DESCRIPTION Back To Top
Highly-respected for its impeccable scholarship and elegant writing style, American History: A Survey continues its strong tradition of balanced coverage of the social, cultural, political, diplomatic, economic, and legal aspects of American history. Popular features such as Â'Where Historians DisagreeÂ' and Â'Environmental History Essays,Â' have been revised and updated, the last two chapters have been revised and reorganized, and the supplements package has been enhanced and expanded. The most significant revisions in this new 10th edition focus on a considerable expansion of social and cultural history. This coverage, integrated throughout the text, is most apparent in all-new boxed features called Â'Patterns of Popular CultureÂ' which provide commentary on the changing ways in which Americans entertained, educated, and amused themselves through the centuries.

The Influenza epidemic, 1918
The germs arrived by ship in Boston's port on a ship from Europe, and by September, 1918, thousands of people in Massachusetts were dying of Influenza, or "Spanish Flu" or "La Grippe."
Already, thousands of American soldiers were suffering from this epidemic in France, and now it swept from Boston to Philadelphia, to New York, and across the country.
By 1919, as the epidemic wound down, some 675,000 Americans had died, including some 43,000 soldiers in France. World wide, this pandemic killed from 20 to 40 million.
By September 11, 1918, influenza had spread from Boston's port to the whole civilian population.
Tents used as hospital for thousands of influenza patients, 1918.
We offer this touching reminder of the devastation this epidemic caused in one small church parish in Massachusetts:

I also understand the sensitivities surrounding people of African descent and labels in this country. Unfortunately, for many years, this country has not shown black folks much support. At first, these people, my ancestors, were not considered human, were deemed three-quarters of a man. Then, they were not allowed the right to vote (something that only changed in the South in 1965). They were labeled "Negro" (or worse), "colored," "Black," "Afro-American" and now "African-American." askharriette@harriettecole.com
