Dream Lucidity and Near-Death Experience: A Personal Report JOHN WREN-LEWIS Clovelly, New South Wales, Australia Attempts to investigate correlations between the incidence of lucid dreaming and near-death experiences (NDEs) have so far been inconclusive ( Lucidity Letter , Vol. 1, Nos. 2 and 3, 1982). The following are some observations following my own NDE in November, 1983, which suggests a new approach. My NDE itself, which I have described elsewhere (Wren-Lewis, 1985), lacked almost all the dramatic features emphasized in the now voluminous literature on the subject (Lundahl, 1982). I had no "out-of-body" vision of myself in the hospital bed, no review of my life, no experience of hurtling through a tunnel towards a heavenly landscape and no encounter with supernatural figures urging me to return to bodily existence. I simply dissolved into an apparently spaceless and timeless void which was total "no-thing-ness" yet at the same time the most intense, blissful aliveness I have ever known. I still slip back into that old clouded state frequently, but this is not a process of "coming down." What happens is something I would have found unbelievable had I heard of it second-hand—namely, I again and again simply forget about the pearl of great price. I drift off into all kinds of preoccupations, mostly trivial, and become my old self, cut off from the Void-Background. Then, after a while, there begins to dawn on me a sense of something missing, at which point I recall the Void and usu-ally click back into the new consciousness almost immediately, with no effort at all.

Near-death experiences of Jews
The marriage of love for Yahweh
The ancient Hebrews imagined the universe as a three-tiered cosmos of heaven, Earth , and underworld. Heaven was reserved for God and the angels; living human beings occupied the middle world; and the spirits of the dead resided beneath the Earth in "She'ol." The only stories in Hebrew scriptures, besides Daniel, that refer to afterlife notions are the story of Elijah's bodily ascent to heaven . Malachi describes the reincarnation of Elijah as one of the signs of the Messiah's arrival. Indeed, it is reasonably certain that reincarnation was not an alien concept to the Hebrews. An orthodox sect of Judaism, called Hasidic Judaism , professes a belief in reincarnation. Also, ancient Jewish mysticism taught the reality of reincarnation in the Kabbalah In contemporary Judaism, the orthodox embraced the doctrine of resurrection, while the non-orthodox often accepted the notion of an immortal soul. Many secular and Reform Jews view themselves as part of the tradition of Judaism, without adhering to any sort of afterlife belief.

    THE CHALLENGE OF NEAR-DEATH EXPERIENCES

    Gracia Fay Ellwood
Lantern Books, New York, NY; 2001 P. M. H. Atwater, Lh.D. P. O. Box 7691 Charlottesville, VA 22906-7691 It is exciting for a researcher such as myself to see a true scholar come forward with the type of interpretative material that begins to build a context for understanding near-death experiences. And especially Gracia Fay, as her background in studies of things paranormal, religious, and spiritual is quite impressive. She makes a case that shamanism and mysticism form important backdrops to the study of near-death episodes. The making of a good shaman (wise one) is almost identical to what happens to typical near-death experiencers; the transmutation of spiritual death into transformed life echoes equally across the traditions of mysticism and the more modern stories of the near-death experience. Uttermost Deep brings us full circle until we are face-to-face with the issue of survival, and the likely possibility that both heaven and hell are real. Gracia Fay gives full weight to hellish near-death experiences while offering the first and final word to joy. No one else has attempted such an in-depth examination of the full spectrum of scenarios reported by near-death experiencers. I, for one, am most grateful to Gracia Fay Ellwood for this invaluable contribution to the field.

