Spanish is the language of Nicaragua, but English and a number of Indian languages are spoken on the Caribbean coast. The main religion is Catholicism, although there are a number of Protestant sects such as the Pentecostals and the Baptists. The Moravian church, introduced by British missionaries, is important on the Caribbean coast. A typical meal in Nicaragua consists of eggs or meat, beans and rice, salad (cabbage and tomatoes), tortillas and fruit in season. Most common of all Nicaraguan foods is gallo pinto , a blend of rice and beans, with cooking water from the beans added to color the rice. Other traditional dishes include bajo , a mix of beef, green and ripe plantains and yucca (cassava), and , yucca served with fried pork skins and coleslaw. Street vendors sell interesting drinks such as tiste , made from cacao and corn, and posol con leche , a corn-and-milk drink. Nicaragua boasts the best beer and rum in Central America.

Nicaragua is one such place with a natural beauty that is thankfully still notcompromised and a warm and vibrant culture that is totally unpretentious.

CULTURE
Earthquakes and war have obliterated much tangible evidence of Nicaragua's cultural heritage, especially its colonial architecture - although León retains many fine old buildings. Poetry is one of Nicaragua's most beloved arts and no other Central American country can match its literary output. Rubén Darío (1867-1916) is known as the 'Prince of Spanish-American literature' and recent work by Nicaraguan poets, fiction writers and essayists can be found in most bookshops. Bluefields, the largely English-speaking town on the Caribbean coast, is a center for reggae music. The Archipiélago de Solentiname in Lago de Nicaragua is famous as a haven for artists, poets and craftspeople. Sandinista street art in the form of modernist murals is especially prominent in the university town of León. Spanish is the language of Nicaragua but English and a number of Indian languages are spoken on the Caribbean coast. The main religion is Catholicism, although there are a number of Protestant sects such as the Pentecostals and the Baptists. The Moravian church, introduced by British missionaries, is important on the Caribbean coast. Nicaragua is also home to red-roofed Spanish colonial cities with magnificent churches and cathedrals, little white villages set in coffee and pineapple farms, island bound art colonies, a wide open countryside where horses and oxcarts are still the mode of transport and some of Latin America's most beautiful ceramic, leather and wood crafts and the world's best hammocks and most delicious and varied rum.

"This little volume of encounters with Nicaraguan writers by Steven White (a young American translator and poet) gets beyond daily headlines about ideological feuds and contra raids and helps bring alive for U. S. readers the cultural ferment in that embattled nation. White's translations of these spirited conversations and the interspersed samples of poetry are idiomatic, lively and smooth."
Gene H. Bell-Villada, In These Times "El libro de White demuestra que la tierra de Darío y Sandino es el país que tiene más y mejores poetas en toda la región centroamericana."
Wellington Rojas, El Diario Austral "The collage on the cover of this book captures in a glance what the anthology accomplishes in its detailed and multifaceted pages: a snapshot of the Nicaraguan intelligentsia at one moment in its turbulent yet vital history."

    Nicaragua - Culture Overview
In Nicaragua the majority of the people, including mestizos, whites, and mulattos, share a Hispanic culture. Only a small percentage of the population living on the Caribbean coast is non-Spanish speaking and non-Catholic. Nicaraguans are divided not by ethnicity but rather by the lingering effects of the Sandinista Revolution of 1979 and the subsequent civil war of the 1980s. Peace has been restored, but people continue to contest questions of national identity. So, for example, everyone agrees that El Gueguense, a piece of popular theater performed and passed on orally since the colonial period, portrays many important aspects of the Nicaraguan character. There is disagreement, however, over whether the roots of these characteristics are popular and revolutionary, or rather come from a more elite tradition.
The majority of Nicaraguans are Catholic and most communities observe a religious calendar that culminates in festive parades honoring the local patron saint. As in much of Central America, however, the coastal culture of the Caribbean lowlands is distinct from that of the more westerly, majority groups. In Nicaragua, the coast is inhabited by descendants of Africans and indigenous peoples (Miskito, Rama, and Sumu) who in the past preferred to deal with the British rather than the Spanish. The indigenous groups, dominated by the Miskito, are centered closer to the northern border with Honduras. Blacks are concentrated in the southeastern town of Bluefields, where their cultural traditions are manifest in such celebrations as Mayo Ya, which combines English May Pole traditions with Caribbean folklore and African music and dance. Bluefields is also home to a lively reggae community.

