State funds appropriated to the NAC reach every corner of Nebraska: In Fiscal Year 2001
  • The Nebraska Arts Council awarded $1,554,138 in grants to 93 communities in 79 counties. The $803,075 from the state general fund used for grants leveraged an additional $751,063 in federal and private funds that are channeled through direct grants to Nebraska schools and communities, thus almost doubling the benefit to Nebraska communities. Over 2 million people attended events using Nebraska Arts Council grants, including 879,682 children and youth. The Nebraska Arts Council’s nationally recognized Artist in the Schools/Communities program funded 1,690 days of arts activities in K-12 schools for 86,204 students. Over one-third of Artist in the Schools residencies take place in rural Nebraska schools. In addition, 40% of these grants were awarded to communities outside of Lincoln and Omaha.
  • We’re not only working harder, we’re working smarter:
  • We understand that government is in a funding crisis, and we’re doing our part. The Nebraska Arts Council staff has decreased almost 25% from 13 to 10. By cross-training, job sharing, maximizing the use of technology and partnering with other agencies and organizations for delivery of services, we’re more efficient and manage resources more effectively.

ALICAP - Insure for less
NASB expands school districts' ability
to make the most out of their insurance dollars
The Nebraska Association of School Boards' All Lines Interlocal Cooperative Aggregate Pool (ALICAP) has returned millions of dollars in insurance dividends (both from workers' compensation and property/casualty insurance) to its members over the past three years. And with the standard commercial industry becoming more reluctant to insure schools, ALICAP may provide an avenue to get quality coverage for your district at a price that is as low as any you will find.
All Your Insurance Needs
ALICAP has established a five-year history of offering school districts insurance coverage for property, inland marine, general liability, automobile, crime, employee dishonesty, and school board liability, in addition to the tried-and-true workers' compensation coverage.
Pooling Concept Works for You
ALICAP is an alternative which allows you to finance your district's insurance costs through a pooling concept, instead of through a standard insurance company. The introduction of ALICAP allows Nebraska schools to pool their insurance contributions to fund losses, negotiate broader coverages, manage expenses, and realize the investment return similar to that of the workers' compensation pool. In essence, ALICAP is an opportunity for Nebraska school districts to own and operate their own insurance cooperative by buying larger retentions and purchasing a guaranteed cost insurance premium. ALICAP is governed by the NASB Board of Directors and managed by a Board of Trustees (comprised of school board members, superintendents and business officials). The Trustees' decisions are based on an approved set of bylaws and formation agreement which the NASB Workers' Compensation Pool has operated under since its inception in 1990.

A general admission ticket will allow for admittance into the game, but will not necessarily guarantee a spot on the hill located at the north end of Memorial Stadium. "This is the second sellout in the last four home games," said Marty Finn, Director of Ticket Operations. "It is the earliest a game has been sold out in over 15 years." Remaining general admission tickets will go on sale at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday morning at the MU ticket office located at the Hearnes Center.

Taxes and Spending in Nebraska Users and Uses of Major State and Local Taxes DESCRIPTION OF THE FUNCTIONAL ALLOCATION
METHOD AND ASSUMPTIONS
For purposes of showing the reader how tax dollars are used, certain decisions were made about how state and local agencies and governments should be classified by function. Other researchers might disagree with the decisions made. The functions chosen for allocating tax dollars are based upon functions the U.S. Census Bureau uses for their survey of governments. Using these categories allows state to state comparisons of spending priorities. These comparisons are also linked to this section of the presentation. Education includes the tax dollars spent by local school districts, educational service units (ESUs) and community college areas, and direct appropriations by the state to the state Department of Education, Commission on Educational Lands and Funds, as well as to the University of Nebraska system and state colleges. Only tax dollars are included in the education total. University tuition, activities fees, concessions and dorm rentals are excluded from the analysis. State aid to local governments like schools and community colleges are counted as local spending, not state spending.

Radon in Schools
Every school should take this simple test.
Chances are you've already heard of radon a radioactive gas which can cause lung cancer. But what you might not have heard is that high levels of radon have been found in a number of schools across the country. Scientists believe that children may be especially vulnerable to the effects of radon. Which is why it is important that both students and parents be aware that a potential problem could exist in their school. The only way to determine if a problem exists, is to test. Taking a radon test is something you may want to discuss with your school officials. Because as real as the threat of radon is, the good news is that the danger can be eliminated, simply and economically . Radon could be a serious threat in your school.
The EPA ranks indoor radon among the most serious environmental problems facing us today. It is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. Radon is a naturally occurring gas that seeps into buildings from surrounding soil. In some cases, well water may be a source of radon. You can't see, taste or smell radon. In fact, the only way to discover if high levels of radon are present is through testing.
