Minnesota Road Trip A Minnesota Geography Lesson Plan Summary : This intermediate to middle-grade lesson plan is designed to explore four of the five themes of geography (location, place, movement, and regions) as they relate to Minnesota through planning a seven-day trip around the state. Though this activity can be done individually, it works best if students complete it in groups of three or four. Suggested time for the project is about five hours (five one-hour class periods). Objectives : 1) Students will plan a week-long trip around the state of Minnesota which includes all four regions of the state. 2) Students will write a detailed itinerary for their trip which consists of descriptions of each day's agenda including both places visited and routes traveled to get from place to place. 3) Students will fill in a blank map of Minnesota with the places and routes listed in their itinerary. Rand McNally recently published Minnesota Studies, which includes more than 30 maps and accompanying lessons for middle-school students developed by Gersmehl. She also published Minnesota Studies and Food for Thought. She teaches introductory and advanced courses in cartography and geographic information that focus on visualization and analysis of spatial data. David Lanegran Urban Studies/Human Geography/Flooding/ Geography Education Lanegran is a expert on urban development and planning issues around the world, the history of the Twin Cities and the Iron Range area of Minnesota. He is also a resource on riverfront development in St. Paul. He has published numerous books and articles and is working on a book examing the residential patterns of the Twin Cities. He is the co-author of Grand Avenue: The Renaissance of an Urban Street. He teaches courses in human and urban geography. In addition, Lanegran is past president of the National Council for Geographic Education and serves as coordinator for the Minnesota Geography Alliance, which administers programming for K-12 geography teachers and students in the state. Due to its northern location, Minnesota’s climate is cooler than most other continental states. Minnesota, however, does enjoy four distinct seasons including warm summers and cold, snowy winters. Central Minnesota temperatures in July average from 60 to 85 degrees F (16-29 C), while January temperatures typically range from 5 to 20 degrees F (-157 C). Average annual precipitation ranges from 18 inches (46 cm) in the northwest to over 30 inches (76 cm) in the southeast. Approximately 65% of this precipitation falls in the form of rain between May and September. Average annual snowfall ranges from 70 inches (178 cm) along Lake Superior to 36 inches (91 cm) in the southwest.

In Memory: Regents' Professor Emeritus John R. Borchert John R. Borchert passed away on March 30, 2001. We have lost a dear friend, a generous colleague, an inspiring teacher, a public citizen. Now we turn to the loving and piognant work of capturing this well-lived life in a few short words. We will be inadequate to the task. John was a member of the University of Minnesota geography faculty from 1949 to 1989, and to 2001 was still an active and vital presence in our geography community. John earned his A.B. degree at DePauw University in 1941. After working briefly in the private sector in North Dakota, where he met Jane, John joined the Air Force as a meteorologist, spending some time in training at M.I.T. After the war ended, John decidied to become a university professor. He earned his PhD. in geography at the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1949, and joined the Minnesota geography faculty shortly afterward. "One of the things that appealed to me about this area was the setting of the University in an urban area. It was an opportunity to work on real problems and immediate questions with people who were helping to make and shape the maps, not just interpret them." In those days, when the department was small, "we would assemble and argue about the nature of geography." (One of the six or seven graduate students at that time was Fred Lukermann.) At mid-career, as the department's graduate student population grew, John's urban field study trips to Chicago, by train, became notorious. Graduate students preferred that mode of transportation, because John's constant attention to the passing landscape made it extremely hazerdous to let him drive a van.

NORTH DAKOTA STATE UNIVERSITY - FARGO, N D DEPARTMENT OF GEOSCIENCES NORTH DAKOTA STATE UNIVERSITY WARREN DONALD KRESS Warren Donald Kress (Click to enlarge, 33K) Warren Donald Kress died on Thursday, August 23, 2001, of complications of Lou Gehrig's Disease (amytrophic lateral sclerosis), with which he was diagnosed in March, 1999. Warren was born on April 15, 1921, in Saint Paul, Minnesota. He graduated from St. Paul Central High School in 1939 in the largest graduating class in Minnesota history at that time. He enrolled in the University of Minnesota but left in 1942 to volunteer for the draft. He served in the 518th Military Police Battalion in New York City before going to Officer Candidate School at Fort Custer, Michigan. He became a civil affairs/military government officer and landed on Juno Beach during the Normandy Invasion on D+1 with an inter-allied unit. He continued across France and into Germany until the end of the war. He returned to Saint Paul in January, 1946, as a captain, and remained in the reserve until 1964, attaining the rank of major. He belonged to units at Fort Snelling in Saint Paul and later to a unit in Fargo. Warren returned to the University of Minnesota and completed his degree in geography in 1946. He taught at the U of M and later at Saint Cloud State University before coming to North Dakota State University in 1957. He remained on the NDSU faculty until his retirement in 1991. He had attained the rank of professor, and was made professor emeritus on his retirement. He received his PhD from the U of M in 1962.
