philippines was ruled by the Viceroy of Mexico for the Spanish crown. In the years of closer Spanish Mexican relationship Philippine galleons traveled regularly to Mexico. After Mexico became independent from Spain the Philippine were ruled directly from Madrid having a general governor residing in Malacanang Palace / Manila. In that period Catholicism manifested itself and the Philippines became the only Christian nation in Asia.

Antique Potteries and the Balanghais
The stability of an agricultural industry and a trading post resulted in the early Butuanons permanently settling in the area. The importance of Butuan during the time is manifested in it being mentioned in numerous historical maps. Just 5 kilometers from the City proper lies the graveyard of the Balangay 1 dated 320 A.D. or 1678 years old. This wooden plank-build and edge-pegged boats average 15 meters in length and 3 meters wide across the beam. To date, 9 Balangays have already been discovered in Ambangan, Libertad sites. Three have been excavated and others are still in Situ. In no other locality in the Philippines or Southeast Asia for the matter, has there been such a rare and extensive discovery of the maritime vessel and cultural relics associated with an affluent seafaring people in this part of the globe except in Butuan. Trade with other communities (from as far as China) is further evidenced by ancient potteries and porcelain wares found in various digs around the area.

However, archaeological findings suggest that there were earlier settlers. There were other waves of migrations of Indo-Chinese, who were followed by the Malayans. In 1521, the Portuguese voyager Ferdinand Magellan arrived and found the islands to be thriving centers of commerce with traders from India, Arabia and China. Powerful Islamic influence was established in 1380 the Arab-taught Makdum. However, the arrival of Magellan who claimed the archipelago for Spain facilitated the growth of Christianity and the emergence of a new culture.

CHINESE TRADERS, CIRCA 1200 A.D. As early as the 9th century, Chinese traders came to the Philippines. Their junks docked on the shores of the islands, bringing porcelain, silk, beads and lead sinkers for which Filipinos traded cotton, yellow wax, pearls, betel nuts, tortoise shells, coconuts, sweet potatoes, obacc cloth and coconut leaf mats. Chau Ju Kuo, a Chinese merchant, paid tribute to Filipino honesty. In an account written in 1225, the merchant stated that Filipinos would carry off Chinese goods to be sold inland and they would always return to bring back whatever payment was agreed upon. INTRODUCTION OF ISLAM, CIRCA 1300 A.D. The history of Southeast Asia indicates that Islam may have filtered into Sulu and Mindanao as early as the 9th century. In the Philippines, early evidence is furnished by a tombstone found in Mt. Data, Jolo, Sulu. The tombstone bears the inscription 710 A.D., or 1310 in the Christian calendar. The Maguindonoo of Cotabato maintain a tradition that Shorif Muhammad Kabungsuwan, a nobleman from Malacca, ancient Malaysia, brought Islam to them in 1515 and established the Sultanate. History of Islam in the Philippines

The Philippines: Then and Now (Excerpted from The Filipino Americans (From 1763 to the Present) Their History, Culture, and Traditions by Veltisezar Bautista.) The Philippines is located in the southeastern portion of Asia. Her neighbor on the north is the Republic of China (Taiwan or Formosa), while on the west is Communist Vietnam. Further west is Thailand. Immediately to the south of the Philippines is Indonesia and to the southwest are Malaysia and Singapore. The Philippines is separated from her nearby Asian neighbors by several bodies of water. They are the Pacific Ocean on the east, the South China Sea on the north and west, and the Celebes Sea and the coastal waters of Borneo on the south. I. LAND AND ITS PEOPLE The Philippines is an archipelago of 7,107 islands and islets. The biggest islands are Luzon, with a land area of 40,530 square miles (105,000 square kilometers); Mindanao, 36,670 square miles (95,000 square kilometers); Palawan, 5,749.86 square miles (14, 896 square kilometers); Negros, 5,278.55 square miles (13,675 square kilometers); and Samar, 5,183.59 square miles (13,429 square kilometers). She has a rugged land mass and, similarly, she has an irregular coastline, which is twice as long as that of the continental U.S.A. This irregularity has resulted in numerous fine harbors and landlocked straights that can accommodate large ships. They can also be a refuge of ships in distress during stormy weather. The land surface is 115,800 square miles (300,000 square kilometers). Land forms include hills, plains, valleys, and mountains. Her mountain ranges, which are volcanic in origin, are drained by small river systems. There are seven major mountain ranges. The largest and longest is Sierra Madre, which faces the Pacific Ocean on the eastern coast of Luzon. The highest peak is Mt. Apo, a volcano in Davao del Sur Province. It has an elevation of 9,691.60 feet (2,954 meters).

