General Principles
At the beginning of the 21st century, for the first time in human history, more of the earth's population suffers from too much food, rather than from lack of food. This has resulted in an increasing number of persons who are obese. This is a problem even amongst children. Over half of persons in the U.S. are overweight enough to be defined as obese. This number increased by 50% in the last decade of the 20th century. There are a multitude of health complications from obesity. How does obesity occur? The formula is simple: Food eaten - exercise = weight gained Another way of explaining the situation: Delicious, calorie dense food + sedentary lifestyle = obesity There is ordinarily a modest amount of calories burned to maintain normal body metabolic processes. In general, for a normal healthy adult to maintain body weight with just activities of daily living, caloric intake must be limited to 10 calories (kcal) per pound (22 calories per kg). Thus, a 150 lb (68 kg) person needs about 1500 calories (kcal) per day to avoid gaining weight. Exercise can increase caloric use, and exercise has a "carryover effect" to increase metabolism and burn more calories after exercise. Of course, growing children require more calories. Exercise can burn calories (average for a standard 70 kg person) as follows: Activity (moderate) kcal/minute chewing gum walking cycling dancing ice skating swimming jogging shovelling A good aerobic exercise with cardiovascular benefit is to climb 10 flights of stairs once a day. Just brisk walking for 20 minutes a day can have major benefits.

"Controversy on how much fat we should eat and what type has been debated since back in the 1950s," began Dr. Frank Sacks, a professor of cardiovascular disease prevention at Harvard School of Public Health who also runs a clinic in hyperlipidemia at Brigham and Women's Hospital. "Not every issue has been solved and we're far from having it nailed down yet." Questions remain, he continued, concerning the ideal amount of fat in the diet to help prevent cardiovascular disease, whether low-fat or moderate-fat diets are better for healthy weight loss, and how physical activity factors in the equation. What is clear, he said, is that these questions and many others must be resolved in order to reduce the burden of such disorders as heart attack, stroke, diabetes and obesity. The Problem of Obesity
The Causes of Obesity : Contrary to popular belief, genetics are not primarily responsible for the epidemic. Unhealthy eating habits, a lack of exercise and an increase in sedentary behavior (being physically inactive) are the primary reasons for obesity. The process of gaining weight is very simple: consuming more calories than your body expends leads to a storage of the excess calories in the form of fat. The prevalence of weight gain during the last several decades has occurred because more Americans are experiencing an imbalance between energy intake and energy output. The average caloric intake has increased over the last couple of years. With the increase in time spent sitting quietly-watching television, playing video games or surfing the Internet, the situation does not look promising for the youth of the nation.

Nutrition Experts and Diet-book Authors Urge Government to Test Weight-loss Plans In the past 20 years, obesity rates have shot up in adults, teens, and children. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than half of all adults are overweight or obese, and the rates of obesity in children and teens have doubled since the late 1970s. Obesity increases the risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and other health problems. Each year obesity causes tens or even hundreds of thousands of premature deaths and costs the public tens of billions of dollars. Dr. Robert C. 77. NAAFA Policy On DIETING AND THE DIET INDUSTRY
for the safety and emotional and physical wellbeing of consumers by attempting toinfluence public policy about dieting, obesity, and diet industry regulation
    http://www.naafa.org/documents/policies/dieting.html
    DIETING AND THE DIET INDUSTRY
    HISTORY/EXISTING CONDITION:

The term "diet" within this policy refers exclusively to weight reduction diets. "Dieting" is defined as any attempt to achieve or maintain lower body weight by intentionally limiting or manipulating the amount or type of food intake. Weight reduction diets include medically supervised diets; self-administered diets; commercial diet organizations and centers; weight-loss support groups or behavior modification programs; "fad" diets; "sensible, well-balanced" diets; in-hospital fasts; very-low-calorie diets (VLCDs); prepackaged food plans; and diets supplemented by drugs or artificial food products or supplements.
"Dieting" does not refer to attempts to lower fat sugar, salt, or cholesterol intake, increase fiber intake, exercise or pursue a medically mandated nutritional regimen prescribed for specific medical conditions. Weight-loss diets have long been promoted as a permanent cure for "obesity," although they rarely produce long-lasting or permanent results. According to existing medical research, fewer than five percent of all dieters succeed in losing a significant amount of weight and maintaining that weight loss over a five-year period. Ninety percent of all dieters regain some or all of the weight originally lost and at least one-third gain more. In recent years, an increasing body of research has substantiated this diet failure rate and acknowledged genetic and physiological factors in the determination of body size.

    Obesity in dogs
Obesity is a major problem for pet dogs
    Introduction
Obesity in dogs is a serious medical problem. Fat dogs are more at risk in surgery, more prone to injury, and have more stress on their heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, and joints.
A guide to determine if Pal is malnourished
Overweight dogs have increasing amounts of fat over the ribs and minimal or absent waist and tuck-up. Obese dogs have heavy fat over the ribs, along the spine, and around the tail. Morbidly fat dogs have protruding abdomens and fat deposits throughout their bodies. Owners can examine their own dogs for a fat layer on the ribs and the visibility of a waist and tuck-up. Breed characteristics should be taken into account of course, as some breeds have more prominent ribs and tuck-ups when in optimum condition. In general, dogs with protruding bones and the appearance of muscle loss are too thin.
