McCarthy is the Executive Director and founder of Academically Talented Youth Programs (ATYP) and Accelerated Pre-College Programs at Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo. These programs provide high school and early college accelerated curriculum to Michigan's MTS students as a part of their school day. Carol has a long history of involvement with gifted education in Michigan, serving as a local school board trustee, a member of state education, gifted advocacy, and legislative committees, and as a parent.