Henderson Consulting International
, Manila, Philippines An Oversimplified History Lesson June 1999 Even Western businessmen with extensive Southeast Asian experience in places like Hong Kong, Singapore, Jakarta, and Kuala Lumpur often don't know quite what to make of Manila. Sure, it's centrally located in the region, Manila's only a short hop away from the other major capitals, and the kamikaze taxi drivers weave around through the infinitely congested traffic more or less like they do in Bangkok. But . . . but . . . there's something about the Philippines that makes it very much a horse of a different color, something that's hard to put your finger on, but something very real nonetheless. To the uninitiated professional, doing business in Manila can seem somewhat surreal (think of HAL analyzing the situation rationally and concluding that things just don't quite compute). To use another '60s reference, Manila can really be a trip. If you think you can do business here like you can in London, Frankfurt, New York, or (as in my case) Los Angeles, you'd better think again . . . everything gets filtered through a rather fascinating cultural screen, and if you don't invest at least some effort in understanding the culture you might as well pack up your bags and go home. Why should doing business in Manila be so different from operating in neighboring lands? The answer can be found in the unique history and complex cultural amalgamation experienced by the Philippines over the last few centuries. From the moment Ferdinand Magellan spotted the distant peaks of Leyte looming in the morning mists of March 16, 1521, things were never the same again. The Spanish colonial era, dating from the 1570s, brought with it a nearly complete dominance of the Catholic Church and the imposing of the accompanying cultural values. In practice, what resulted was a complex blend of indigenous traditions with the substance and trappings of Catholicism.

The Past: Interactions with Spain and the United States In 1521, the first Europeans under Ferdinand Magellan explored the Philippines. Then, in 1542, a Spanish exploration party named the group of islands, the Philippines, in honor of Prince Philip, later Philip II of Spain. Spain retained possession of the island until 1899 when the United States received the Philippines through the Treaty of Paris under the Spanish American War. Meanwhile, the Filipinos desired independence because they were tired of being ruled by foreigners and as a result initiated guerrilla warfare against the US under Emilio Aguinaldo. For the United States, the subjugation of the people of the Philippines became a massive project that consumed more money and lives than the Spanish American War. In 1901, General Frederick Funston ended the insurrection through the capture of Emilio Aguinaldo. However, the question of independence burned on in the hearts of the people and Emilio Aguinaldo became a national hero. (image from www .encarta .com In 1913, when the Democrats came into power in the White House, they desired a smooth transition to self-rule for the Philippines. The Tydings-McDuffie Act of 1934 provided that the Philippines would be completely independent by 1946. In the period between 1934 and 1946, the Commonwealth of the Philippines formed under US supervision with Manuel Quezon y Molina as president. The people of the Philippines approved the selection of the president and the newly written constitution.

History of the Independence Movement in the Philippines
By Vicente G. Bunuan, Acting Director, Philippine Press Bureau
Congressional Digest 3 (April 1924): 228-229. T he movement for Philippine independence started soon after the implantation of Spanish sovereignty in the Philippines. At first it manifested itself in local uprisings against Spanish rule. Then it became nationwide in extent in 1896 when the entire country rose against Spain and after a prolonged armed struggle succeeded in taking away from the Spaniards the land which for almost three hundred and fifty years was under Spanish domination.
Revolutions Against Spain
1574 First known uprising against Spain. The First Governor in Manila ordered the residents to supply his troops food and took two of the leading Filipinos as hostages. After a time the Filipinos refused to submit to the imposition. The Governor ordered the hostages shot the Filipinos revolted. 1588 A revolt to expel the Spaniards from the Philippine Islands.
