Llamas Versatile Animals That Can be Good Companions Granted, many people would not consider llamas as pets in the traditional sense. Strictly speaking, they would more likely be considered livestock, but they are friendly, social, calm and easily trained. Let's not forget how beautiful they are - they are dignified and agile, and have beautiful deep brown eyes and long eyelashes. Many times llama ownership arises from a case of "love at first sight." Of course, they are not for everyone, and given their size and needs are only appropriate for those with enough room to house them, and they should not be kept singly. Characteristics Llamas are social animals. If properly socialized they can make a very calm, gentle companion. They have a reputation for spitting, but this is more typical between llamas and usually not directed at people (unless poorly socialized). They make a variety of

Americans are taking home llamas as pets
Last modified at 12:11 a.m. on Saturday, September 13, 1997
Llamas are not just for petting zoos anymore. Americans are taking llamas home as pets in record numbers, Cynthia Jabs wrote in an article in the current issue of Country Living, with an estimated 100,000 in homes as pets - double the number four years ago. Llamas first served humans in their native mountains of Venezuela and Peru thousands of years ago as useful pack animals. Llamas then came to be prized for their wool. In some mountain regions they are kept with sheep as guard animals to keep coyotes at bay. But increasingly they are being purchased as companion animals or to show on the booming llama show circuit. Llamas are not pets in the traditional sense of the word. They can't be housebroken or even invited into a living room. They need a lot of outdoor space. Their food - both in quality and quantity - is closer to that of a pony than a dog's or cat's. Also, they have not been selectively bred for as long as horses, dogs and cats, so they're closer in behavior to their wild ancestors. Llamas have a very calming presence, said Morton Rosenberg, of rural Maryland. Tending his llamas is a relaxing escape from his pressured life as a litigating attorney, he said.

Home of the Brave "But those that wait upon the Lord
Shall renew their strength;
They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
They shall run and not be weary,
They shall walk and not faint."
Isaiah 40:31
Hello and welcome to Wind Dancer Farm Llamas. We're Jim and Cathy Ramsey, and we live on a small farm about 75 miles west of Houston, Texas. We share it with 25 llamas, a Papillon dog, 9 cats, 3 ducks, innumerable Koi fish, white tail deer, raccoons, opossum, armadillo, coyotes, lots of wild birds, and various other creatures. Jim has totally fallen in love with llamas, too! We've gone from having 2 companions to a herd of 25 llamas; breeding, showing, and living our lives with llamas as a central focus. We both still have full time jobs, but I now work out of my home running my engineering consulting firm. It has been a profound and wonderful lifestyle change. Most llama owners love their llamas like children. Llamas are intelligent, sensitive, curious creatures with big, kind eyes that reveal the wonderful old souls inside. Each llama has a different personality. Just like people, some are more intelligent than others, some are more outgoing, some are more head-strong. Some love to try new things, some just want to live their lives out calmly viewing the world around them. One of our boys will come up, put his head on my shoulder, and rest it there if he senses that I am upset about something. He will stand there forever, letting me scratch his jaw while I tell him my troubles.

Working/Harness Llamas
For over 6,000 years mankind has used llamas for purposes of packing and guarding flocks of sheep against canine predators. Recently, new recreational uses for llamas have been discovered and going for a cart ride on a quiet country road or into the back woods with a single llama or a team of two or even three - has become an exciting and rewarding way to enjoy llamas.
If we don't have llamas available for packing, guarding or trained to cart - we often will know who does - so please contact us.

Your are in the LLama Section LLAMAS T hese three are Starskey, Hutch and Becky.
Llamas are very calm and gentle animals.
But they don't seem to be real friendly. They need to earn peoples trust. This could take a while.
We have only had Llama for a little over a year now. so, we are still learning about them.
We got Becky (white Llama) at an animal auction.
She is very friendly.
We got Starsky and Hutch from a Llama farm called Reiland Farms in Tionesta Pa. These people are very helpful and informative with any questions I had about them.. The Llamas they sell are very healthy and beautiful llamas. All our Llamas get along great with Sybil.
but for some reason, Starsky (the darker Llama)
really likes sybil. Sometimes he will follow her and just stand over her.
