    History
Under Ottoman yoke set up in Moldova in the middle of the XVI century, constant incursions of the Turks and Crimean Tatar, increase of duties, the town development had been happening slowly and the country was in decay. Firstly being a boyar and since 1641 a monastic patrimony, Kishinev was repeatedly destroyed. The first remaining scheme of Kishinev refers to the beginning of the XIX century. It testifies about the fact that the town in the middle of the XIX century constituted the assemblage of dirty pise houses with reed roofs without firmly determined districts and streets. In the photograph there is a sight at the town from the side of an embankment along future Renastere Avenue. The Bik was partitioned off with dams with mills and mechanisms for skin processing and leather manufacture. Over the dwelling part of the town swarms of flies and gnats were hovering. The Bik used to frequently overflow. The puddles and bogs were the consequence of winter flood and autumn rains. The planned building of the town was begun in 1818. In 1834 the government adopted a general plan of the Kishinev development. From 1829 till 1834 wells, that provided the most part of the population with water, were improved in Kishinev. At the expense of the Town Council (Duma)

The First Building of the Railway Station
The Tiraspol-Kishinev railway communication, being the first railway in Moldova, was opened in August 1871. The first building of the railway station was built in 1870. This was the unique three-storey building, amazing people with perfection of its forms. It was completely destroyed in the years of World War II. The railway land site was formerly looking like this (from the "Cosmos" Hotel). On the railway land site, waiting for the Bucharest-Kishinev train, the solid cab drivers are standing by their cabs and carriages, sifting out rich passengers. The view of the adjacent square from the side of Iury Gagarin Boulevard.  The present building of the railway station was erected in 1948, being projected by architect L.M. Chuprin with A.V.Shusev's participation. The railway station is located in the valley of the Bik. This is the railway station after the building completion. At that time, the destination of two tram routes, being the main kind of transport in Kishinev, was by the railway station.

A historic passageway between Asia and S Europe, Moldova was often subject to invasion and warfare. It is historically part of a greater Moldavia, the main part of which was an independent principality in the 14th cent. and came under Ottoman Turkish rule in the 16th cent. It became a highly fortified Turkish border region and was a frequent target in Russo-Turkish wars. East Moldavia passed to Russia in 1791. Russia acquired further Moldavian territory in 1793 and especially in 1812, when the Russians received all of Bessarabia (the name for the area of Moldavia between the Prut and Dniester rivers). The rest of Moldavia remained with the Turks and later passed to Romania, which seized Bessarabia in 1918. In 1924, the USSR, refusing to sanction the seizure, established the Moldavian ASSR in Ukraine, with Tiraspol as the capital. Romania was forced to cede Bessarabia to the USSR in 1940. The predominantly Ukrainian districts in the south and around Khotin in the north were incorporated into Ukraine, as were parts of the Moldavian ASSR; the rest was merged with what remained of the Moldavian ASSR and made a constituent republic. Taken by Romania in 1941, the republic was reconquered by the USSR in 1944. In June, 1990, the Moldavian SSR adopted a measure calling for greater sovereignty within the USSR. In Aug., 1991, Moldova, which is the Romanian name of the region, was declared an independent republic; Mircea Snegur was elected president, and it reluctantly joined the Russian-dominated

    HISTORY
Moldova occupies most of what has been known as Bessarabia.
Moldova's location has made it a historic passageway between Asia
and southern Europe, as well as the victim of frequent warfare. Greeks,
Romans, Huns, and Bulgars invaded the area, which in the 13th century
became part of the Mongol empire. An independent Moldovan state
emerged briefly in the 14th century but fell under Ottoman Turkish rule in the 16th century. After the Russo-Turkish War of 1806-12, the eastern half of Moldova (Bessarabia) between the Prut and the Dniester Rivers was ceded to Russia, while Romanian Moldova (west of the Prut) remained with the Turks. Romania, which gained independence in 1878, took control of the Russian half of Moldova in 1918. The Soviet Union never recognized the seizure and created an autonomous Moldavian republic on the east side of the Dniester River in 1924. In 1940, Romania was forced to cede eastern Moldova to the U.S.S.R.

    History of Moldova
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. The country first became known as "Moldova" when it was sanctioned to the territory of a Hungarian noble. He named it this because the Molda river flowed through his crown granted land. The Hungarian crown gave this noble the land to guard the Hungarian's North-Eastern flank. The new nation ceeded from Hungarian sovereignty. The Moldovians were sujecated to vassal status by the ottoman turks after their hard fought conquest of Wallachia. The greatest Moldavian, aptly named Stefan the Great. He and his army of Boyars and retainers fought of invasions from the Turks, the Polish, and the Tartars. Stefan fought 36 major battles and only lost 2. At the end of his reign, Moldovian independence was secured and no more Moldovian gold went to turkish hands as tribute. Moldova then experienced a "slump." Weak kings let incompitent boyars rule the state and not pay taxes, bankrupting the state. With little money for defense, Turkish, Polish, Tartar raids left the country poor and war torn.
