My work with public schools over the past twelve years has been focused in the areas of (1) innovative teaching practices, specifically in the areas of problem-based learning; (2) curriculum development as defined in the areas of integrated learning and multidisciplinary curricula; (3) alternative assessment models, including holistic grading and reporting schemes; and (4) the evolving roles of teachers as reflective practitioners, action researchers, student and peer coaches, curriculum builders, collaborative problem solvers and decision makers, and school leaders contributing to policy making and school governance. Most recently, this work has advanced into formal and informal partnerships with schools in New Hampshire and Maine and some long-term collaborative projects with state departments and schoolconsortia . Testimony to the NH House Finance Committee on HB1180
by President Joan R. Leitzel
University of New Hampshire
February 8, 2000
I appreciate this opportunity to add to Trustee Schotanus' testimony and give further reasons why the University of New Hampshire must oppose HB1180.
The Federal Communications Commission created public broadcasting on the premise that stations would be licensed to non-profit educational organizations such as universities and colleges. When Jere Chase in 1953 envisioned public television, he saw it as a way for the University of New Hampshire to expand its public service. In New Hampshire, NHPTV and UNH share a common responsibility for education of New Hampshire citizens. Because the University is a land-grant institution, its outreach organizations-NHPTV, Cooperative Extension, Division of Continuing Education-are critical parts of its educational mission.
New Hampshire Public Television is now using the statewide computing network that is anchored at UNH to deliver education to New Hampshire schools. NHPTV is, also, delivering general education courses to the community/technical colleges of our state, and we expect that credit from these courses will be transferable to USNH institutions. The capabilities of digital television and the convergence of television and the Internet open many new opportunities for the UNH/NHPTV partnership in the areas of teacher education, business training activities, and collaboration among higher education institutions in the State.

91. Secondary And Other Schools - Consulate General Of Japan In Boston

http://www.boston.us.emb-japan.go.jp/secondary.htm
Secondary and Other Schools
Japanese language and culture studies are offered at secondary and other schools in all six of the New England states. Among them, in alphabetical order by state are:
Connecticut
Among the private schools in Connecticut to include Japanese in their curriculum are the Taft School in Watertown and the Kent School in Kent. Both are four-year high schools that offer four years of Japanese language instruction. Taft also has as an independent project for those students who have completed this course of study and a one-semester elective course in Japanese history, mainly for seniors.
Maine
K ennebunk High School offers an elective first-year Japanese language course, which meets once a day.
Massachusetts
A few public high schools in Massachusetts offer Japanese. Among them are the Boston Latin Academy with three years and the Muriel Snowden International School , also in Boston, with four years. As for private high schools, Thayer Academy in Braintree is an independent day school that has an agreement with the Hokkaido Board of Education. Every 18 months, Hokkaido sends a teacher of English from one of their schools; Thayer supplies this individual with room and board in return for teaching Japanese language and a survey of Japanese culture.
New Hampshire
Exeter Area High School, a public school in Exeter offers beginning, intermediate, and advanced Japanese language as well as an Asian social studies course. In addition to speaking skills, the first year language program covers hiragana and katakana; at the intermediate level, students learn about 200 kanji; in the advanced class, another 200 are covered. The school also has an extracurricular Japanese club that meets for monthly cultural activities and a Japanese animation club that meets weekly. Exeter's Japanese language instructor, Yuki Minami, sponsors a chapter of the Japanese National Honors Society at the school. In addition, there is a exchange program with an Okinawan high school; in 1998, 10 Okinawan students visited Exeter for three weeks in March and 13 Exeter students spent the summer in Okinawa
