For guidance and inspiration, he turned to four historic documents, all concerned directly or indirectly with states' rights: Daniel Webster's 1830 reply to Robert Y. Hayne; President Andrew Jackson's Nullification Proclamation of 1832; Henry Clay's compromise speech of 1850; and the U.S. Constitution. Lincoln's initial effort was typeset and printed at the office of the Illinois State Journal, edited and then reprinted. Lincoln sent four copies of the second strike to his closest political advisors for commentary, resulting in further changes.

Biography

Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), 16th PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES . Lincoln entered office at a critical period in U. S. history, just before the Civil War, and died from an assassin's bullet at the war's end, but before the greater implications of the conflict could be resolved. He brought to the office personal integrity, intelligence, and humanity, plus the wholesome characteristics of his frontier upbringing. He also had the liabilities of his upbringinghe was self-educated, culturally unsophisticated, and lacking in administrative and diplomatic skills. Sharp-witted, he was not especially sharp-tongued, but was noted for his warm good humor. Although relatively unknown and inexperienced politically when elected president, he proved to be a consummate politician. He was above all firm in his convictions and dedicated to the preservation of the Union. Lincoln was perhaps the most esteemed and maligned of the American presidents. Generally admired and loved by the public, he was attacked on a partisan basis as the man responsible for and in the middle of every major issue facing the nation during his administration. Although his reputation has fluctuated with changing times, he was clearly a great man and a great president. He firmly and fairly guided the nation through its most perilous period and made a lasting impact in shaping the office of chief executive. Once regarded as the "Great Emancipator" for his forward strides in freeing the slaves, he was criticized a century later, when the Civil Rights Movement gained momentum, for his caution in moving toward equal rights. If he is judged in the historical context, however, it can be seen that he was far in advance of most liberal opinion. His claim to greatness endures.

Abraham Lincoln
16th U.S. president, who brought about the emancipation of the slaves, 1809-1865
I don't like that man. I must get to know him better. 'A drop of honey catches more flies than a gallon of gal.' So with men. If you would win a man to your cause, first convince him that you are his sincere friend. Therein is a drop of honey which catches his heart, which, say what he will, is the highroad to his reason. Character is like a tree and reputation like a shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing. Die when I may, I want it said of me that I plucked a weed and planted a flower where ever I thought a flower would grow. Surely God would not have created such a being as man, with an ability to grasp the infinite, to exist only for a day! No, no, man was made for immortality. The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise with the occasion. As our case is new, so we must think anew and act anew. Whenever I hear anyone arguing for slavery, I feel a strong impulse to see it tried on him personally.

Capitol Hill
Washington, D.C. Take a Lincoln-Related Photo Tour
Lincoln's connections to this building are varied and rich, beginning on December 6, 1847, when he took his seat in the Thirtieth Congress. During his single term as the lone Whig Party representative from Illinois, he lived across the street at Mrs. Ann Sprigg's boardinghouse. The Library of Congress now stands in this location, just east of the building. Lincoln as Congressman in the Capitol The House of Representatives that Congressman Lincoln knew met in a chamber now called Statuary Hall, where he worked with colleagues such as Indiana's Caleb Smith, Georgia's Alexander Stephens, and Pennsylvania's David Wilmot. House Members drew their seats by lot, and on December 8, 1847, Lincoln acquired desk location #191. If you search the floor, you will find bronze markers noting the desk locations of Members like Lincoln who became President. Soon after his arrival, Lincoln attacked the origins of the war with Mexico. On December 22, 1847, he introduced a series of resolutions called the "Spot Resolutions" which challenged President Polk to locate the place where American blood had been shed on American soil, provoking the war. His position proved unpopular among his constituents, and dogged him for years afterward. On February 21, 1848, Lincoln was present when 81-year-old Congressman John Quincy Adams collapsed, and was named to a committee to organize his funeral. On February 26 he attended the funeral in the House chamber and marched with the procession to the Congressional Burying Ground.

The Lincoln Legacy
It has been said that the three most researched figures in all of human history are Jesus Christ, Napoleon Bonaparte, and Abraham Lincoln. When the Berlin Wall came down, when Chinese demonstrators faced tanks in Tiananmen Square, when civil rights leaders marched on Washington, D.C., the life of Abraham Lincoln was held up as an example to all who would suffer, fight and die for freedom.

