Bad Sports:
U.S. Olympic Committee thumbs nose at Paralympics By Josie Byzek. Sidebar: Vertical Integration Josie Byzek writes frequently about disability rights. Not a single Olympic dollar will go to Paralympic athletes for the upcoming games in 2000. That was the word from U.S. Olympic Committee Executive Director Dick Schultz at a mid-April Colorado Springs meeting of the organization's Committee on Sports for the Disabled. No sponsorships would be pursued by the USOC for the Paralympics either, said Schultz. This will leave Paralympians effectively without funding for their events. For amateur sports in America, all roads lead to the U. S. Olympic Committee. The 1978 Amateur Sports Act required the USOC to involve disabled athletes, but "it was so gray the Committee could always wiggle out of having to do anything," says five-time Paralympic medalist Scot Hollonbeck. A 1998 amendment now makes the requirement clear. Yet USOC support is "just not there for Paralympians," says the U.S. Disabled Athletes' Fund's Andy Fleming. Lisa Lanier is an intense woman. Light brown hair frames a tanned, freckled face and determined, deep brown eyes. "Muscle-bound" is an understatement. Lanier's muscles come from hours of training as an amateur wheelchair fencer, an activity that takes up all the time left after working a full forty hours at Atlanta's independent living center. It takes virtually all her money, too.

HISTORY
Credit: Adam Pretty/Getty Images In 1948, Sir Ludwig Guttmann organised a sports competition involving World War II veterans with a spinal cord-related injury in Stoke Mandeville, England. Four years later, competitors from Holland joined the Games, and the international movement, now known as the Paralympics, was born. Olympic-style games for athletes with a disability were organised for the first time in Rome in 1960. In Toronto in 1976, other disability groups were added and the idea of merging together different disability groups for international sports competitions was born. In the same year, the first Paralympic Winter Games took place in Sweden.
PARALYMPIC GAMES
Credit: Matt Turner/Allsport The Paralympic Games have always been held in the same year as the Olympic Games. Since the 1988 Seoul Summer Games and the 1992 Albertville Winter Games, they have also taken place at the same venues as the Olympic Games. On 19 June 2001, an agreement was signed between the International Olympic Committee and the International Paralympic Committee aiming to secure the organisation of the Paralympic Games. The agreement reaffirmed that the Paralympic Games, from 2008 on, will always take place shortly after the Olympic Games, using the same sporting venues and facilities.
Since the Salt Lake 2002 Games, one organising committee is responsible for hosting both the Olympic and the Paralympic Games. Athletes from both Games live in the same Village and enjoy the same catering services, medical care and facilities. Ticketing, technology and transport systems for the Olympic Games are seamlessly extended to the Paralympics.

Overview
The Paralympics are a multi-sport, multi-disability competition of elite, world-class, disabled athletes, similar in scope to the Olympic Games. The Paralympic Games are held approximately two weeks after the Olympic Games in the same host city/country. The difference between the Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games is that the Paralympics provide an elite competition opportunity to athletes with a functional disability which precludes their involvement in open competition of the Olympic Games. Paralympic athletes go through rigorous training year-round to prepare for their respective events. They are the best of the best; who through determination and hard work, earn the honor of representing the United States on the competitive playing field. Britain's Paralympic athletes have beaten their gold medal tally record which was set in Atlanta in 1996. On Saturday, they won four more golds to take their haul to 41 in Sydney. Three of the golds came from the equestrian centre at Horsley Park. Lee Pearson landed his third gold medal of the Paralympics when he took the Individual Dressage Grade One Freestyle event at the Horsley Park Equestrian Centre in Sydney on Saturday. Pearson scored a total of 73.45 points to land gold, but team-mate Dianne Tubbs had to settle for fourth place, missing the bronze by just .44 of a point with a score of 68.55.
I expected maybe one medal out of this competition but to go home with three golds is absolutely fabulous, wonderful Lee Pearson The dressage team were also celebrating a gold medal.

"Paralympics not in the Shadow, but in the Light of the Olympic Games"
"In the same way as sport in general can not live of and benefit from the Olympic Games only, the chances for sport for athletes with a disability lie not only in the realization and the success of the Paralympic Games. But nevertheless are the Paralympic Games and the cooperation with the International Olympic Committee, which is an essential factor for the organization of the Games, the basis for everything else. The Public Relations department of the IOC is at the IPC's disposal for the presentation of their concerns and needs. Another equalization with the national Olympic Committees is to be seen in the future support of the national committees of the IPC for the participation at Paralympic Games given by the IOC.
