Landlocked between Siberia and northern China, this rugged nation remains largely isolated from global development efforts. Its essentially nomadic population continues to practice pastoralism, living in traditional ger, or felt tents, and moving constantly over an area twice the size of Texas. The Mongolian way of life is nomadic and intimately connected with the ways of animals. Despite urbanisation, the traditions of the steppes live on. Even in the cities, most Mongolians continue to live in a ger , a large, white felt tent that can be moved easily and has a universal layout: the door always faces south; towards the back and a little to the west is the place of honour set aside for guests; the back of the ger, the khoimor , is the place for elders and most treasured possessions; and on the back wall is the family altar, with Buddhist images, family photos and suitcases. Get a local to explain the dozens of traditional, religious and superstitious rules and customs associated with gers. Mongolians have always taken wholeheartedly to Tibetan Buddhism and the links between Mongolia and Tibet are old and deep. Once in a lifetime, every devout Buddhist Mongolian tries to reach the holy city of Lhasa; the Tibetans in turn have relied on various Mongolian tribes to sustain their power. In Mongolia at the time of the communist takeover in 1921, there were 110,000 lamas (monks) living in about 700 monasteries. Beginning in the 1930s, thousands of monks were arrested, sent to Siberian labour camps and never heard from again. Monasteries were closed and ransacked and all religious worship and ceremonies outlawed. Not until 1990 was freedom of religion restored. Since then, there's been a phenomenal revival of Buddhism (and other religions). Monasteries have reopened, and even some ex-Communist Party officials have become lamas. Monasteries and temples (

Gerlee explained many aspects of Mongolia culture to me. In many ways, she was my Mongolian Culture teacher. She was one of my best students. After her graduation in 1996, she started working at the Erdenet Mining Corporation in the Commercial Department. She's now married and had her first child in September of 1998. This family belongs to one of my other best Mongolian friends, Oyunsuren. Pictured here are (L. to R.) Tungaa, Daria, Oyunsuren's grandmother, Oyunsuren, and Oyunsuren's mother. Oyunsuren also helped understand many things about Mongolian culture. Her family always helped me while I was in Mongolia (and even after I left). She is now married to a doctor and has a beautiful one year old daughter. One day she hopes to study language assessment in America. Hey, these girls don't look Mongolian!! Well, they aren't! Actually the town that I worked in, Erdenet, had many Russian ethnic groups.

Mongolian Culture What is Culture? Political Culture? Material Culture: The Ger, the Deel, and the Altar in the 20th Century Mongolian Political Culture of Democracy from Genghis Khan to Today Democratic ... Back to Main What is Political Culture? In order to talk about a country's political culture, we must first define culture. Anthropologists have worked on a definition of culture for over 150 years. The definition used by many anthropologists today comes from Professor Clifford Geertz of the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton University. He wrote, Believing that man is an animal suspended in webs of significance he himself has spun, I take culture to be those webs, and the analysis of it to be . . . an interpretive [science] in search of meaning. In other words, while people create a culture just as the spider creates a web, people cannot live without culture any more than a spider can survive without its web. And just as different species of spider build webs with different patterns, so different groups of people create different cultures. What then is culture? It is the lens through which groups of people (members of a society or an entire society) interpret the things they observe and experience. This lens varies from one culture to another. One culture may interpret an exploding volcano as the result of shifting tectonic plates in the earth's crust; another may interpret it as the anger of some force or god at the misbehavior of a people.

    Mongolia: Festival Promotes Culture, Tourism
By Beatrice Hogan Land-locked Mongolia, long overshadowed by its powerful neighbors China and Russia, has launched a campaign to boost its profile. A big part of its effort is a summer-long Mongolian cultural festival in New York City. Correspondent Beatrice Hogan reports that Mongolian officials hope that promoting their country will help trigger growth in trade and tourism. New York, 20 June 2000 (RFE/RL) Mongolia, a country most often associated with Genghis Khan and the Gobi Desert, is trying to update its public image and emerge from obscurity. Mongolian officials have chosen New York as their main venue of publicity. For the first time ever, Mongolian culture has received prime booking in the city's cultural calendar. A summer-long festival of Mongolian culture kicked off on May 19 with a "naadam," a festival that showcased traditional sports including archery and wrestling food, dances, and songs. Mongolian artwork and dinosaur fossils are on display at New York museums, and a special facility to breed the endangered snow leopard has been constructed at the Bronx Zoo. Palgi Gyamcho sits on the board of directors of the Mongol-American Cultural Association, a non-profit organization that raised money for the festival. He told RFE/RL that he hopes the festival will raise awareness of his country.

The Mongol Khans and their Empire The Adventures of Ibn Battuta: A Muslim Traveller of the 14th Century by Ross E. Dunn
University of California Press, 1990; ISBN: 0520067436

This is not a translation of the writings of Ibn Battuta (an important primary source) but rather a good and highly readable synthesis of his 24 years of travel. While predominantly a vision of the many cultures of the Islamic world of the fourteenth century, Dunn also details Battuta's travels in the steppe lands of southern Russia and in Yuan dynasty China.
