pets. llamas make excellent pets. Their gentle, submissive dispositionallows even young children to easily handle a welltrained llama.
http://www.tennllama.com/aboutllamas.htm
What Is A Llama? Llamas are members of the Camelid family. Their history dates back thousands of years when their ancestors evolved in North America. These Camelid ancestors evolved into two families: The Camel family of Asia and Africa:
  • Dromedary (1 humped camel) Bactrian (2 humped camels)
...and the Lama family of South America (Yes, only 1 "L") The Lama family consists of four species:
  • Llamas Alpacas Vicuñas Guanacos
Llamas and alpacas have been domesticated in South America for centuries and were of primary importance to the Inca culture where they were used as beasts of burden, food, clothing and a major role in religious ceremonies. (More History of Llamas) Llamas were first imported into the United States during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The most well-known person to import them into the United States was William Randolph Hearst. Only in the past 10 to 15 years have they become popular as pets, pack animals, guard animals, and for other uses. General Llama Information An adult llama stands approximately 3 to 4 feet tall at the shoulders and weighs from 250 to 300 pounds. The average life span of a llama is 15 to 20 years. Llamas are induced ovulators (they do not have a heat cycle like some other animals). Gestation (pregnancy) is an average of 350 days (about 11 and 1/2 months). A female can be safely bred back within 2 to 4 weeks after a normal birth.

Focus On Fun - Lots to learn from llamas
Caryl Krueger
North County Times
Ogden Nash once wrote a poem that goes "The one-l lama, he's a priest/The two-l llama, it's a beast/And I will bet/A silk pajama/There isn't any/Three-l lllama." Most of us will never get to see the "one-l lama," but we can see a "two-l" llama and learn a lot at the same time. These friendly animals, part of the Cameloid family (which includes the domesticated alpaca, and vicunas and guanacos, which are wild), are native to the mountains of South America and have been domesticated for over 6,000 years. However, you can call first and arrange to see a llama ranch in Escondido or Valley Center. Your family will truly enjoy the experience. We visited the Mountain Oaks Ranch in Valley Center, where Norma Stevens and Richard Thibert gave our group a good education and a grand tour, which included being kissed by a llama.

    Home About Llamas
Llamas are members of the Camel family. Technically, they are camelids. In the Old World, there are two different camels, the one-humped dromedary of the Arabian desert, and the two humped Bacterian camel of the Mongolian deserts.
In the New World, there are four different camelids. The " in genus Lama " (Llama) , the Alpaca, the " genus vigunae "( the Vicuña.) and the Guanaco. The Llama and the Alpaca are both domesticated animals and have been for centuries, the Llamas are used as pack animals, the wool for the production of fiber for rugs , blankets and ropes, the meat is pleasant to eat and cholesterol free, and is used successfully for the production of cold cuts. Llama dung is still used extensively in the Andes as fuel for warming and cooking due to it's very high calorific value. The Alpaca is used mainly for fine fiber wool production, meat, and the dung for fuel. In the United States, llamas are employed as pets, pack animals for treckers and golfers, and fiber production. Alpacas are used for pets and fine fiber production.

    LLAMAS, CERRO DE PASCO, PERU
Cerro de Paso is built over a silver mine and there are hundreds of silver and copper mines in the mountains around it. It is sit- uated about 14,000 feet above the sea in the bleakest part of the Andes, back of Lima, near the central western part of Peru. The town lies in a basin surrounded by barren rocks. Cero de Pasco is thought to be the crater of an extinct volcano. Though the town is is surrounded by great mineral wealth, it is, like most mining towns, very unattractive.

Average Length 4 to 7 feet Average Weight 200 to 450 pounds Outer Appearance Wool Common Colors Black, Brown, White, Red, Gray, Beige Average Life Span 11 or More Years Attention Needed Regular worming/yearly vaccinations Food Grass, Hay, Leaves, free choice minerals, llama pellets during last stages of pregnancy and lactation. Handling by Children OK Although llamas are not your average house pet, they can be wonderful companions. Natives of South America, llamas have been bred for their luxurious wool, used for farm chores, and been successfully domesticated. Known for their sure footing and strength, llamas have been long revered as excellent pack-carrying animals whose two-toed, soft-padded feet don't damage the environment the way that hooves or hiking boots do. Llamas range anywhere from $200 to $40,000, depending on the role the llama will undertake. Pets (companions) are less expensive than a stud whose potency will effect the future herd. Because there is no standard for llamas, a price of a llama depends largely on conformation, genealogy, a breeders preference, how the animal reproduces, and managing the number of llamas in the herd. Llamas are, however, extremely inexpensive to maintain. Llamas need some room to roam and adequate shelter for colder, hotter, or wetter days, but typically cost less to feed than dogs because of their efficient three-chambered stomachs and low protein requirements. Born grazers, llamas typically nibble on trees and a variety of plants, shrubs, vegetables, and fruits, as well as weeds.

    Why Llamas?
Llamas are a unique and versatile animal that can be used for many uses, including packing, cart driving, fibre, showing, pets and guardians.
    PACKING
There is enormous variety in the use of llamas for packing. Llamas may be used for short hikes/walks at local parks and trails with their owners or they may be fully loaded travelling across mountains on a weeklong outing. Whether you want a lunchtime picnic or a six-day hike, llamas make an ideal companion and carrier.
Llamas are more maneuverable and smaller than other pack animals and they can go through/over/under/into almost any area that people can. This is not true of other pack animals and gives llamas a tremendous advantage for hikers, hunters and park rangers.
    CART DRIVING
Llamas truly demonstrate their working ability with cart driving. Llamas can be trained to pull carts alone, in a pair or in a team of a few or even dozens of llamas. A pony cart can be used with a harness designed for a llama, but there are now carts designed to suit llamas. Carting is a wonderfully relaxing activity you can undertake with your llama.

Llamas and donkeys and cougars, oh my!
KRISTIN BRIGHTON Collegian Cougars prowl the plains of north-central Kansas, but not as freely as one might think. The Palecek family, of Munden, owns two cougars and an ark full of other animals. While the family's sheep, goats, llamas, donkeys and an occasional orphaned raccoon would not care about Senate Bill 47, a bill to regulate the ownership of exotic pets, the family does. Despite their love of animals, Kim Palecek said if they would have had to buy a license on top of the cost for the cougar and the $1,000 of initial veterinarian bills, they would have probably never got their female cougar, Tae Hoppie Yarrow. Cody Palecek gave his wife, Kim, the cougar for her birthday four years ago after paying $800 for it. If Senate Bill 47 is passed by the Legislature this spring, owners like the Paleceks would have to pay as much as $500 up front and $250 a year to own exotic pets. While she can see the need for regulations of exotic wildlife, Kim said she feels exotic pets can be cared for responsibly. "I feel like there are a lot of other problems than this stupid bill they are trying to get passed," Kim said.
