The New Zealand Government and the unemployed
For some sixty years prior to the 1984 general election, New Zealand had been a somewhat socialist, largely egalitarian society of approximately two and three quarter million people that had had strong ties to Britain as the country that had colonised it.
Even today, (1998) New Zealand is the only Anglo-Saxon Commonwealth country to hold as its highest court the British Privy Council.
Upon being elected in 1984 the New Zealand Labour Party apparently abandoned its collectivist roots and introduced polices of the so called "New Right". It is generally considered that the Party had not sought a mandate for the policies they were to introduce, but it claimed that the policies were necessary because it had inherited an overseas debt that threatened the country with bankruptcy.
(It is of interest to note that today the country's overseas debt is greater than it was in 1984 yet the move to the right continues and the media are strangely silent on the matter.)
The period of power of the New Right Labour Party included swingeing changes to the nature of New Zealand society including large scale sell-offs of government owned infrastructure such as the railways and telecommunication organisations.

Press Release:
Auckland, 27th July 1998
New Zealand Government and Australia New Zealand Food Authority (ANZFA) acted undemocratically in bypassing health concerns of New Zealanders about genetically engineered foods
An inquiry report released by the Australia New Zealand Food Authority shows that the submissions from 10,000 New Zealanders about potential health hazards of genetically engineered foods were ignored by the Authority. ANZFA bypassed detailed consideration of New Zealanders concerns by simply saying that the New Zealand submissions were "in response to a public campaign". Instead the Authority opted to take account of the views of so-called stake holders including Australian Food Council, Hort Research, CSIRO, NZ Grocery Marketer's Association and the US Food and Drug Administration. As a result ANZFA's original plan to require labelling of most genetically altered foods was scrapped in favour of a policy which will allow almost all genetically engineered foods to escape labelling. New Zealand Deputy Health Minister, Tuarike Delamere, has agreed with ANZFA proposals. Although there might be risks to public health from GE foods, he says, it would be too hard and too costly for New Zealand to identify genetically altered ingredients in food. He is also afraid that New Zealand will be in breach of trade agreements if it requires labelling of GE foods. Europe is taking a different tack. EU MPs find it harder to ignore the concerns of constituents-the new politics in Europe requires that Government listen to the people. So the EU has required mandatory labelling of GE foods. In contrast, New Zealand MPs can bypass public concerns and poison their own constituents in order to defend free trade.

Prescriber Update No.19:22-23 Medsafe Editorial Team Cisapride (Prepulsid™) causes QT-prolongation which may worsen to life-threatening torsade de pointes. The WHO database holds 159 reports of these events. Many patients were taking interacting medicines, most commonly erythromycin, fluconazole, clarithromycin and amiodarone. Excessive dose and electrolyte disturbances also featured in the cases.
Cisapride should be avoided with substances which inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4, with other agents which prolong the QT-interval, in patients with predisposing factors for arrhythmia or pre-existing QT-prolongation and in patients with hepatic failure. Cisapride can cause QT-prolongation
An article published in Prescriber Update in February 1997 advised of the possibility of QT-prolongation with cisapride (Prepulsid™). At that time it was not possible to be confident of the causal association. Since that time further data, including clinical studies, have become available confirming the association. reports of QT-prolongation and/or torsade de pointes in WHO database
At the end of July 1999, the WHO database held 159 reports of QT-prolongation and/or torsade de pointes with cisapride. 82 of these cases involved torsade de pointes. Death was the outcome in 11 cases. In around half of the cases the patient was taking an interacting medicine, most commonly erythromycin, fluconazole, clarithromycin and amiodarone. Excessive dose and electrolyte disturbances were factors in a small number of cases.

Library and Information Association New Zealand Aotearoa (LIANZA) Submission on the E-Govt Portal Strategy Introduction LIANZA as an association has a long and proud history of representing library and information professionals in New Zealand since 1910. LIANZA's institutional membership base of 500 members is diverse - ranging from small rural libraries to special and government libraries, school and museum libraries and information centres. LIANZA also has a strong and active personal membership of just under 1000. LIANZA is currently advocating for a "National Information Strategy" for New Zealand. With the increasing issue of the digital divide, LIANZA believes that - more than ever before - there is a need to recognise the significant roles libraries play in supporting an information literate and democratically active knowledge-led society. That is why LIANZA feels that it is important to respond to the "New Zealand Government Portal Strategy" as it could help to close the digital divide if it is implemented carefully.
