The Acadians of Nova Scotia
A brief history of the Acadians of Nova Scotia Water and green hills: the region's geography Images of Nova Scotia For more information, please visit: http://www.cdene.ns.ca/ A brief history of the Acadians of Nova Scotia In 1542, Italian explorer Verazzano named part of the eastern coast of North America Arcadia , after the pastoral region of Ancient Greece immortalized in Greek poetry. That coastal region is what is now Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec and part of Maine. Over the years, the name changed to Acadia In the 17th century, there were a hundred French families in Acadia. The Acadians had a strong sense of community and gradually developed their own culture. They stayed out of disputes between the French and the British and developed friendly relations with the Aboriginal peoples, learning their hunting and fishing techniques. In the early 18th century, the British government, doubting the neutrality of the Acadians, demanded that they swear allegiance to the British Crown. The issue would cause discord for decades to come. In 1755, British Governor Charles Lawrence decided to settle the matter once and for all by deporting the Acadians from Nova Scotia and dispersing them among the 13 English colonies, from Massachusetts to Georgia. In 1764, the Acadians were granted permission to return to Nova Scotia; however, they were prohibited from settling in any one area in numbers great enough to form a self-sufficient society. The Acadians therefore spread out along the Nova Scotia coast and remain scattered across Nova Scotia to this day. The greatest concentrations of Acadians are in the following regions: Argyle, Chéticamp, Clare, Annapolis Valley, Halifax-Dartmouth, Pomquet, Richmond and Sydney.

One of the Maritime Provinces, Nova Scotia comprises a mainland peninsula and the adjacent Cape Breton Island. It is bounded on the N by the Gulf of St. Lawrence and Northumberland Strait, across which lies Prince Edward Island; on the E and S by the Atlantic Ocean; and on the W by New Brunswick, from which it is largely separated by the Bay of Fundy. The climate is moderate and the rainfall abundant. The east coast is rocky, with numerous bays and coves, and is dotted with many charming fishing villages. Off the beautiful south shore is Sable Island, called the graveyard of the Atlantic; on the west coast huge Fundy tides wash the shores. Frequently visited historical spots include the Alexander Graham Bell Museum at Baddeck, the Shrine of Evangeline at Grand Pré, and the town of Annapolis Royal, site of the first permanent Canadian settlement (1610). Cape Breton Island (est. 1936) and Kejimkujik (est. 1968) national parks are in Nova Scotia. Sportsmen are attracted by abundant game and all types of fishing and by some of the best sailing on the continent. The capital is the port of Halifax; other important cities are Dartmouth, Sydney, Glace Bay, Truro, and New Glasgow.

Nova Scotia's 580 kilometer peninsula is surrounded by four bodies of water - the Atlantic Ocean, the Bay of Fundy, the Northumberland Strait and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. With an area of 55,491 sq km, Nova Scotia is bigger than Denmark but smaller than Scotland. Nova Scotia consists of headlands, harbours and ocean beaches. Its shoreline covers 10,424 kilometers. Climate
Nova Scotian climate is so harsh in wintertime that the seaboard Nova Scotian colonists of the eighteenth century earned the nickname 'Bluenoses' for their ability to stand the cold. The summers are warm and autumns are long and mild. It has a mild overall climate due to ocean currents. Culture
The character of Nova Scotia has been conditioned by the North Atlantic weather. The farmers of the Annapolis Valley and their Acadian neighbours were quite distinct from the mariners of the Atlantic coast, and different again were the mixed bag of emigrants who came to work the coal mines and steel mills of central Nova Scotia and Cape Breton Island from the 1880s - differences that remain noticeable today. Over 80 percent of Nova Scotia's population trace their ancestry to the British Isles. Those with French origin rank second (18 percent). More recent immigrants to Nova Scotia have included Chinese, African, Asian and eastern European groups. 22,000 residents of Nova Scotia have Aboriginal origins and are primarily of the Mi'Kmaq Nation. The largest population groups are found in the Halifax area.
