NLST, the National Lung Screening Trial, is a research study sponsored by the National Cancer Institute for men and women at risk for lung cancer. NLST will compare two ways of detecting lung cancer: spiral computed tomography (CT) and standard chest X-ray. Both chest X-rays and spiral CT scans have been used to find lung cancer early. So far, neither chest X-rays nor spiral CT scans has been shown to reduce a person's chance of dying from lung cancer. This study will aim to show if either test is better at reducing deaths from this disease . . . more info Participants must be: healthy men and women aged 55 to 74; current or former smokers who have smoked heavily, or have smoked for many years; people who have never had lung cancer; and people who are not being treated for any type of cancer . . . more info

We have championed this cause for over 10 years now and developed an approach that benefits current and future lung cancer sufferers alike:
Scientific research
to detect lung cancer at a very early stage, which is vital to the development of a future therapy.
Dedicated lung cancer nurses offering information, guidance and support relevant to the needs of lung cancer patients and their families.
Support Groups
that assist sufferers to come to terms with the disease and provide patient advocacy services.
Quit smoking
services for adults and our KATS (Kids Against Tobacco Smoke) educational programme that encourages young people never to start.
Fundraising events
and our Charity Shops both of which help to generate much needed voluntary donations (public and corporate) on which we rely.

BEIR VI - Executive Summary
Released to EPA by permission of The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) February 19, 1998
Biological Effects of Ionizing Radiation (BEIR) VI Report: "The Health Effects of Exposure to Indoor Radon"
INTRODUCTION
This National Research Council's report of the sixth Committee on Biological Effects of Ionizing Radiations (BEIR VI) addresses the risk of lung cancer associated with exposure to radon and its radioactive progeny. Radon, a naturally occurring gas formed from the decay of uranium in the earth, has been conclusively shown in epidemiologic studies of underground miners to cause lung cancer. There is supporting evidence from experimental studies of animals that confirm radon as a cause of lung cancer and from molecular and cellular studies that provide an understanding of the mechanisms by which radon causes lung cancer. In addition to being present at high concentrations in many types of underground mines, radon is found in homes and is also present outdoors. Extensive measurements of indoor radon concentrations in homes show that although concentrations vary widely, radon is universally present, raising concerns that radon in homes increases lung-cancer risk for the general population, especially those who spend a majority of their time indoors at home. For the purpose of developing public policy to manage the risk associated with indoor radon, there is a need to characterize the possible risks across the range of exposures received by the population. The higher end of that range of exposures is comparable to those exposures that caused lung cancer in underground miners. The lower end of that range includes exposures received from an average indoor lifetime exposure which is at least one order of magnitude lower.

How common is lung cancer in women?
Lung cancer is the largest single cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. (28% of all cancer deaths.) For years, men were at higher risk for lung cancer because of their higher smoking rates. However, with the rising number of women who smoke, lung cancer surpassed breast cancer in 1987 as the leading cause of cancer deaths among women.
Can I develop lung cancer if I don't smoke?
87% of lung cancer is caused by smoking, so what about the other 13%? There is evidence that exposure to tobacco smoke in the home, usually from a smoking spouse, may increase the risk of lung cancer in non-smoking women. Nearly 9 out of 10 non-smoking Americans are exposed to environmental tobacco smoke (also known as "second-hand" smoke), as measured by levels of nicotine in their blood. The best scientific studies show that restrictions on second hand smoke reduce the risk of death and injury to non-smokers, including the hundreds of thousands of children with asthma and other respiratory illness. The FDA has classified second-hand smoke as a Group A carcinogen (known to cause cancer in humans.) Studies have also evaluated environmental tobacco exposure outside the home, either in a work or social setting but they provide inconclusive results. More studies are needed to determine how much exposure might be harmful in any of these settings.
