AN OVERVIEW OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN'S LIFE Abraham Lincoln was born Sunday, February 12, 1809, in a log cabin near Hodgenville, Kentucky . He was the son of Thomas and Nancy Hanks Lincoln , and he was named for his paternal grandfather. Thomas Lincoln was a carpenter and farmer. Both of Abraham's parents were members of a Baptist congregation which had separated from another church due to opposition to slavery. When Abraham was 7, the family moved to southern Indiana . Abraham had gone to school briefly in Kentucky and did so again in Indiana. He attended school with his older sister, Sarah (his younger brother, Thomas, had died in infancy). In 1818 Nancy Hanks Lincoln died from milk sickness , a disease obtained from drinking the milk of cows which had grazed on poisonous white snakeroot. Thomas Lincoln remarried the next year, and Abraham loved his new stepmother, Sarah Bush Johnston Lincoln . She brought 3 children of her own into the household. As Abraham grew up, he loved to read and preferred learning to working in the fields. This led to a difficult relationship with his father who was just the opposite. Abraham was constantly borrowing books from the neighbors. In 1828 Abraham's sister, who had married Aaron Grigsby in 1826, died during childbirth. Later in the year, Abraham made a flatboat trip to New Orleans. In 1830 the Lincolns moved west to

ABRAHAM LINCOLN 16th U.S. President The stories really are true: Abe Lincoln grew up on the American frontier, educated himself by reading borrowed books, and worked as a general store clerk long before he became the 16th president of the United States. His claims to fame are too numerous to list here; he is most often remembered for leading the Union through the Civil War and freeing Confederate slaves with the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation; for delivering the Gettysburg Address, the most famous oration in American history; and for his tragic assassination by John Wilkes Booth . Upon Lincoln's death, Andrew Johnson assumed the presidency.
Extra credit : Yes, that's Lincoln on the U.S. penny and the five dollar bill. In 1864 Lincoln named Salmon P. Chase to be Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Chase is on the ten thousand dollar bill... Lincoln was preceded by James Buchanan , the only president to remain a bachelor for life... Lincoln was the first president to be born outside the original thirteen states... He was the first president to wear a beard while in office... Lincoln's oldest son, Robert Todd Lincoln, was present at three assassinations: his father's, President Garfield 's in 1881 and President McKinley 's in 1901... A famous (and enormous) biography of Lincoln was written by 20th-century author

This made Polk the first president to run the country extending from the Atlantic Ocean all the way to the Pacific Ocean. It was during President Polk’s term in 1845 that the abolitionist and escaped slave Frederick Douglass wrote his autobiography, endangering his own freedom by doing so. President Polk believed that the United States had a "manifest destiny" to expand. His attempts to gain more of Texas, New Mexico, and California led to the Mexican War. The invention of the revolver by Samuel Colt helped the U.S. to win this war and gain five hundred thousand square miles of land. Polk had promised to serve only one term in office. C O L N Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 in a one room log cabin, located on a farm near Hodgenville, Kentucky (a state that permitted slavery at the time). When he was only 9 years old, his mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln, died. And a year later, his father, Thomas Lincoln, remarried a woman named Sarah Bush, who had a tremendous influence on the young Abraham Lincoln. To support his family, Abraham had to work at a neighboring farm, denying him the opportunity to go to school. So the total amount of formal education he received was less than a year. Although his formal education ended very quickly, his self-education was just beginning. An avid reader, he read everything he could get his hands on, studying a variety of subjects, such as mathematics, literature and law. Eventually, this self-educated man became a lawyer. Lincoln had a very strong desire to make a difference, so he entered politics. In August, 1832, he finished eighth out of thirteen in a race for the Illinois House of Representatives. Abraham believed the government should be a positive force, whose goal should be to serve the people. He reasoned, in order for him to have significant influence and impact on the government, he must achieve a high position in government - preferably the position of the president of the United States. This goal eventually became his burning desire.

Did Mercury in "Little Blue Pills" Make Abraham Lincoln Erratic? Hillary Mayell
for National Geographic News
July 17, 2001
Tales of the melancholia that dogged U.S. President Abraham Lincoln at various times during his life have been documented by historians and biographers and in Lincoln's own correspondence.
Whether he suffered from a full-blown case of what today is called clinical depression is unknown. What is known, however, is that for a while, Lincoln took little blue pills to treat his condition.
Known as "blue mass," the little blue pills were a 19th-century staple. They were prescribed for a host of ailments, including apoplexy, worms, child-bearing, tuberculosis, toothaches, and constipation. Statue in Lincoln Memorial

"Let us discard all this quibbling about this man or the other man, this race and that race, and the other race being inferior and therefore they must be placed in an inferior position...Let us discard all these things and unite as one people throughout this land until we shall once more stand up declaring that all men are created equal."
