Visual Arts Search Search the Archives Back to Home Entertainment Thursday, Apr 10, 2003 Dining Posted on Fri, Jan. 31, 2003 Blue Goose flies the coop to Grapevine By Bud Kennedy Star-Telegram Staff Writer The Blue Goose Cantina is a Greenville Avenue landmark for Dallas margarita drinkers. So can a Blue Goose migrate from Greenville to Grapevine? Yes. Sort of. The new Goose has flown the coop from the rest. Instead of a Tex-Mex cantina, it's now a grilled- and fried-seafood restaurant, Blue Goose Fish Co. The operative Blue Goose margarita menu remains the same: seven styles, including strawberry, mango and prickly pear. Otherwise, the new Goose is a different bird. The highlights include oysters and grilled salmon, scallops and fresh fish, along with fried seafood and Cajun po-boys. If you just can't live without those Blue Goose chicken enchiladas, they're on a short menu of Tex-Mex dishes along with fajitas.

No. 87 - October 28, 2002 - East Coast Greenway Celebration
THE GARDEN SETTLEMENT IN CONTEXT Both Attorney General Spitzer (AG) and the Mayor share credit for the recent settlement that will preserve up to 200 more community gardens in NYC. The AG clearly understood and appreciated the value of the gardens and did not buckle under pressure from some "important" politically connected interest$. Mayor Bloomberg's role was more nuanced. His goal was to lift the AG's embargo against garden destruction, for fear of losing federal aid for housing construction. He was an adversary on this issue, but unlike his predecessor a fair one, who worked for compromise, recognizing that community gardeners had a legitimate interest in the outcome. The settlement will not end the long struggle for community garden legitimacy in NYC. Two hundred gardens are still threatened. The Parks Department parameters for acquisition of gardens will be selective and the continued interest in acquiring land and organization building by the city's land trusts is not assured. Many City Council members seem to believe that after the settlement, they have no role to play in the continuing struggle. There are yet no plans to introduce legislation to strengthen the gardener's hands in the coming negotiations or provide a mechanism for the creation of new community gardens. (More on community gardening below.)ÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊ

Summary: Registration of new materials by the EPA, even those designated as "low risk", does not guarantee that NY growers will have immediate access to them. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation conducts its own in-depth reviews before registering new pesticides for use in NY, and may or may not register new materials for portions of or for the entire state.

  • Basic Commodity Information State Rank: % U.S. Production: Acres Planted: Acres Harvested: Cash Value: Yearly Production Costs: $2000 - $8000, depending on method of production (estimated). Production Regions: Tomatoes are produced in all the major vegetable growing areas in NY. Leading counties include Erie, Monroe, Niagara, Onondaga, Suffolk, Ulster, Wayne, Orange, Albany, and Dutchess Counties. Greenhouse tomatoes are increasing in importance, with the greatest production in Niagara and Monroe Counties. Cultural Practices: Greenhouse tomatoes are grown in glass- or plastic-covered houses. Larger operations use hydroponic systems, while medium to small scale operations either grow plants in soil or in bags of soil-free media. Greenhouse tomato varieties are indeterminate, and plants are pruned and tied to trellis systems. Multiple harvests are done by hand, and harvesting typically lasts from April to August.
