Running a business is never easy, but building an effective web site can often make a huge difference. We'll use this site to introduce our business and explain the goods or services we have to offer. People don't want to spend time figuring out what a business does, so our home page will highlight the most important features of both our business and our web site. We'll think of the home page as a kind of portal, giving customers the information they want at a glance, and offering lots of links to draw them in to the rest of the site.

Endophyte Toxins in Grass Seed Fields and Straw
Effects on Livestock
S. Aldrich-Markham and G. Pirelli
Both grass seed growers and livestock producers can benefit by grazing animals on grass seed fields and feeding grass seed straw. However, problems can develop if livestock consume turf varieties of tall fescue and perennial ryegrass. Some turf varieties are infected with high levels of endophyte, which produces toxins harmful to livestock.
What is endophyte?
Endophyte is a fungus that lives inside the grass plant. The relationship between grass and endophyte is symbiotic; that is, it benefits both. Although, the endophyte does not harm the grass, it produces toxins that are harmful to livestock. Since it does not affect the appearance of the grass plant, its presence can be detected only by laboratory analysis. Some grass varieties grown for turf seed have high levels of endophyte. The reason is that infected plants can have increased growth, increased drought tolerance, and resistance to certain insects-qualities for which plant breeders select. All of the forage varieties of tall fescue and perennial ryegrass produced in Oregon, however, are endophyte-free or have very low levels of endophyte. Breeders of forage varieties have been selecting out infected fields since the 1970s, when the connection between endophyte in tall fescue and a livestock disease called fescue toxicity was discovered.

General View of Agriculture
LIVE STOCK
THERE is not due attention paid to the rearing of the livestock in this island, either horses or black cattle, trusting to the importation of draught horses from Ireland, from which place young cattle are sometimes brought, the ancient stock of the country being of a small size The cattle of this island are observed to require but a short time to fatten when either in choice pasture, or exported to England; but the country appears better adapted for rearing of stock than fatting. When fatted, their average weight is four score per quarter, and in proportion to that weight have forty pounds of tallow, and sixty pounds of hide. Calving cows and heifers sell in the month of May from four to six guineas; dry cows and heifers, for fatting, from 3 to 5 ; oxen from the plough, from five to six guineas, and usually leave with the grazier from 2 l . 10s.to 3 In October and November, the principal slaughtering months, beef fetches at market two-pence-halfpenny per pound, and gradually rises to four-pence in winter, and through the Spring till June, when the earliest grass fed beasts coming in, the price lowers again by degrees. The Holderness breed hat been tried, but is not suited to the climate or grass. Cattle of a larger size than the stock of the island, have been imported from Scotland and Ireland; but on the whole, there are few well made cows, or capital milkers, in this country.

Using Partial Budgeting to Analyze
Drought Management Strategies
As drought conditions continue, increasing numbers of livestock producers will be faced with some critical decisions relating to their breeding herds. Without needed moisture, poor forage conditions and shortened grazing seasons will force producers to analyze different alternatives to cope with drought impacts. A partial budget is a valuable management tool used to analyze an incremental change in a given enterprise. By employing budget principles, a manager can compare the economic impact (costs and returns) of alternative drought plans. Partial budgeting is based on the principle that changes made in the farm or ranch business due to drought conditions will have one or more of the following effects:
  • eliminate or reduce some costs eliminate or reduce some returns increase some costs increase some returns.
  • The net effect will be the sum of positive economic effects minus the sum of negative economic effects.

    West Nile Virus
Your Computer is Safe, but Your Livestock May Not Be Foot and Mouth disease, Trichomoniasis, BSE, Chronic Wasting, Scrapie, and now West Nile Virus, recently the livestock industry has had no shortage of animal health issues. This article is to raise your awareness of West Nile Virus as something that may become a local issue in the future. An unknown virus was killing birds at the Bronx Zoo and in the New York City area. State-of-the-art diagnostic techniques were used to rapidly determine what disease agent was present and what risk it presents to U.S. animal health. It was announced that the virus was very similar to that of the West Nile virus, previously unseen in the Western Hemisphere. It was later confirmed the virus was West Nile and connected it to the encephalitis outbreak that killed 7 people and infected at least 55 others in the New York City area. Besides birds, horses are the other specie that has shown susceptibility to, and been diagnosed with, the virus. Clinical signs of the virus in horses included listlessness, stumbling and incoordination, weakness of limbs, ataxia, partial paralysis, or death. A fever is not usually observed. Horses affected by the virus need not be euthanized, unless they are suffering from an illness from which they will not be able to recover. Also, horses need not be quarantined, since infected horses do not appear to be carriers of the disease.
