PHILIPPINES: Norway Neocolonialist - Philippines History textbooks
Francisco Ramirez, Professor of Education and Sociology, checked on Norwegian neo-colonialism in his homeland. He writes: "Couldn't resist looking this up a bit on the Web, turns out that Mindex was acquired by Crew Development Corp, a fair-sized mining company, in 1999, so the bad guys are now Canadian! Though the Norwegians are still fully engaged, of course. In some Swedish textbooks the Vikings are now identified as long distance traders. I kid you not. This may be one more reason why a comparative study of textbooks over time would be interesting." My comment: It occurs to me that Francisco would be the right person to undertake the history textbook project. The School of Education Library could serve as a repository, and I would urge people in different countries to send him textbooks. What history textbooks are now being used in Israel, Iran,Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India? We may win the war, but if history books continue to preach hatred, we shall lose the peace. What about history textbooks in the Philippines and Indonesia? How about it, Francisco? Ronald Hilton - 12/19/01

On some of our partner domains, such as AsiaLove.org , we have previously accepted for site subscriptions payments remitted through PayPal. PayPal operates on the promise that it is easy to use its services. However, we have found that it was not possible for a substantial number of people to make remittances at all, and in the case of many of those who were able to send the money, we were not able to take it out from our PayPal account. When we researched PayPal’s business practices, we found that many, many people posted their complaints on the Internet. The most common complaint has been that they couldn’t get the money that other people had channeled into the PayPal system for them. Some reported that they lost thousands of dollars. In order to warn the public from channeling money into the PayPal system, we have set up the new website www.AboutPayPal.org

The Company has come a long way in terms of manpower, plant facilities, revenues and resources. Employing about 200 employees, 3M Philippines now conducts its business through its main office at the 18th to 21st Floors of PCIBank Tower 2 in Makati Avenue, Makati City, right in the heart of the central business district. It has expanded its distribution network throughout the Philippines, with the formation of three local branches in Cebu, Bacolod and Davao. The company sells about 10,000 products, most of which are being manufactured or converted locally such as printed box sealing tapes, flexible adhesives, contact cements (ceramics and vinyl adhesives), floor finish chemicals, rubbing compounds, rubberized automotive underseal coating and traffic control materials. In late 1999, with specialization and globalization being the trend in the new millennium, 3M Philippines handed over the management of its finished goods warehouse and logistic activities intrinsic to it to Metro Combined Logistics Phils., Inc. March 16, 1521 The Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan,

Lapu-Lapu resisted and successfuly defended against

[ 30,000 Years Ago... ] 30,000 years ago, the earliest forms of man were believed to have migrated from the Asian subcontinent to the Philippine Islands via land bridges formed during the Ice Age. People of the Negrito race came to the Philippines. Negritos can be described as a generally under five feet tall, flat nosed, dark skinned with curly brown hair. Later on, Indonesians of the Mongoloid race also settled in the islands Malaysians exploring the Southeast Asian borders came across the Philippine Islands in 200 B.C. and emigrated to the islands up until the early 13th century. They contributed greatly to Filipino culture, also introducing Islam to the southern islands. Malays are the ancestors of all Filipino tribes that exist today. Click on the map for a larger version. [ 1200 A.D. - The Legend of the Ten Datus ] Around 1200 A.D., the ten Datus were believed to have come from Borneo to settle in the Philippines. The Datus were tribal chiefs escaping from the cruel sultan of the Buddhist Sri Vijaya kingdom. They bought a piece of the Philippine island Panay from the Negritos. The accomplishments of the Datus: Datu Sumakwel divided the islands among three other Datus. Datu Kalantiaw created a code for the people to live by. And Datu Lapu-Lapu killed Magellan.

L Company and M Company of the 14 th United States Infantry existed on paper up till the declaration of war with Spain. After war with Spain was declared a dozen old non-coms from other companies in the regiment were sent to those two skeleton companies to form the nucleus of a wartime organization. When I enlisted on June 18, 1898, the regiment, less companies B and H, was encamped at Camp Merritt, San Francisco. Before going to the Philippines we had target practice at the Presidio rifle range. They gave us five rounds at 100 yards. They then gave us five rounds at 300 yards and I got 48 out of a possible 50 for which good work, I was congratulated by the company commander. It seems quite pitiful to think that we had but three weeks drill and ten rounds on the rifle range before being shipped away for active service. A few days before we sailed we had some sort of funny maneuvers out at the Presidio grounds now covered by the Presidio Golf Links.

History of Islam in the Philippines

U.S.-Philippines History Entwined in War Booty
    by James Brooke
    The New York Times
, 1 December 1997     On a wind-whipped military post first occupied by Army Indian fighters, Trophy Park contains some unusual war booty: two Spanish colonial church bells from the Philippines, each stamped with the coat of arms of the Franciscan missionaries.    Long ignored by drivers whizzing past the park at what is now Francis E. Warren Air Force Base here, the bronze bells are at the center of an international dispute and are emblems for rival views of American military history.    The bells are a symbol to both sides in a violent page of history from the turn of the century, known in the United States as the Balangiga Affair and in the Philippines as the Balangiga Massacre.      To Wyoming veterans, the bells are a reminder of the worst massacre of Army soldiers in the decades after Custer's defeat.    The tolling of the bells on September 28, 1901, signaled the start of a surprise attack by Filipino guerrillas that virtually wiped out an Army garrison in the village of Balangiga (pronounced bal-un-JEE-guh).    Of 74 soldiers in the unit, 45 were killed and 22 were wounded as guerrillas pressed their uprising against American rule. To Filipinos, the bells, captured in counterattack by American forces, are a reminder of reprisals in which troops were ordered to kill anyone over 10 years old, resulting in thousands of civilian deaths.     With the 100th anniversary of the Philippines' declaration of independence from Spain coming in June, the Philippines' Ambassador to the United States, Raul Chavez Rabe, has made two pilgrimages here in southeastern Wyoming, hoping to soften local public opinion.    At the recent Asia-Pacific economic conference in Vancouver, President Fidel V. Ramos of the Philippines appealed to President Clinton to return one of the bells and a copy of the other.

    History of the Philippines
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. History of the Philippines
    Ancient History
Various austronesian groups settled in what is now the Philippine islands by traversing land bridges coming from Taiwan and Borneo by 50,000 BC. Around 3000 BC, Malays , from what is now Indonesia and Malaysia , also entered the area.
    Early History
Since, at least, the 3rd century , Pilipinos were in contact with other east asian nations. They were, to varying extents, under the Hindu-Malayan empires of Sumatra Indochina , and Borneo and then, beginning with the Ming Dynasty , under the Chinese sphere of influence.