Brief information of geography, economy, government, and culture.
    http://www.peacecorps.gov/countries/nicaragua/culture.cfm
April 10, 2003 4:36 AM Geography and Climate
Nicaragua, with a land area of 57,000 square miles (about the size of Iowa), is the largest of the Central American Republics. It is bordered on the north by Honduras, on the south by Costa Rica, on the west by the Pacific Ocean and on the east by the Caribbean Sea. It is the least densely populated of the Central American nations, with an average annual population growth rate of 2.9 percent.
Managua, on the southern shore of Lake Managua, contains about a third of the nation's population. Most of the population lives near the Pacific, but the population center is moving towards the Caribbean. Approximately 58 percent of the population live in the Pacific zone, about 35 percent in the Central Highlands and the remaining seven percent in the Caribbean lowlands. Although Nicaragua still has a slightly higher number of people living in rural areas than urban areas, the trend has been towards increased urbanization.
The climate varies with the geographic regions. Generally, Nicaragua is hot and tropical, with cool comfortable nights and a very short dry season.

Country Info Nicaragua Introduction Nicaragua General Data Nicaragua Maps Nicaragua Culture ... Nicaragua Time and Date Nicaragua Culture Back to Top Nicaragua has rich cultural traditions that reflect long-standing, sharp class and ethnic cleavages. The elite, “professional” tradition was exemplified in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by the literary works of Rubén Darío, known as the “prince of Spanish-American poetry.” The folk traditions were expressed in beautiful arts and crafts, popular religious ceremonies, and country music (corridos). Nicaraguan culture is largely a mixture of Hispanic and Native American elements, with regional variations. Many folk dances are drawn from both traditions. The most notable are those of Masaya, including Las Inditas and Toro Guaco, a dance in which figures representing Spanish conquistadors and Native Americans mock each other’s cultures. There are many local festivals, including the celebration of the feast of Santo Domingo in Managua during the first ten days of August. This combines popular celebrations with a religious pilgrimage. Music is a vital part of such events, which include the playing of marimbas, guitars, traditional flutes (zuls), and maracas. Along the Caribbean coast there is greater African influence on music and dance. The drama and emotions of the insurrectionary and revolutionary periods from the late 1970s through 1990 produced a flourishing of artistic expression. Masterly work was exemplified in the paintings of Alejandro Canales, Armando Morales, and Leoncio Sáenz; the poetry of Gioconda Belli and Ernesto Cardenal; the novels of Vice President Sergio Ramírez; the testimonial narratives of Omar Cabezas; the “New Song Movement” led by Carlos Mejía Godoy; and the theatre of Alan Bolt.

Nicaragua Nicaragua is best known not for its landscape or cultural treasures, but for the 1979 Sandinista revolution and subsequent Contra war, in which the people rose up in hope only to be derailed by US-orchestrated interference. The Sandinistas are no longer in power and the prevailing economic ideology, dictated by the likes of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), involves widespread privatization and deregulation. This high-speed 'structural adjustment' has reduced inflation, provided ready cash for the business elite and left much of the rest of the country unemployed or in a state of sticker shock. The good news is that throughout this period human rights have largely been respected and the country's battles are now confined to the political arena. Nicaragua is a fascinating destination for those travelers who shun seeing 'sights,' have an awareness of history and enjoy getting to know a country on a grassroots level.
    Warning
Since the end of the civil war, armed criminal groups have operated out of the northern sectors of the country, especially along the Honduran border. Travelers visiting the border region should exercise a special measure of caution.

Country Info Nicaragua Introduction Nicaragua General Data Nicaragua Maps Nicaragua Culture ... Nicaragua Time and Date Nicaragua History Back to Top At the end of the 15th century, western Nicaragua was inhabited by several indigenous peoples related by culture and language to those of central Mexico. They were primarily farmers who lived in towns, organized into small kingdoms. In eastern Nicaragua, a much smaller group of Native Americans that had migrated from Colombia and Panama lived a less sedentary life based on hunting and gathering. The Spanish conquistador Gil González Dávila made the first attempt to conquer what is now Nicaragua in 1522. Although he claimed to have converted some 30,000 American Indians, carried off 90,000 pesos of gold, and discovered a possible transisthmian water link, González was eventually run out of Nicaragua by angry native inhabitants. Some of the latter were commanded by Nicarao, from whom the country's name derives. It was not until 1524, under Francisco Hernández de Córdoba, that permanent colonization began. Italian Spanish explorer Christopher Columbus sighted Nicaragua in 1502, but the first Spanish expedition, headed by Gil González Dávila, did not arrive until 20 years later. The conquest he began was completed from 1523 to 1524 by Francisco Fernández de Córdoba, who founded the cities of Granada and León. The conquest proved disastrous for the native population. Many died from diseases carried to the region by Europeans, such as measles, to which they had no immunity. Many of the survivors were enslaved; an estimated 200,000 were shipped off to labor in the mines of Peru and other parts of Spain’s empire. Of an estimated 1 million indigenous people before the conquest, a 1548 census found only 11,137 Native Americans left in western Nicaragua.
