Artificial Turf Fields Popular in Local Schools
Sparta/Kent City area, MI. November19, 2002.
(Article reprinted with permission from theSparta Kent City Advance) Yet Mother Nature had other plans. Heavy rains made Pat Patterson Athletic Field so muddy the teams faced off at Forest Hills Central High School instead. Schools around the area have been facing the same situation, as rain and constant use make murky messes out of that which was once lush and green. In some cases games have been relocated and officials confronted by what they say are the worst field conditions in years. So many activities competing for time and space meant that grass was constantly being dug up by flying tackles and marching feet, especially after rainy days. The school finished installing an artificial turf field in August, a few hours before its first football game of the season. According to Stefanowski, the results have been favorable, with the new surface proving to be both durable and weather resistant. The result is a strong and supple surface that does not need a period of non-use for re-growth, especially after a hot West Michigan summer that left grass roots shallow and a subsequent rainfall that brought those roots to the surface.

Make Michigan Schools Second to None If there is one issue on which Democrats and Republicans can agree, it's that the future success of our children depends on the quality of our schools. The question, of course, is how best to deliver a quality education to our kids. I know from first-hand experience there are no easy solutions to this problem but it is a challenge we must confront. I am a three-term Bay County Prosecutor, and I can tell you the best way to prevent tomorrow's crime is to care for today's children. It is imperative that we focus Michigan's resources on making our public schools the envy of the nation. As a Democratic candidate for Attorney General, I am often asked my position on issues ranging from school voucher plans to the creation of charter schools. I believe my background and experience makes me uniquely suited to discuss the hurdles facing educators in the classroom. My wife JoAnn and I are the parents of two children who attend Michigan public schools. For the past five years, JoAnn has worked as a first-grade teacher at an "at-risk" public school in Bay City, which helps impoverished youths become better students.

Review of Charter School Legislation Provisions Related to Students with Disabilities, September 1998
General Legislative Provisions
This first part of the review examines statutory provisions that have implications for, but do not necessarily address directly, students with disabilities or special education. Various provisions in state statutes grant charter schools varying levels of authority to govern themselves and to make decisions regarding the operation of the schools, including decisions related to personnel, curriculum, and expenditures. The extent of a charter school's operational autonomy will have an impact on how special education programs are implemented in these schools. As described in the following paragraphs, statutory provisions that give higher levels of autonomy include ones that allow or require charter schools to (1) operate independent from local school districts, (2) make their own personnel decisions, (3) be exempt from state and district education laws and regulations, (4) assume liability for their actions, and (5) receive their funding directly from the state. Independence from districts.
