PARK CITY, Utah - To most Americans, luge is not just a cult sport, but one that only the truly demented ever master. Few of us, after all, understand the desire to hurtle feet-first down a slope that drops nearly 40 stories at speeds approaching 90 mph. Germany's Hackl seeks luge gold

30-Second History

  • Luge (French for "sled") is one of the oldest winter sports and may have even started as early as 800 AD. Lugeing, or sled racing, began in Switzerland and European winter resorts, much like the formation of both bobsled and skeleton, which also use a downhill ice track. Luge is relatively new to the Olympic Games, having only been added in 1964 as a replacement for skeleton. A growing interest in luge started in the United States in 1979 with the construction of a refrigerated luge course in Lake Placid, N.Y., and the formation of USA Luge.
Timeline
The first recorded international sled contest. The International Sled Sport Federation was founded. The International Sled Sport Federation, renamed the International Luge Federation (FIL), joined the International Bobsled Federation, which governed all the ice-track sports until 1957. At a meeting of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), luge replaced skeleton as an Olympic sport. Skeleton was not added to the Olympic schedule again until 2002. The International Luge Federation separated from the International Bobsled Federation and became an independent entity. FIL joined the IOC the same year.

Who to Watch U.S. Hopefuls // Tony Benshoof (White Bear Lake, Minn.) also earned his first career World Cup medal, a silver, in the series finale. Benshoof, who earned a bronze medal at the 2001 World team competition, is a two-time U.S. national champion. He also holds the Guinness Book of World Records mark for fastest MPHs on a luge: 86.8. Becky Wilczak (River Forest, Ill.) enters Salt Lake City as the hottest of the three Americans on the international circuit - having recorded a second-place finish and two fourth-place showings in this year's World Cup events. She finished fifth in the overall World Cup standings this year. U.S. Luge Bios International Field // The German stronghold on international luge has permeated all phases of the sport so far this season. In men's singles, Georg Hackl appears primed to make his run in Salt Lake at becoming the first winter Olympian to win four consecutive gold medals in the same individual event. Austria's Markus Prock, a two-time Olympic silver medallist, won the 2001-2002 World Cup title. Italy's Armin Zoeggeler took the Olympic silver in Nagano and the bronze in Lillehammer. In the doubles event, the two-time World Champion German team of Alexander Resch and Patric Leitner figure to not only have to fend off the their countrymen Aandre Florschuetz and Torsten Wustlich, but also the Americans, Italians and Austrians. Germans again currently dominate the women's field. The reigning Olympic champion Silke Kraushaar won the World Cup overall title with teammate Sylke Otto earning the silver.

- Tyler Seitz of Calgary will go into the books as the first male Canadian luge athlete to reach the podium in the 26-year history of the luge World Cup, finishing third on his home track at Canada Olympic Park in Calgary on Saturday. The 26-year-old Canadian arrived at the finish line to a throng of screaming teammates and international competitors, after smashing the Canadian track record for the second time of the day with a time of 44.556, giving him a combined time of 129.286, and the first podium finish of his career. "This is completely unbelievable," said Seitz, who started luging in 1988, and has been leading the Canadian senior team since 1996. "Heading into the second run, I just told myself that I've done this run a million times, I know it, and to relax. What a great way to go out." Immediately following the race, Seitz officially announced his retirement from luge.

Weight, laziness made Suckow own worst enemy
Associated Press Feb. 5, 1998 Before Japanese writers dubbed Wendel Suckow the "Bullet Man" for his blazing performance last year on a luge run in Nagano, the former world champion had looked more like the "Michelin Man," spare tire and all. Almost too huge to luge. "I was not the model athlete," Suckow said. "I could sit on my laurels because I knew when I got on the sled that, even though I gave up time on the start, I could still make it up and finish fifth in the world. That's when you start lying to yourself and you start saying, 'Aw, I could've, I could've, I could've.' " Now, Suckow is just saying "I could." He's battled his weight problems and laziness and is geared up to try to become the first American to win an Olympic medal in luge. Suckow's career started to go downhill after he beat Germany's Georg Hackl to win the 1993 World Luge Championship in Calgary.

Street misses record, finishes sixth in Downhill behind German gold medalist
NAGANO, Japan (AP) - Talk about being low. Two years ago, Ann Arbor native Mark Grimmette and Brian Martin had to pay their own way to their first W Cup luge race. And last month, with the Winter Olympics looming, Chris Thorpe broke a bone in his right wrist while training with doubles partner Gordy Sheer. Talk about being high. On Friday, both teams won medals - Thorpe and Sheer the silver, and Grimmette and Martin the bronze - to break the United States' 34-year Olympic jinx in the sport. "I think breaking my hand helped," said the 27-year-old Thorpe, of Marquette. "It distracted us a little bit. We knew we were definitely at a disadvantage, and we started to go up from there." Some in the crowd seemed to be gasping for air as the last run began Friday with both U.S. teams in medal contention. "I didn't breathe for an hour," said Ron Rossi, executive director of the U.S. Luge Association. "A lot of people have been working for a long time, some of us 20 years, to get us over the hump." These four sliders have excelled in the sport like no one else before them in the United States. Sheer and Thorpe became the first team members to win a World Cup title, winning four races to lock up the 1996-97 title. And Grimmette and Martin succeeded them this year with a similar performance.

