WHAT IS LUNG CANCER? Lung cancer is the leading cancer killer in both men and women. There were an estimated 164,100 new cases of lung cancer and an estimated 156,900 deaths from lung cncer in the United States in 2000. The rate of lung cancer cases appears to be dropping among white and African-American men in the United States, while it continues to rise among both white and African-American women. There are two major types of lung cancer: non-small cell lung cancer and small cell lung cancer . Non-small cell lung cancer is much more common. It usually spreads to different parts of the body more slowly than small cell lung cancer. Squamous cell carcinoma, ademocarcinoma, and large cell carcinoma are three types of non-small cell lung cancer. Small cell lung cancer also called oat cell cancer, accounts for about 20% of all lung cancer. WHAT CAUSES LUNG CANCER?

According to lung cancer officials, the chance to snap up a brand that is more widely associated with lung cancer than lung cancer itself was too enticing to pass up. "The 'lung cancer' brand certainly evokes something powerful and terrible, but that brand essence is palpable only in English-speaking markets," explained lung cancer marcom director Reginald Hacking-Coughlin. "In terms of global markets, it lacks universality. That is, if you're in Spain, you cannot just say lung cancer, you have to say cáncer de pulmón . In Germany, it's

UI study finds residential radon exposure poses a significant lung cancer risk
IOWA CITY, Iowa Long-term exposure to radon in the home is associated with lung cancer risk and presents a significant environmental health hazard, according to a study led by researchers at the University of Iowa College of Public Health. The Iowa Radon Lung Cancer Study, funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, included investigators from the UI, St. John's University in Collegeville, Minn. and the University of Kansas. The results are published in the June 1 issue of the American Journal of Epidemiology. From 1993 to 1997, the researchers studied 1,027 Iowa women 413 who were newly diagnosed with lung cancer and 614 "controls" ages 40 to 84 who had lived in their homes for the past 20 years or more. The women studied in both groups included smokers as well as nonsmokers. Women were studied because they typically have less occupational exposures to substances that may cause lung cancer, and historically have spent more time in the home. The researchers found that close to 60 percent of the basement radon concentrations for both the lung cancer cases (study participants with lung cancer) and the control group (participants without lung cancer) exceeded the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency action level for radon of 4 picoCuries per liter (pCi/L). The researchers found that 33 percent of living areas for the lung cancer cases, and 28 percent of the living areas for the control group, exceeded the EPA's action level of 4 pCi/L.

Washington Post, Health [10/27/98] Consider these facts: Women who smoke are more likely to get lung cancer than men who smoke. Women's lung cancer rates more than doubled between 1974 and 1994. 23,000 more women will die of lung cancer this year than of breast cancer. In general, women have a harder time quitting than men. Since women's magazines are a popular source of health information, the Society for the Advancement of Women's Health Research is calling on them to stop running advertisements for tobacco products. The society scanned the April issues of 21 women's magazines and counted up the cigarette ads in each. The count ranged from no ads in New Woman, Self, Shape or Weight Watchers to nine pages of ads in Vogue. More disturbing, however, was the apparent message of independence, self-reliance, attractiveness, and leanness of female smokers often portrayed in these advertisements. Additionally, those women's magazines that included cigarette advertisements were reported to have little or nothing to say about the hazards of smoking (Warner et al., 1992). Thus, the American Council on Science and Health (ACSH) evaluated a representative sample of women's magazines (12 women's magazines with a large female readership for the period from August 1999 through August 2000) to determine the quantity and nature of their health, lifestyle and fitness messages. We used as an indicator the magazines' acceptance of cigarette advertisements. We then assessed the presence of smoking-related messages in their articles and photographs. Finally, we evaluated the quality and nature of the magazines' health messages. Of particular interest was how the magazines' coverage of the profound health problems associated with smoking, especially lung cancer, compared to that of other real or alleged health risks.
