Abraham Lincoln Lincoln warned the South in his Inaugural Address: "In your hands, my dissatisfied fellow countrymen, and not in mine, is the momentous issue of civil war. The government will not assail you.... You have no oath registered in Heaven to destroy the government, while I shall have the most solemn one to preserve, protect and defend it." Lincoln thought secession illegal, and was willing to use force to defend Federal law and the Union. When Confederate batteries fired on Fort Sumter and forced its surrender, he called on the states for 75,000 volunteers. Four more slave states joined the Confederacy but four remained within the Union. The Civil War had begun. The son of a Kentucky frontiersman, Lincoln had to struggle for a living and for learning. Five months before receiving his party's nomination for President, he sketched his life:

What's New Abraham Lincoln Links Smithsonian Institution Search Abraham Lincoln is widely regarded as one of the greatest presidents in history. Not only did he guide the US through the bloodshed and heartache of the Civil War, but he found time to try his hand at invention. Though the invention was never used, it shows the genius and varied interests of President Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln is the only U.S. President to invent and patent something. As a teenager, Lincoln took a boatload of merchandise down the Mississippi River from New Salem to New Orleans. At one point the boat got stuck and was set free only after a great deal of effort. In later years, while traveling on the Great Lakes, Lincoln's ship ran into a sandbar. These two experiences inspired Lincoln to invent. Lincoln received a patent (#6,469) for "A Device for Buoying Vessels Over Shoals" on May 22, 1849. The invention consists of a set of bellows attached to the hull of a ship just below the water line. On reaching a shallow place, the bellows are filled with air and the vessel, thus buoyed, is expected to float clear.

He begins his story by introducing a modern-day little boy who has a next door neighbor that looks just like Lincoln. This man not only looks like Lincoln, but he has many of the same likes and habits that our famous president had. Waber has made a connection for our young readers from the familiar to the more abstract. Threaded throughout his book are well-known facts about President Lincoln: his outdoor pioneer heritage, his love of books, and his occupation before he became president are just a few of these facts included in this book. Introducing the Unit Introduce your new unit about Abraham Lincoln by creating a word web of facts. Have your children brainstorm what they already know and organize their knowledge on a large sheet of butcher paper. Next, have your class read this book together. battlefield near Gettysburg, PA Four score and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth upon this continent a new nation: conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a great civil war. . .testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated. . . can long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

Abraham Lincoln Abraham Lincoln (February 12, 1809- April 15, 1865) was the 16th President of the United States of America. He served as President from March 4, 1861, until April 15, 1865 (he was re-elected in 1864). Lincoln's Vice-President was Andrew Johnson (1808-1875). Abraham Lincoln was born in a log cabin near Hodgenville, Kentucky . He had very little formal schooling and was mostly self-educated. He eventually became a lawyer and a Republican politician; he earned the nickname "Honest Abe." Lincoln married Mary Todd in 1842. During Lincoln's presidency, the Southern states seceded from (left) the Union because Lincoln and the Northern states were against slavery. Six weeks after becoming President, the Civil War began. In this war, the Northern states (which stayed in the Union) fought the Southern states (called the Confederacy). The Civil War lasted from 1861 until 1865. On Jan. 1, 1863, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which eventually led to the freeing of all slaves in the USA. During the Civil War, Lincoln gave many speeches, including the Gettysburg Address (Nov. 1863), a short speech in which he stated how a country must be dedicated to human freedom in order to survive. General Robert E. Lee (from the Confederacy) surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant (from the Union) on April 9, 1865.

Local legend about the us president, abraham lincoln, faking his death in 1865 in order to live a simple life away from politics and his wife.
    http://www.geocities.com/waylon_halen/
President Lincoln's Adventures in Weatherford, TX Weatherford, Texas is a small community located a few miles west of Fort Worth.  It's a place known for its long history of rich folklore and mythology.  Among the stranger tales to come out of this area is a legend about the United States President Abraham Lincoln. The local belief is that President Lincoln faked his death in 1865 in order to start a simple life away from politics and his wife. At once this sounds outrageously stupid, but before passing judgment let's review the whole story. What most of us have been taught is that President Lincoln was assassinated by an actor named John Wilkes Booth shortly after the Civil War had ended. For the official story of what happended next just click here
However some classrooms in Weatherford, TX have a twistedly different version of this event.  Many local historians claim that the body examined by these men could not have been that of President Abraham Lincoln. Their problem with the official record of the Lincoln autopsy comes in the form of a man named Alexander ( Billy Bob ) Hamilton who lived in Weatherford from 1865 to 1881.   Only known photo of Alexander ( Billy Bob ) Hamilton taken in the Spring of 1869 in Weatherford, TX
