Woolly Rhino
Animal remains found in Pleistocene sediments can be divided in two groups:
  • Woolly Mammoth , Giant Irish Deer, Cave Bear, Musk Ox
  • Hippopotamus, Giant Sloth During the Pleistocene epoch of Europe and Asia - about 1.8 million years ago until about 10,000 years ago - the end of the last Ice Age - the fauna consisted of several species of rhinoceroses. One such species was the woolly rhinoceros - Coelodonta antiquitatis. Coelodonta had long, gray-brown, shaggy fur and two large horns (made of matted hair). The larger horn, at the tip of the snout, grew to be up to 3 feet (1 m) long in mature males. The woolly rhino was about 11 feet (3.5 m) long. The woolly rhino was an herbivore (a plant-eater). This species grazed temperate grasslands and tundra. It was adapted to eating the grass that grew on the Eurasian steppe. Its habitat was vast, extending from eastern Asia to the British Isles. However, unlike the woolly mammoth and other Pleistocene mammals, the woolly rhinoceros did not manage to migrate across the Bering Strait into North America. Mammoths lived in herds, the Wooly Rhino lived just as his recent relatives do, alone or in very small family groups.

"Jurassic Park" was a work of fiction. Pleistocene Park is in the process of becoming fact. A joint team of Japanese and Russian scientists arrived in the Siberian province of Yakutsk late last month to excavate a number of creatures that have been extinct for millennia including mammoths and woolly rhinoceroses. They plan to extract DNA from the frozen remains, cross-breed the retrieved nuclei with the creatures' modern-day counterparts and return the resurrected dinosaurs to a vast "safari park" in northern Siberia. "It probably sounds a little far-fetched, but it's absolutely possible to do this," said professor Akira Iritani, who is coordinating the project from Osaka's Kinki University. "It would be no problem having people visit the park, although infrastructure would need to be built, such as accommodations for the tourists, because Siberian winters are extremely severe," he said. And the 72-year-old Iritani knows what he is talking about. In January, he announced that the university's School of Biology-Oriented Science and Technology, of which he is the dean, had transplanted a spinach gene into a pig to change the animal's fat into less fatty linoleic acid. The result is healthier pork products.

    http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Galaxy/8152/larryagenbroad.html
DINO LAND PALEONTOLOGY INTERVIEWS LARRY AGENBROAD The Jarkov Mammoth, the famed specimen Larry Agenbroad studied. Last October news agencies around the world were abuzz with the discovery of a nearly complete frozen mammoth carcass, found in the Siberian permafrost by a team of French, Dutch, and American scientists. The actual mammoth carcass was first discovered in 1997, when French explorer Bernard Buigues learned of the discovery of mammoth tusks by a group of local natives. Buigues explored the site they mentioned, and was astonished to find signs of a near complete mammoth carcass. Unfortunately, due to strange, odd, and drastic weather conditions, the excavation of this carcass had to be delayed for two years, until 1999, when Buigues and his team finally announced their discovery to the world. The discovery, nicknamed the Jarkov Mammoth, became an overnight hit, making the front page of several newspapers around the world and garnering spots in Time Magazine and on several American television programs. Much of the excitement was due to the thrilling possibility that the mammoth could be cloned, a somewhat outlandish, but media popular idea. The entire idea of cloning ancient animals extended back well before the first successful cloning of a living animal was performed. But, the notion gained much publicity after the 1993 release of Jurassic Park, the box office hit which starred cloned dinosaurs. Suddenly, this idea seemed more plausible to the public-but could science do it?
