Mission:
The major work of the Jesuit Communication Project (JCP) is to encourage, promote, and develop Media Education in schools across Canada. Media Education is concerned with "helping students develop an informed and critical understanding of the nature of the mass media, the techniques used by them, and the impact of these techniques" (Ontario Media Literacy Resources Guide, 1989). The Jesuit Communication Project is working in response to this call by providing a variety of resources and services for teachers, parents, church groups, school boards, students, and other interested groups.

Last revision : December 4, 2002. These are exercises I completed from November 10, 1995, to June 11, 1996, while I was reading Donis A. Dondis' A Primer of Visual Literacy (MIT Press, 1973). I picked this book up long ago as a graduate student at MIT when the MIT Press was selling off some of its surplus books. The title intrigued me. I read it through once around then without working through the exercises. More recently I picked it up again, worked through the exercises and was very impressed and pleased by the work they provoked. I find it a very thought provoking and useful book. I was also interested in the ways computer software could be used to simulate some activities required by the exercises in a more convenient, quick and/or economical way. See Exercises and Many exercises whose answers didn't fit this text and picture format, like those involving collage construction, or those whose answers I could scribble in the margin, are omitted here. When I first did the exercises, I recorded the solutions you see here using TeX. However, I now find HTML is a much more convenient and portable format. For the Internet version, the reproductions I don't have necessary permissions for are omitted, although all the references (including HTML links) are still present. I am trying to make up for these omissions somewhat by including links to visual material elsewhere on the Internet where appropriate and available. Also for the Internet version, I omitted one exercise and slightly altered another to protect people's privacy, and I omitted an exercise whose criticism of someone else's work was rather sharp.

    National Literacy Strategy: Framework for Teaching and The Literacy Hour An index for teachers
    The purpose of these pages is to publish an index for the literacy hour Framework for Teaching being taught in primary schools in the United Kingdom from September 1998.
    The indexes were created to help me in my work as a junior school teacher. They are intended to help in the following ways:
    • to provide a tool which would help give me an overview of the work that the children should be taught during the Key Stage;
    • to help me to link the work I am teaching to the work that the children have done before they come into my class;
    • to help me identify likely "gaps" in the children's experience. (Because the framework was not in place last year they may not have covered all the "expected" areas of work.)
    • to help me to decide whether activities or exercises from published books and other sources are relevant to a particular term's work or whether, even though they are on the relevant theme, they are more appropriate to another term or year.
    Now, in view of the information contained in the recently published Section 4 of the

    8 September 2002
    Literacy is a cause for celebration since humankind has achieved spectacular progress in this respect and there are now close to four billion literate people in the world. However, literacy for all – children, youth and adults - is still an unaccomplished goal and an ever moving target. A combination of ambitious goals, insufficient and parallel efforts, inadequate resources and strategies, and continued underestimation of the magnitude and complexity of the task, is likely to account for this situation. Lessons learnt over recent decades show, in any case, that meeting the goal of universal literacy calls not only for more and more effective efforts but also for renewed political will and for doing things differently at all levels: locally, nationally and internationally. In its resolution A/RES/56/116 , the General Assembly proclaimed the ten year period beginning 1 January 2003 the United Nations Literacy Decade.
