Anthropology museum to collect tribal art
By Amy Geiszler-Jones
Jerry Martin, director of the Lowell D. Holmes Museum of Anthropology, inspects an Asmat carving of ancestor figures. Martin will be heading to the Asmat region of Irian Jaya, Indonesia, later this month to begin an Asmat tribal art collection for the museum. Jerry Martin, director of the Lowell D. Holmes Museum of Anthropology, will leave later this month for a two-month expedition in the Asmat region of the Indonesian province of Irian Jaya. The province is the western half of the island of New Guinea, the second largest island in the world. It lies just below the equator, about 90 miles north of Australia. And despite those harsh, rugged conditions, Martin is relishing the opportunity made possible by a gift from WSU donors Barry and Paula Downing, who share his love for Asmat art. "It rarely happens that American (anthropology) museums collect from the field and start a major collection from the beginning where you can control the quality and you have the provenance of an item," says Martin. Provenance is the origin and history of an item. "Many collections donated to museums end up being wonderful pieces of art, but without that information they have little research value."

Cons
A bit graphic for young readers, storyline is a bit jumpy Full Review I am not what you would call a non-fiction afficionado. Generally speaking, I avoid non-fic like the plague, as I get enough of it crammed down my throat in school. :) However, with a title like, "Throwim Way Leg", I was intrigued. Furthermore, the cover was bright yellow, and it caught my eye. And of course, the word penis was displayed prominently on the cover along with a picture of native tribesmen in penis gourds. This might seem a juvenile way to come to reading such a book, but the hook worked, and I've read it through. As the Telefol might say, in a word, "Nais tumas!" (Wonderful!) Plot There isn't really a set plot in this book, but more a collection of stories that came as a result of Tim Flannery's obsessive interest in Papau New Guinea. Flannery's interest started when he was very young, and continued into his adulthood. As a mammologist, he was able to use his career in order to explore his interest more thoroughly - he went in search of

Documentary Films from Around the World
The 2001 Pennsylvania Film Festival was to be the host of a juried documentary competition. The Festival, which was scheduled to begin on September 12, was cancelled because of the events of September 11, and because of those events, we decided that it was not appropriate to continue with a competition. Instead, we selected a diverse group of films that address important economic, political, and environmental issues from an array of different cultural perspectives and screened these films as part of a memorial event held at the University of Scranton in November 2001. Using the Iban (who were once Borneo’s headhunters) and immigrant Chinese potters as a reference, the dilemmas of environmental and cultural change are discussed by Linden Cowell, New Zealand’s preeminent ceramic historian. The locations include New Zealand’s volcanic White Island and the rainforest of Borneo’s Sarawak region. Noise in My Backyard

    Introduction
This handbook deals with issues specific to living and working in Papua New Guinea. It is a starting point for thinking about the conditions that you will face as a cooperant. It won't have answers to all of your questions but it should be a useful starting point as you prepare to join us. If you would like more information on a certain subject, please contact the CUSO office in Madang. Please refer to the Cooperant Policy Manual, your Placement Description, the Health Manual, The Emergency Procedures Guide and the Country Health Risks sheet for more information.
Background Information on Papua New Guinea
    Geography
Papua New Guinea (PNG) lies just south of the equator and to the north of Australia. It is the last of a string of islands spilling down from South-East Asia into the Pacific and could be said to form a transition zone between the two areas. PNG occupies the eastern end of the island of New Guinea. In addition, there is a collection of islands, some rather large, around the main island mass (The country comprises over 600 islands, but 85 per cent of its mass is mainland).

In total an estimated 300 million people living in 70 countries are considered by the United Nations to be indigenous people.
I have compiled a list along with their cultural uniqueness's.
I owe a huge thanks to the musicologist David Livingston for setting out on his journeys to capture so many great recordings of our worlds indigenous people.
Much of this list owes a thanks to Ellipsis Arts for compiling a collection of musics and writings in a box set called Voices of the Forgotten World.

The Thailand Research Fund Scholar 1994-1997 E-mail: scptn@mahidol.ac.th Our current research efforts have been focused on different aspects of malaria caused by the parasite Plasmodium falciparum such as: the emergence of drug resistance parasite strains, mechanism of natural resistance to malaria infections, physiology of host-parasite interaction, unique parasite metabolic pathways, and antimalarial activities of Thai medicinal herbs and microbial secondary metabolites. To address the problem of multi-drug resistant Plasmodium falciparum strains in Thailand, we have conducted studies into the clinical pharmacology of antimalarial drug combinations, in healthy volunteers, in conjunction with in vitro determination of antimalarial activity of their drug-containing plasma. This would lead to searching for newer drug regimens. Results from our recent studies showed excellent in vitro synergy effects of mefloquine/quinine combination and at the moment we are focusing on the use of artemisinin or its derivatives in combination with some other antimalarials in order to reduce the recrudescence rate. We have also developed an in vitro microtest for P. vivax
