IMMIGRATION AND THE INTERNET The Selective Service, the federal agency in charge of administering the military draft registration system in this country, has established a web site ( http://www.sss.gov ) that allows individuals to register for the draft online. Male permanent residents as well as citizens born after 1959 may be required to register for US military service. Failure to register can result in criminal penalties even though there is no draft. Unfortunately, many permanent residents are unaware of this legal obligation or mistakenly believe it does not apply to them. The American Immigration Law Foundation has created a new public service web site ( http://www.notable-immigrants.org ) to honor immigrants who have benefited America. The site includes photos and biographies of immigrants who have made a significant contribution to America, the Congressman who submitted them for consideration and the individual attorneys who have interviewed the immigrants.

Doug Caulkins, Professor of Anthropology
I was born and raised in the Black Hills of South Dakota, geologically an "island in the prairie." My anthropological research on the cultures of Norway, Wales, Scotland and England eventually led me to a study of immigrants who settled in Iowa. I wrote the chapter on Welsh-Americans in American Immigrant Cultures: Builders of a Nation (David Levinson and Melvin Ember, editors; Macmillan, 1997, pp.935-941). I am also writing a series of brief biographies of successful Welsh-Americans for an encyclopedia of notable immigrants. In addition to studying those who settled on the prairies, I am active in environmental conservation in central Iowa, where I own a farm. I helped establish an organization of Grinnell residents dedicated to the conservation and restoration of a large tract of Iowa woodland, grassland, and streams. ROBERT W. BARNES
Robert Barnes, a long recognized name in Maryland genealogy, comes to us from his native Baltimore County. Bob began researching Maryland families many years ago, and soon thereafter created a vast number of books as aides to those in their research of Maryland families. To date he has published numerous titles including: Maryland Marriages 1634-1777, Maryland Marriages 1778-1800, and Maryland Marriages, 1801 to 1820, Baltimore County Families, 1659-1759 and several books of newspaper abstracts. His latest work, British Roots of Maryland Families , contains information on nearly 500 individuals and families whose descendants came to Maryland. He identifies 493 families of British origin. He is currently finishing Volume 2 of British Roots of Maryland Families. After retiring as Head of the Social Studies Department of Thurgood Marshall Middle School in Baltimore City, he assumed positions as writer for Family Line Publications and then as Reference Archivist for the Maryland State Archives, and greatly expanded his work as a professional genealogist. Bob has provided service and leadership to the Maryland Genealogical Society (President in 1964) and Baltimore County Genealogical Society (serving as President, Editor and in other roles).

Late in 1858 reports of the discovery of gold in Pike's Peak country so aroused his adventurous spirit that he conceived a plan for a journey to the Rocky Mountains in the role of a correspondent, made a connection with the Cincinnati Commercial , and in the spring of 1859 set out acros the Plains. His sojourn of some months in the mining camps not only enabled him to make the aquaintance of several noteworthy men, including Horace Greeley, but provided him with the materials for a guidebook for immigrants which he published in 1860 under the title
