Mexicans have had a talent for art and color since pre-Hispanic times. Today, Mexico is covered with murals and littered with galleries of contemporary and historic art, which are a highlight of the country for many visitors. Mexican creativity is also expressed through the country's vibrant folk-art tradition. Notable examples of pre-Hispanic art include the Olmecs' monumental stone heads, the early has been described as ' Wuthering Heights set in Mexico and written by Kafka.' Laura Esquivel achieved huge success with Like Water for Chocolate Spanish is Mexico's predominant language, but Mexican Spanish differs from Castilian Spanish, the literary and official language of Spain, in two respects: in Mexico, the Castilian lisp has more or less disappeared, and numerous indigenous words have been adopted. Around 50 indigenous languages are spoken by about 7 million people in Mexico; 15% of these do not speak Spanish. Although Mexican governments since the revolution have been unsupportive of religion, 90% of the population professes to believe in Catholicism. While most of the indigenous people are Christian, their Christianity is usually fused with more ancient beliefs. Whole hierarchies of 'pagan' gods sometimes coexist with the Christian Trinity and saints. Since 1531, the most binding symbol of the Church has been the dark-skinned Virgin of Guadalupe, who is regarded as a link between Catholic and non-Catholic indigenous worlds.

MEXICO CULTURE AND HISTORY
The history of Mexico is extremely interesting. As one of the last major countries on earth to be established, it is remarkable that so much of the history of this country is so recent. Before the Revolucion of 1810 Mexico was just a large territory, and did not even have a constitution. The culture of today's Mexico is also unique. Many different elements have converged on this special country to create a culture that is unique to the world. A good book to read to gain more depth on Mexican history and culture is James Michner's "Mexico". This wonderful book takes the reader into the many facets of past and present day Mexico in a way that is very interesting every step of the way. For additional information on the history and culture of Mexico drop by the Mexico Expo Market link on the left side of this page and check out some of the books on Mexico. Mexico travelers interested in culture and archeology might want to visit the MEXICO WORLD HERITAGE SITES section of Mexico Expo.

Wow! A site about Mexican regional dances and the first page with embedded music. The idea is great! But it looks like the site was more or less abandoned. Don't Miss our guadalajara mexico Guides and Newsletters! guadalajara mexico Mexico's second largest city, the City of Roses, is a tourist and retirement center offering stately architecture, colonial plazas, outstanding weather and a charm not found in many large cities. Parks, fountains and wide boulevards dot the city. Many expatriates, mainly Canadian and American, reside here, and the city is a center for education, the arts and native crafts.
Guadalajara has seen tremendous growth in recent years, and it struggles with traffic jams and air pollution, although not on the scale of Mexico City. The best day to visit is on Sunday when fewer automobiles are on the road. We recommend taking one of the calandrias that operate downtown. These horse-drawn carriage rides will take you on an hour's tour of some of Guadalajara's prettiest neighborhoods.
