Laboratory for Microbiological Oceanography:
General Information
The Laboratory for Microbiological Oceanography is a research unit within the recently created School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Professor David M. Karl currently serves as unit Head and co-ordinates all activities in the Laboratory. He also holds an appointment in the Department of Oceanography where he performs his academic duties including teaching and graduate student advising and an appointment in the SOEST Division of Oceanic Biology where he currently serves in the capacity of research oceanographer. Professor Karl has recently been appointed an Affiliate Faculty member of the Bermuda Biological Station for Research, Inc. A brief summary of the relevant organizational units and a description of the research activities of the Laboratory for Microbiological Oceanography are presented below.

    NSTA Teacher Certification
    An Overview
    T he National Science Teachers Association offers certification to elementary and middle level teachers of science and to teachers of biology, broadfield science, chemistry, earth and space science, general science, physics, and physical science. To become certified, teachers must meet specific standards of education and experience based on the grade level and/or subject they teach. A teacher is eligible to apply for certification after completing three years of full-time teaching. NSTA certification seeks to improve the quality of science teaching by recognizing teachers who are well qualified. NSTA certification gives teachers an edge in seeking or keeping a teaching assignment for which they are qualified and, where possible, in ascending the salary ladder. The NSTA standards have been adopted by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education and by the Association for the Education of Teachers in Science. NSTA offers certification in the following categories:

    IV. The Development of Oceanographic Science, Technology and Education In recent years China has made further efforts to promote the investigation and exploration of marine resources and the marine environment, search actively for new exploitable resources, study new techniques and methods of marine resources exploitation and protection, train technical personnel in marine development and protection, and spread oceanographic knowledge among the general public in order to rouse the whole nation to protect the marine environment. On the basis of a multidisciplinary oceanographic research setup, which consists of 109 research institutes and 13,000-some research personnel, China has many achievements to its credit in oceanographic survey and research, studies in basic oceanographic science, development and protection of ocean resources, marine monitoring technologies and manufacturing of oceanographic technical equipment. Since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949 a large amount of work has been done in the field of oceanographic surveys and research, which started in offshore areas with surface observation of the sea and later expanded to deep-sea regions by means of aerospace remote sensing and underwater detection, as well as surface observation. As early as in the period 1958-1960 a national comprehensive survey of China's offshore waters was made; later, from 1980 to 1986, a comprehensive survey of coastal zones and shoals resources was conducted nationwide, along with the launching of a number of pilot projects on the comprehensive development and utilization of coastal zones; and from 1988 to 1995 a general investigation of the country's island resources and an experiment on their comprehensive development were carried out.

    General Information The School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) was established in 1988. It combines and integrates the Departments of Geology and Geophysics, Meteorology, Ocean and Resources Engineering, and Oceanography, as well as the Hawai‘i Institute of Geophysics and Planetology, the Hawai‘i Institute of Marine Biology, and the Hawai‘i Natural Energy Institute. The Sea Grant and Space Grant College Programs, the Hawai‘i Undersea Research Laboratory, and the Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research, all jointly supported by state and federal funds, are also part of SOEST. In 1997 the International Pacific Research Center was established in SOEST under the U.S.- Japan Common Agenda. The center is jointly supported by the state, Japanese, and federal funds. In addition, SOEST includes the Marine Option Program.
    Mission
    The mission of SOEST is to make the University of Hawai‘i a leading center in ocean and earth science and technology. Scientists of SOEST intend to understand the subtle and complex interrelations of the seas, the atmosphere, and the Earth in order to learn how to preserve the quality of our lives and to bring to Hawai‘i an enrichment of intellect and culture along with technological advances well suited to the needs of these islands. To that end, the objectives of SOEST are as follows:

List of instrument types Introduction MAMA MAMA is structured into several workpackages. The general objective of Workpackage 1 (MAMA-NOW) is the stocktaking and identification in the Mediterranean of the current regional and national capabilities in the routine monitoring, assessment and forecasting of the state of the ocean and coastal areas. This survey is being conducted as one component activity of this workpackage and is intended to collect information and to establish an inventory on operational ocean/coastal monitoring activities in the region. The information required in this survey will provide the basis for an assessment of:
    The inventory is considered to be an essential step in the identification of the existing systems that can feasibly be networked to operate in near-real-time, and constitutes the basis for the design of a cost-effective observing system in the Mediterranean.     A Brief History
    The Workshop on Partial Differential Equations: Theory, Computation and Applications is held every two years, in July, at Instituto Nacional de Matematica Pura e Aplicada (IMPA), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The first one took place in 1989, and it was focused on Fluid Dynamics. The other events took place from 1991 to 2001 (odd years); they were more general and they gave rise to six issues of Matematica Contemporanea, a journal of the Brazilian Mathematical Society that publishes refereed articles of high quality meetings in Brazil.
    Many of the activities of the last Workshops (see ) were focused on topics of current interest in Partial Differential Equations, such as theoretical aspects; existence, stability and long time behavior; numerical analysis of solution methods, as well as exploration of related theory via scientific computing; nonlinear conservation laws, with applications in fluid dynamics, elasticity, flow in porous media; mathematical modeling in geophysical fluid dynamics, with emphasis in theoretical aspects of meteorology and physical oceanography.

    I. Participation in International Programs
    As a result of its development, the NCMR participates increasingly in several International research Programs and activities. A selection of the International Programs in which we participate are outlined below. 1. European Union MAST (Marine Science and Technology Program) The objective of the research under the MAST program, is to understand the functioning of marine systems around Europe, both in-shelf and deep seas, and thus to contribute to establishing the scientific and technical basis for their exploitation, management and protection. Projects are distributed over a wide range of disciplines in marine science, in coastal zone research and in marine technology. Programs conducted within the framework of the MAST Program include: PELAGOS / CINCS MTP-I MATER MTP-II METROMED ENV (Environment and Climate Program) The European Union Web Page concerning this Program can be entered through here. ELOISE FAIR (Fisheries and Agriculture Program) The FAIR program aims to obtain a better knowledge of the deep sea ecosystems, which are now more and more intensively exploited by bottom fisheries. The program concentrates on those deep sea ecosystems which may initially provide high cpue for various target species, but their potential for a sustained exploitation is still unknown. The program covers most of the North Atlantic and Mediterranean waters; its major objectives are to review all the information on past and present deep sea fisheries (catches and dumping's), to make available the considerable scientific knowledge already collected about these areas and to improve the biological knowledge about the species caught.
