Laterally related topics: Religion Time and Space Mathematics in Recreation Art ... Fractals , and Science The Mathematics and the Liberal Arts pages are intended to be a resource for student research projects and for teachers interested in using the history of mathematics in their courses. Many pages focus on ethnomathematics and in the connections between mathematics and other disciplines. The notes in these pages are intended as much to evoke ideas as to indicate what the books and articles are about. They are not intended as reviews. However, some items have been reviewed in Mathematical Reviews , published by The American Mathematical Society. When the mathematical review (MR) number and reviewer are known to the author of these pages, they are given as part of the bibliographic citation. Subscribing institutions can access the more recent MR reviews online through MathSciNet Hist. of Sci. (1990), no. 79, part 1, 6387. (Reviewer: David Singmaster.) Equations of Lines
posted on: 9/9/2002 4:50:33 PM My complaint": how "Equations of Lines" is taught by some.
I'm retired from teaching now, so I should no longer care.
Yet in so many math-help sites, I see others use "y = mx + b" for every problem. I've seen texts which teach FOUR formulas. I'm sure there are teachers who require their students to know all four. Point-Slope: y - y1 = m(x - x1) Slope-Intercept: y = mx + b Two Points: y - y1 = (y2-y1)/(x2-x1)*(x - x1) Two Intercept: x/a + y/b = 1 I saw years ago that one is needed: the Point-Slope. Given a point and slope, we use the Point-Slope. (duh!) Given slope m and the y-intercept b: We have a point (0,b) and the slope. Use the Point-Slope Formula. (double-duh!) Given two points: Use the Slope Formula to find the slope m.
