Email Us October 18, 1999 Contact: CDC, Division of Media Relations CDC awards funds to universities for research on how to prevent disease and injuries As part of its new strategy to strengthen and expand the nation's public health research programs at universities, CDC announced today grants of $12.5 million to fund 50 research projects at academic health centers, research centers and university-affiliated programs across the country. The funding is part of CDC's Prevention Research Initiative, an effort to link the talents and skills of university-based scientists with the resources of health departments, community-based programs, and national organizations. "The awards ensure that public health research activities address problems affecting the nation's communities," says Dr. Jeffrey P. Koplan, director of the CDC. "The grants will help CDC and its partners conduct research that can directly improve community health and reduce the need for medical care." The grants cover a range of subjects, including prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, asthma, genetics and home, workplace and recreational injuries. (See complete list attached.) PRESS CONTACT: NYC DOHMH Office of Communications DOHMH reports that the increase is primarily due to a recent outbreak of syphilis among gay and bisexual men. Overall, 93% of reported cases (263 cases) occurred among men in 2001. Among the 188 men who provided information on sexual partners, 149 cases (79%) reported male sexual partners. Comparatively, there were 62 cases among gay and bisexual men in 2000 and 33 cases in 1999 (77% and 42% of cases among men interviewed, respectively). NYC health officials are particularly concerned about the proportion of gay and bisexual men diagnosed with syphilis in 2001 who were co-infected with HIV (48%), and about reports of risk behavior likely due to factors including availability of effective treatment, prevention burnout, misperceptions of risk, and the impact of other health problems such as depression and substance abuse.

The Development of School Libraries in South Carolina By Nancy Jane Day (Taken from a television program produced at the University of South Carolina about 1973) Miss Day was introduced by Nancy Burge. We are so glad to have Miss Nancy Jane Day who was the first state school library supervisor of South Carolina until she retired two years ago, to come and talk with us today about the development of school libraries. I am sure that she will not only talk about the development of school libraries in South Carolina but in the southeast and the nation because we cannot talk about one area without getting into others. Please feel free to ask questions any time and at the conclusion of her remarks we are going to do a little discussion about what she just said. Miss Day, welcome and the floor is yours. The supervisor of library services was paid by the General Education Board for the first year and a half, and her travel expense was paid by them also; at the end of that time the State Board of Education took it over. Until then we had had no one, and Mrs. Spain had worked with the Board, and had gotten their commitment to continue the program if we started it. One of the important things I think with the program is, the fact that once it was started we had a continuing program. Several of the states had them and then their supervisors resigned; so the program was dropped for a year and a half or two years until another was appointed. There were some real problems in some of the states because of this, but we did have a continuing program here. Mr. Fred McQuisten was the person with the GEB with whom we workgd at that time, and to whom I made the report after my first year of work.

Through Public Act 25 of 1990, known as the Quality Issues package, a model core curriculum that includes technology outcomes for K-12 education was established. Through P.A. 25, schools are in the process of planning for and implementing these technology outcomes for all students. An estimated 34 percent of Michigan school districts have reported progress in implementing the technology outcomes. State Efforts In response to the State Board's directive, Michigan's State Technology Plan: 1992-97 was developed to assist local, regional, and state agencies in planning and utilizing technology to achieve broad educational outcomes. The five-year plan includes information about current services and systems that involve computers, electronic bulletin board systems, videodiscs, read-only compact discs, two-way interactive television systems, satellite and cable television programming, integrated learning systems, and multimedia. The State Technology Plan addresses technology issues concerning all learners receiving services from local and intermediate school districts, post-secondary institutions including teacher preparation programs, and adult education programs.