For the first time ever, the U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships head to the two-time Olympic village of Lake Placid, N.Y., just as the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City conclude. But even though the Olympic Center has not hosted this championship before, it is no stranger to hosting elite skating events. In fact, in the past six months the facility has seen some of the top skating stars in the world. The Venues A great place to start your Lake Placid visit, the museum gives a brief, yet informative taste of the Olympic history that encompasses Lake Placid. The museum also offers guided tours of the Olympic Center, providing a behind-the-scenes look at its history and on-going importance as a training and competition site. While figure skating is different from speed skating, the Olympic Speed Skating Oval welcomes people of all levels to give it a try. Situated in front of the Lake Placid High School, the Oval is open for public skating throughout the winter. Olympic bronze medal just a beginning for Palo Alto's Martin
by Keith Peters The journey that began on a paved road in Menlo Park, made a stop on a snowy mountain in Japan, is far from over for Palo Alto's Brian Martin. "I'm hoping it continues for a while; I'm not ready to quit," said Martin, who along with partner Mark Grimmette earned an Olympic bronze medal in the luge last week at the 18th Winter Games in Nagano, Japan. "I still like to slide, travel around . . . "I've only competed in one Senior Championshipdidn't do so well. It would be nice to have another shot at World Championships (in 1999)." Martin, at age 24, sees good sledding through at least age 30. "Right now, I'm pretty charged up," the 1992 Gunn High graduate said after earning his medal, "and I want to stay in. It's absolutely amazing that I'm standing on third-place (medal stand) at the Olympics." There's also plenty of room to improve. Martin and Grimmette, who came to Nagano as pre-Olympic favorites based on being World Cup champs, fell just short of their gold-medal goal in the closest luge doubles competition in Olympic history. Martin and Grimmette were the first to turn in their final run, clocking a two-run total of 1:41.217. Not only did the time establish a course record, but it assured the duo of no worse than a bronze medal, making Martin and Grimmette the first American Olympic medalists in luge doubles history.

musical scores and create a kind of ice ballet. The four Olympic Figure Skating events include the Ladies Singles, the Men's Singles, Pairs or Doubles, and Ice Dancing. Singles and Doubles have two distinct forums which are the Short Program and Free Skating. The Short Program is designed to demonstrate a specific set of skating talents . 2002 Olympic Bronze Medalist
    1998 Olympic Silver Medalist
There are very few athletes in history who can match the credentials, or longevity of slider Chris Thorpe. Now a veteran of the last four Olympics Games ('02, '98, '94, '92) Chris' trophy case includes both an Olympic Bronze Medal and an Olympic Silver Medal, not to mention a host of World Cup and National Championship hardware gathered over his seventeen year career. In all, Chris has won thrity-one international sliding medals - the most ever by an American. He's also the first American ever to win the World Cup Championship and by the way, his '98 Olympic Silver Medal was the first American Olympic Medal ever in the sport of luge! Chris' list of accomplishments goes on and on, and is full of firsts, bests, and fastests...but the one trophy that has eluded him thus far has been Olympic Gold. That's what motivates him to go on. "My first love is of the sports itself, the speed, the precision, really the challenge of competing in the most precisely timed sport in the world (luge is timed to .001 seconds). If it weren't for the passion I feel to compete, regardless of the medals, I would have long since retired. I'm just as hungry to win now as I've ever been, in fact ever more so, because now I know I can win gold."
Born in Illinois, Chris' family relocatd to Michigan when he was very young and it was there that he entered the sport of luge on natural ice tracks. Quickly showing potential, he was recruited to join the US Luge program in Lake Placid, New York. Seventeen years and two trips to the Olympic Medals podium later, Chris has become one of the sports "best-ever" and has one eye firmly fixed on a fifth trip to the Olympics in 2006. The other eye is now firmly fixed on his new born daughter Skylar (born March 13, 2002). Chris and his family now reside in Gainesville, Florida.

Swiss soars to fame with 2nd ski-jump gold
Compiled from Times wires published February 14, 2002 PARK CITY, Utah Simon Ammann was 8 when he first started jumping off a hill in the shadows of the Swiss Alps. He didn't fly, however, until coming to Utah. Ammann soared above the Wasatch Mountains and into Olympic history Wednesday, winning his second gold medal of these Games by surprising the field in the 120-meter event. The Swiss, who is 20 but could pass for 14, joined Finland's Matti Nykanen as the only jumpers to win both the 120- and 90-meter events in the same Olympics. Nykanen did it in Calgary in 1988.
