Mathematics Sequence of Courses

The sequence in which mathematics courses are taken is very important. The chart on the next page illustrates the relationship among courses, the most elementary courses appearing at the top. Students begin and end at some point determined by their previous mathematics experiences and the requirements of their programs. Mathematics Placement Tests
The placement tests are designed to help place a student into the proper course that fits with the student's background knowledge of mathematics. If a student wants credit for mastery in a class or to meet a mathematics requirement, the student needs to pursue 'Credit By Exam'. Credit By Exam can be initiated by a student picking up the step-by-step instruction sheet in the lobby of the Student Services Building, self serve area (Building 1). Review sheets are available to remind students of previously learned material. Mathematics review sheets may be obtained at the Bookstore and in the Mathematics Division when the Bookstore is closed for a nominal charge. Placement tests are given at the Testing and Assessment Office in Student Services (Building 1), Room 116. BT 020 10-Key Calculator 3 credits

Brief HistoryThe First 150 Years
by Wilfred Kaplan
A Talk at the Dedication of East Hall on Oct. 17, 1997
This is an overview of the story of the Mathematics Department in Ann Arbor. I provide some "snapshots." September 25, 1841. University first offers classes. There are seven students and two professors, Reverend George P. Williams teaching mathematics and science, Reverend Joseph Whiting teaching Greek and Latin. 1854. There are sixty-three freshmen. Curriculum covers algebra, geometry (Legendre), trigonometry, analytic geometry and calculus. 1863. Professor Edward Olney and an instructor do the teaching. 1877. There is a staff of five. Curriculum expands slightly, with encouragement to those who wish to study topics such as quaternions, calculus of variations, calculus of finite differences. 1881. A complete set of Crelle's Journal is donated to the tiny University Library. 1887. There are courses on projective geometry and theory of functions, including elliptic functions. 1888. Alexander Ziwet and Frank N. Cole join the department. Ziwet remained until 1925 and was a major influence through his courses, donation of many books to the library and a generous bequest, which funds the Ziwet lectures. Cole left in 1895. While at Michigan, he wrote papers on group theory and had as a student and colleague G. A. Miller, who published many papers on group theory. Both Ziwet and Cole were much involved with formation of the American Mathematical Society (AMS), of which Cole was secretary from 1896 to 1920. The department's Mathematics Club began before 1891 in Ziwet's parlor.

To fulfill the University's graduation requirements, all students are required to complete a basic math skills competency requirement and a general education mathematics requirement as a part of the exploratory curriculum.
Math Skills Competency Requirement
Competency in basic mathematics is essential in our technologically oriented society. All undergraduates are required to demonstrate competency in basic mathematics in one of the following ways:
  • Score 500 or more on the quantitative SAT-I exam if taken prior to April 1995. Score 580 or more on the quantitative SAT-I exam if taken April 1995 or later. Score 25 or more on the ACT math test. Transfer in with a C (2.0) or better in MAT 1225, Calculus, or its college level equivalent. (MAT 1221, Survey of Calculus, does not meet this requirement.) Pass SPU's Mathematics Proficiency Examination. Complete the required work in Arithmetic Review (MAT 0121-MAT 0125) as revealed by the proficiency test results. Successfully complete all 5 credits in Arithmetic Review.

General Education Courses Purpose: The Department of MathematicsÂ’ general education courses aim to prepare students to communicate logically, become proficient at quantitative reasoning, and to think critically and analytically. The courses intend to enable students to deal comfortably with the basic notions of number and chance and to acquire mathematical tools to help reach their career objectives. University Level Courses: Mat 101, Mathematics for Elementary Teachers, develops studentsÂ’ understanding of the mathematics needed to teach elementary school. Topics include sets, functions, logic, the real number system, number theory, and problem solving. The course is mainly for early childhood, elementary education, and special education majors. Mat 103, Introduction to Mathematics, is a liberal arts introduction to the nature and beauty of mathematics. Topics include logic, graph theory, probability, and decision theory. An additional topic is chosen from finance, geometry, and statistics.

Mathematics is a part of our daily experience, playing a major role in the facts and graphs we use to make decisions, guiding science and the social sciences, and helping us understand numbers and shapes. But as every college graduate should know, mathematics is much more than this. It is a logical structure that seeks to justify new facts based on explicit conditions, using logical arguments. It is a language that is precise and concise. It is a body of problem solving techniques. And finally, it is a fascinating subject in its own right, with many startling discoveries and puzzling questions. For this reason, we expect students to learn a little about the mathematical notion of proof using the precision of mathematical language, a little about some important problem solving strategies, some scope of how mathematics is applied, and some idea of the scope of mathematical topics that have developed over the past several thousand years, including some that are being explored even today. ...
in which we discuss a wide range of topics to give you an idea what mathematics is all about.