Technology in the Media Center column1255 by Ric Wiltse Media specialists are active on the World Wide Web In exploring the World Wide Web one rainy Saturday a couple of months ago, we came across the pages for East Middle School in Holland, Michigan. Having toured the school soon after it was built a few years ago, we were interested to find that their site had a great deal if information on the school, its programs and its staff. Media specialist for EMS is Peter Butts . Peter, well known for his many contributions to our profession, had posted a wealth of information on his pages on the EMS site. His efforts are a great example of how media specialists can create web pages that give insights into what Peter is doing with his program at East Middle, and also about Peter as a person. Peter's home page ( http://www.macatawa.org/~ems/Butts.html ) offers the option to link to information about his professional and personal interests. A picture of Peter is also on this page, as well as a link to send him an electronic mail message. Personal Interests On the personal interests page, we are able to link to Peter's biography. This link that was not working at the time, so we were unable to find out his life story! We were able to learn, however, that his musical preferences leaned to the Beatles, Indigo Girls, Grateful Dead, and Rusted Root.

RESEARCH TV coverage of victims in three Michigan markets Sue Carter , Michigan State University, School of Journalism Introduction With escalating vehemence, Americans are voicing their dismay over the media's coverage of violence. They are distressed with the depictions of crime and its victims and bothered by privacy invasions. A particular target for their concern is local television news. The print media have seized upon this frustration and have increasingly castigated local broadcast TV. Newspaper follow-up stories on the Rocky Mountain Media Watch Survey of 100 stations, that rated stories according to a "mayhem" index, tended to trumpet the survey's results. For example, The Oakland Press in Pontiac, Mich. headlined the conclusions "Study: Channel 7 Most Violent." The accompanying story revealed that the Rocky Mountain survey had named Detroit's WXYZ one of the greatest purveyors of violence. The study's authors declared the station's news coverage contained crime 92.6 percent of the time. Only well into the body of the newspaper's account was the research methodology discussed. (Crumm, 1997) It remains, according to established academic researchers, flawed. Even the New York Times Magazine chose not to resist an attack in the January 11, 1998 article by Michael Winerip, "Does Local TV News Have to Be So Bad?" It was subtitled: "Looking for an 11 O'Clock Fix." Winerip approached his topic with fair balance of local television news coverage as seen through the microcosm of the Orlando, Fla. market. Notwithstanding the efforts to achieve balance in the magazine story, the headline certainly set the tone for the magazine's view of local television news and victims of violence. Article by Doug Johnson Home Articles Contact information Column title, periodical, and issue: Media Trends in the Midwest, Media Educator (Georgia Library Media Association), Winter 1997 While I am flattered at being asked to write about what is happening around the Midwest, I have to say up front that you need to read this article knowing that: my information about the things that are happening in states other than Minnesota comes primarily what I read on LM_Net and from attending state library media conferences in Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois; and I tend to be very much an optimist when it comes to school media programs and education in general. How much you read is generalization based on fact, and how much is wishful thinking is difficult for even ME to separate. Be warned, Readers! Media programs in the Upper Midwest overall are better than they have ever been, and the right kind of library/media specialist is more valued than ever before. There are certainly exceptions. School districts facing systemic economic distress (Rockford, IL, for example) find the axe raised above their media programs, and librarians who cling to a text-only mind set find themselves often at odds with their students, staff, administration and the rest of the profession. But in the job-applicant glutted field of education, well-prepared media specialists find themselves in somewhat short supply. There is even a legislative initiative in Iowa to recruit teachers willing to go into media driven by the large number of non-certified media specialists now employed in schools in that state.

Beginning School Mathematics Beginning School Mathematics (BSM) is a professional development initiative for improving mathematics education in the primary grades. BSM provides a comprehensive program of professional development, a curriculum framework, and classroom materials for manipulative and language-based activities. These activities build on developmentally appropriate practice in the early years. Background to the Program Beginning School Mathematics was originally developed by the New Zealand Ministry of Education. In the late 1980s representatives from Oakland University observed the program in New Zealand schools. As a result, a pilot program was set up in Rochester, Michigan through the School of Education and Human Services at Oakland University. The BSM approach worked well in the US environment, so the program was implemented in a number of Michigan schools from 1989 onward. Schools participating in the project noted significant improvement in mathematics learning (measured by the Michigan State assessment tests). Improvement was also achieved in student attitudes toward mathematics and language capability. In 2000, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development took over national dissemination of BSM, along with the provision of a major professional development program based around BSM.