Tuesday, January 7, 2003 - Web posted at 9:58:43 GMT USS Abraham Lincoln turned back on trip home: US official SYDNEY, Jan 7 (AFP) - The White House has ordered aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln to abandon its voyage home and return to Australia, a US embassy official said Tuesday amid speculation the ship was to join a campaign against Iraq. The heaviest of the US Navy's aircraft carriers was several days into its journey to the United States when the order came from Washington for it to turn around, US Naval attache to Australia Dan Sloss told AFP. It arrived Monday at the port of Fremantle in Western Australia, along with the cruiser Shiloh. The two had berthed in Fremantle for six days over the Christmas period after spending six months at sea. "After the Abraham Lincoln left Fremantle and was headed towards Hawaii, the White House made some strategic decisions which resulted in a number of units, the Abraham Lincoln battlegroup being one, to remain available until it was clearer where things were headed strategically and globally," Sloss said. "I got a call from the seventh fleet on New Year's Day to say, 'We've turned the Lincoln around and we'd like to ask to come back in to port'."

Mary Todd Lincoln Fun Fact: During the Civil War, telegraph wires were strung to follow the action on the battlefield. But there was no telegraph office in the White House, so Lincoln went across the street to the War Department to get the news. Fast Fact: Abhorring war, Abraham Lincoln accepted War as the only means to save the Union. Biography: The government will not assail you You have no oath registered in Heaven to destroy the government, while I shall have the most solemn one to preserve, protect and defend it." Lincoln thought secession illegal, and was willing to use force to defend Federal law and the Union. When Confederate batteries fired on Fort Sumter and forced its surrender, he called on the states for 75,000 volunteers. Four more slave states joined the Confederacy but four remained within the Union. The Civil War had begun. The son of a Kentucky frontiersman, Lincoln had to struggle for a living and for learning. Five months before receiving his party's nomination for President, he sketched his life:

    Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), was President of the United States during the Civil War (1861-1865), which was the greatest crisis in U.S. history. Although Lincoln's primary goal was preservation of the Union, his leadership helped end slavery in the United States. Lincoln believed that the example of the United States proved to the world that democracy can be a lasting form of government. Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, second Inaugural Address, and many of his other speeches and writings are classic statements of democratic beliefs and goals. In conducting a bitter war, Lincoln never became bitter himself. He showed a nobility of character that has worldwide appeal. Lincoln, a Republican, was the first member of his party to become president. He was assassinated near the end of the Civil War and was succeeded by Vice President Andrew Johnson. Lincoln was the first U.S. president to be assassinated.

The life of Abraham Lincoln has been the stuff of legend in America for more than 130 years. The reasons that have made this so are many, the most important of which center on Lincoln the common man, "born in a log cabin," who would later, more than any other single individual, be responsible for saving the Union.
Born on February 12, 1809 in Hardin County, Kentucky, Lincoln's early life was one of the most modest means. Life was hard for Thomas and Nancy Lincoln, and their children Sarah, Abraham and Thomas. The youngest son, Thomas would die in 1812, and in 1817, after losing title to their land in Kentucky, the Lincolns would head to Indiana for a fresh start. Within two years, Lincoln's mother Nancy would become ill and die. Lincoln's father would later remarry, and Abraham would soon establish a strong bond with his stepmother, Sarah. The Lincoln family continued to be on the move, and in 1830 they established their first homestead in Illinois, the state that would later claim to be the "Land of Lincoln."
It was in Illinois that Lincoln would grow into and become the man that would be president. During the brief "Black Hawk War" of 1832 involving the Sauk and Fox Native American tribes, Lincoln enlisted in a volunteer company of militia and was elected captain. The war would be brief and Lincoln's service would last only about two and a half months. The self-educated Lincoln would take on several jobs, including ferry boat pilot, store clerk, surveyor and postmaster, before coming to his life as a frontier lawyer. It was as a lawyer that Lincoln would gain and hone the skills that would bring him into politics. He served four terms in the Illinois House of Representatives, and one term in Congress, before his famous run for the U.S. Senate in 1858. Lincoln had opened his campaign on June 16, 1858 with a speech that contained some of his most remembered and quoted words:

    Abraham Lincoln Walks at Midnight
It is portenous, and a thing of state
That here at midnight, in our little town
A mourning figure walks, and will not rest,
Near the old court-house pacing up and down. Or by his homestead, or in shadowed yards
He lingers where his children used to play,
Or through the market, on the well-worn stones
He stalks until the dawn-stars burn away. A bronzed, lank man! His suit of ancient black,
A famous high top-hat and plain worn shawl
Make him the quaint great figure that men love,
The prairie-lawyer, master of us all. He cannot sleep upon his hillside now.
He is among us:-as in times before! And we who toss and lie awake for long Breathe deep, and start, to see him pass the door. His head is bowed. He thinks on men and kings. Yea, when the sick world cries, how can he sleep? To many peasants fight, they know not why, Too many homesteads in black terror weep. The sins of all the war-lords burn his heart. He sees the dreadnaughts scouring every main.