the experience to an investigation of the phenomenon, a switch in focus that will enable us to address aftereffects as well as episodes. The proverbial "rest of the story" is as critical for children as for adults, with the same abundance of positives and negatives. The following is a case in point: I was very small when I had my near-death experience. When I could run and play like the other kids again, I'd go from room to room. I'd look under the beds, in the closets, behind the doors and furniture from the top of the house to the bottom other people's houses, too. I'd look and look, but I never found them. They loved me. I know they did. They were warm and wonderful and bright with light. They came to me when I died and they left when I breathed again. I looked for years and years. Sometimes I'd curl up underneath my bed and cry. Why couldn't I find them? Where did they go? Why did they leave me in a place where no on cared and no one loved me? Was I that bad that they couldn't return? Lynn described in detail what it was like to be resuscitated. Among other things, she heard a man say, "Hit her again," as a jolt of current rocked here body. The jolt was so painful she tried to scream, but couldn't. Blackness came. Hours later she awoke hooked up to a myriad of tubes, unable to speak but fascinated by shadows moving among the medical staff. She came to realize these shadows were people who had died there. It didn't take long before she could watch "death" take place, could see the soul as it exited the body. Hospitalized for a month, she was released earlier than planned, because she talked so much to people who had died and to the misplaced souls, that her doctor was convinced she would go crazy if she stayed any longer.

    Strange Encounters:
Near-Death Experiences and Birth Memories By John A. Speyrer
O n one day in the summer of 1994, my mailbox contained notices of two interesting upcoming conferences. One will be better known to readers of this newsletter than the other. That notice concerned the International Primal Association's convention which began at the end of August of that year. The second conference was to be held in Seattle during the month of June and was sponsored by the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal (CSICOP), who are publishers of the Skeptical Inquirer magazine. The conference theme was "The Psychology of Belief.'' This was an apt theme since discussions were planned on various topics including, Alien Abductions, The Reliability of Memory, Conspiracy Theories and A History of UFOs. If the past conferences are any guide, the convention participants will spend their time critically and skeptically analyzing these subjects. It would have been more rewarding if the committee, in studying how belief systems are formed and how memory cannot be relied upon, would also have examined what possible commonalties exist between the UFO abduction experience and another experience which all of us have undergone at our beginnings Astronomer Carl Sagan gave the keynote address at the CSICOP conference last year. To avoid possible embarrassment, I am sure that no mention was made that Sagan had earlier proposed a theory to explain another bugaboo of the committee, the near-death experience. Dr. Sagan presented his theory in a book on neurology which he entitled

Dear Leroy Kattein, Thank you for creating this wonderful website. Last night, at around three or four o'clock in the morning, I was at my wit's end. I had been awake all night with my panic, and on top of that, some sort of "tummy bug," making me feel really ill. I am a teen-age girl whose Dad died a few years ago, and the sadness of my bereavement has caused me to suffer from depression. Last night, I felt life was hopeless. I was considering suicide. In desperation, I searched the internet for answers, or anything that could relieve my anxiety, but all I found was sites that made me feel even worse, "never-mind-it's-not-your-fault" bereavement sites that say they are for teenagers, but treat their visitors like small children and holier-than-thou, Bible bashing Christian sites. Then I found your site. Your words made me feel special and loved again, through your simple, straightforward explanations (no mysterious mysticism here) and sheer, solid scientific evidence. It gave me hope for my soul, for my future. I have never had any particular religious beliefs, but your website has shown me our true nature as Children Of God. I felt so comforted that I actually cried. I downloaded your Affirmations, and I decided to try your method to clear up the last dregs of my depression. Now, I'm sitting in my room, playing on my computer, feeling normal again. Thank you for saving my life

    Introduction
The various elements of the experience can be replicated by electrical stimulation studies of the temporal lobe or by hallucinogenic drugs. It is possible that hallucinogenic neurotransmitters play a role in the NDE. Wish fulfillment, death denial, dissociative psychologic trauma, and other psychologic defense mechanisms have been advanced to explain the experiences. Regardless of cause, the experiences are apparently transformative, resulting in decreased death anxiety, heightened spiritual perceptions and awareness, increased subjectively perceived psychic abilities, and decreased symptoms of depression and anxiety. Adults who had NDEs as children describe themselves as living mentally and physically healthy lives, even donating more money to charity than control populations. For the past 100 years, there has been intense interest in the scientific community and by the general public in scientific verification and validation of spiritual experiences.
