Luge:
Watch the world's fastest athletes attack the world's fastest course lying down. Luge sleds weigh 50 or 60 pounds, depending on the event, and fly at speeds exceeding 80 miles per hour. To appreciate the speed, see it in person!! Luge and skeleton events take place at the Verizon Sports Complex and event schedules can be found on the calendar of events. Skeleton:
What a great name for a sport!! Lie down on a sled that looks like a cafeteria tray. Put your chin about six inches above the ice and roar down the course at 75 to 80 miles per hour. Everybody does it!! Lake Placid's Jimmy Shea is Olympic gold medalist as well as past world and Winter Goodwill Games champion. Check out World Cup Skeleton action December 6, 2002.

Briton Paula Radcliffe hopes to break her own world record in London.
Marathoner Paula Radcliffe already owns the world record but can she improve on it in her home country on Sunday? London Marathon race director David Bedford thinks Radcliffe can beat 2 hours, 17 minutes, 18 seconds, which she ran in Chicago. However, the IAAF's decision to allow pace-setting has made marathon records absurd , Jeff Hollobaugh writes.

Luge
The luge is a type of small sled on which one or two persons, lying face up, slide feet first down snowy hillsides or down steeply banked, curving, iced chutes similar to those used in bobsledding. Shifting weight, pulling straps attached to the runners, or using the feet accomplishes steering.

Competition
The first international race took place in 1883 with 21 competitors from seven nations, including the United States. The race was organized by hotels in the Swiss spa of Davos and took place over the 4-kilometer road from St. Wolfgang to Klosters. With the development of a more flexible sled came the "kunstbahn," or artificial track, which provided luge enthusiasts with a more challenging course. The first World Championships in the sport were held in 1955 in Oslo, Norway, with 52 competitors from eight nations. Two years later the lugers broke away from the FIBT, the bobsled and toboggan federation, to form their own Federation Internationale de Luge de Course (FIL). In 1961 at the International Olympic Committee meetings in Athens, three luge events men's singles, doubles and women's singles were added to the 1964 Olympic program.

Luge Through the Years

Encyclopedia: Luge
...
Olympice Preview: Skeleton
Luge, which takes its name from the French word for sled, is one of the fastest Olympic sports, with riders exceeding 90 mph.
The action will be even faster than normal in Salt Lake City, where the Olympic Park track, which consists of 17 curves over 4,318 ft, is recognized as the fastest luge run in the world.
There are three divisions in the luge competition: men's singles, women's singles, and doubles. Luge doubles can be contested by either sex but the teams are almost always made up of two men.
The singles format for Olympic luge is unique. Instead of the usual format of two timed runs in one day, athletes make four runs down the course over two days of competition. Men and women compete on the same track, but the women start the race at a point farther down the track.
The doubles competition, in which one rider lies on top of the other, uses the more traditional format. Each team makes two timed runs during the one-day competition. The team with the fastest total time is the winner.
Luge made its Olympic debut at the 1964 Innsbruck Games and has been dominated by a handful of countries. In fact, of the 90 medals that have been awarded since the event began, 88 have gone to athletes from Germany, Austria, Italy, or the former Soviet Union.

Posted 2/6/2003 3:47 AM Updated 2/6/2003 6:20 PM Salt Lake City turns Olympic exposure into gold This isn't the conclusion you'd necessarily reach after every Olympics, given that some hosts have been left with debt, or Olympic venues going largely unused or little pickup in their tourism business. That isn't happening in Salt Lake. The city's Convention and Visitors Bureau claims that just the last 10 months of 2002, after the Games ended in February, brought more convention travel to the city than any previous full year. And while overall U.S. hotel occupancy reached historically low levels last year, Salt Lake's 64% occupancy rate was its highest in at least five years. "And that wasn't just from the spike during the Games," says Visitors Bureau spokesman Jason Mathis. "Occupancy was up all year long." Utah's ski industry took a hit last season with skier visits off 9%. That was predictable, as recreational skiers stayed away in droves during the Games. But Nathan Rafferty, spokesman for Ski Utah, says the state's resorts garnered record traffic during the holiday season. "We'd like to think it was just from the Olympic exposure," he says. "But we also had a ton of early-season snow. And there's pent-up demand from the people who didn't come here last season because of the Games."

    http://dontmindme.com/2gbu0222.html
Main Page Good/Bad/Ugly But I Digress Stuff of the Month ... Message Board Winter Olympic Sports (Track) When I rated Winter Olympic Sports last week, I only rated snow sports, mainly to keep the list at a reasonable size. But when I look at the remaining eight sports, that's still a long list. So I'm breaking up the ice sports from the track sports. Now, I know that technically the track is lined with ice, so they could also be considered ice sports, but I don't feel like doing a rating of that many sports at one time. So here's my rating of winter Olympic track sports. Bobsleigh: Everyone calls this event bobsled, but technically it's bobsleigh. I've always considered a sleigh to be something that is pulled by a horse and sung about at Christmastime, whereas a sled is something that goes downhill under the power of gravity. And this event uses gravity to get the sleds going at up to 150 km/h, which I have to say is a whole lot faster than I was ever able to get going on a toboggan. The problem with the sport is that apart from the driver, once the start is over, everyone else is ballast, particularly in the four man event. Having highly trained athletes act as ballast is Bad. Luge: Jerry Seinfeld commented on luge suggesting a new sport, Involuntary Luge, where unsuspecting members of the public are taken against their will and forced to race down a luge run. Myself, I'm envisioning that Fat Old Guys In Three Piece Suits Luge would be even more entertaining. Of course, the Germans wouldn't go for that, I'm sure, and the Germans have dominated luge for years. The image of a stout German clad in Lycra travelling at 140 km/h down an iced track is somewhat disturbing. The image of two Germans lying one atop the other both clad in Lycra travelling at this speed is downright Ugly.
