Paleontology - Palynology and Paleoecology Return to Paleontology Main Page Buy Books about Fossils and Paleontology Palynology is the study of microscopic plant fossils. The dominant component of Palynology is the study of pollen grains in sediments from the Quartenary, but anything plant and small qualifies such as fungal spores and algal remains such as diatoms and dinoflagellates. Paleoecology has been included on this page because past ecological conditions and environments, particulary for the Quartenary, are commonly inferred from these palynological studies. Global Land Environments During the Last 130,000 years . Jonathan Adams. This extraordinary site has an absolute wealth of information on Paleoecology and Paleoclimatology for the last 130,000 years of the world including North America. You'll find vegetation maps for North America for different time periods and information on how the movement of vegetation types was influenced by the glaciations of the Quarternary. The site also has a series of articles on everything from vegetation types to glaciation. The site is on the technical side, but highly recommended. Review and Atlas of Palaeovegetation . Jonathan Adams. The most interesting sections of this great site have a series of maps of world vegetation at periods of 18,000, 8,000, and 5,000 years ago. The site also has a series of articles on a variety of topics, mostly related to quarternary vegetation.

The FLMNH Paleobotanical Collection includes approximately 105,000 specimens. This is a conservative estimate that does not take into account the fact that an individual hand sample may contain more than one fossil of interest. In addition, the facility houses the John W. Hall paleobotanical collection (approximately 20,000 specimens) currently on a long-term loan from the University of Minnesota. The collection is international in scope, ranging from the Proterozoic to the Pleistocene, and including collections from 26 countries. Particular strengths of the collection are: Cretaceous of the US western interior (~17,000 specimens), Cretaceous and Eocene of southeastern North America (~31,000 specimens), Eocene and Oligocene of the Pacific northwest (~19,500 specimens), and Pennsylvanian of Indiana and Illinois (~6,000 specimens). Systematically the greatest strength of the collection is in Cretaceous-Tertiary angiosperms, which are represented by large numbers of well-preserved fruits and flowers as well as leaves and wood. A majority of publications generated by the collection have dealt with angiosperm systematics, but publications also have been generated on algae, fungi, lycopods, ferns, seed ferns, conifers, and insect mines and have been used to address questions of phylogeny, paleogeography, and paleoclimate.

FACILITIES The Shuler Museum of Paleontology maintains research and teaching collections in microfossils, fossil invertebrates, fossil plants, and recent and fossil vertebrates. Active areas of current research involve Mesozoic and Cenozoic vertebrates and plant macrofossils, and palynology. Vertebrate collections in the Shuler Museum of Paleontology have special strengths in the Mesozoic and Cenozoic of Texas, Mesozoic of Southwestern U.S., and representative and research collections from active projects outside the U.S., including Kenya, Malawi, Cameroon, Pakistan, Mexico, and Yemen. The collections and personnel from the Shuler Museum are actively used and involved in outreach programs through area public museums. One such project is the development of a traveling exhibit with the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History entitled Lone Star Dinosaurs
Facilities of the Shuler Museum of Paleontology include laboratories for fossil preparation, molding and casting, pollen extraction and anlysis, and morphometric analysis. University of Alaska Fairbanks Graduate Studies in Palynology Graduate Studies in Paleontology Graduate Studies in Palynology at UAF The UAF Graduate Program in Palynology offers students the opportunity to conduct research in Quaternary palynology or stratigraphic palynology. The MS program is designed to provide students with the field, laboratory, and analytical skills necessary for collection, processing, and interpretation of palynological data from rocks and sediments of all ages. Field work for Quaternary projects includes collection of lake cores and surface pollen samples, whereas students collecting samples from lithified sediments will hone their stratigraphic correlation skills. All students will learn standard laboratory processing techniques for modern and fossil pollen and standard light microscopy skills, as well as mastering advanced analytical tools such as the scanning electron microscope.
Graduate students are advised by a 3-member committee, chosen on the basis of the project and the expertise of the potential adivsers. UAF faculty available to serve on Palyonology thesis committees have specialties that include paleontology, Quaternary geology, clastic sedimentology, and geochronology.

    Paleontology
Paleontology is the study of life of past geological times based on the examination of fossil remains of plants and animals. Biostratigraphy is the part of paleontology that relates to the conditions and order of deposition of sedimentary rocks. Information derived from the study of the evolution of important fossil groups is used to develop and modify the standard geological time scale for intercontinental correlation. This scale is the geological clock that records when geological events occurred. The study of fossils also leads to an understanding of ancient depositional environments. Examinations of the physical and chemical changes that fossils undergo over time can provide insight into the changing physical and chemical characteristics of sedimentary environments over time. Paleontology research at GSC Calgary focuses mainly on microfossils (primarily conodonts and foraminifera) and palynomorphs (pollens and spores). We are responsible for the

The Organizing Committee warmly invites you to attend the 6th EUROPEAN PALEOBOTANICAL- PALYNOLOGICAL Conference that will be held from August 29th to September 2nd in Athens. The University of Athens, the Faculty of Geology-Department of Historical Geology-Paleontology will organize the Conference, under the auspices of the International Organization of Paleobotany, the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Aegean and the sponsorship of ELAIS and the Greek National Geographic. The Organizing Committee has received responses to the First Circular from over 300 Paleobotanists and palynologists from all over Europe and other Countries. Athens is the capital city of Greece and has a rich cultural and scientific tradition. Once the center of the world, with the most eminent philosophers, the greatest writers and the best sculptures humanity has ever known. Athens is the first largest University center in Greece.
