About The Lighthouse Company
Welcome to the first and hopefully the most comprehensive page on lighthouses in South Africa. I have recently become addicted to these lights of the night and foggy days. It all started when a friend of mine took me to a Maritime Antique shop at the Cape Town Waterfront to introduce me to the manager who asked if I could make miniatures of lighthouses and that was about 2 years ago. This has been a real adventure for me and has opened new horizons as the research took me to book publishers, the Internet, where I found one site on Agulhas and of course the lighthouses of the world. Once I had been on a couple of trips and met a few keepers I was hooked, so here I am. I will endeavour to bring as much as I can to lighthouse fanatics. South Africa has 43 lighthouses in all. I have broken them up into regions starting at the West coast at Paternoster where the Cape Columbine lighthouse is situated, moving to Cape Town where there are a multitude of incredible buildings. Moving along the South coast to Port Elizabeth and East London and finally up East coast to Durban and up to the Mozambique border to the lighthouse at Cape Vidal. The Lighthouse Company invites those "mad about lighthouse" people to join our company to an adventure of lighthouses in South Africa.

Umpqua River Lighthouse, Winchester Bay , Oregon 1894 Owned by U.S. Coast Guard; present aid to navigation; grounds and lighthouse accessible to public. The original Umpqua River Lighthouse was built in 1857 to mark the entrance to the Umpqua River and to warn mariners of a deadly shifting sandbar that had caused numerous shipwrecks. However, this lighthouse succumbed to floods and rains and the tower collapsed six years after it was erected. It took 30 years until another lighthouse was built in its place. The present lighthouse was built in 1894 and stands to this day. A twentieth century pirate story took place in 1909 when French West and George Washington Wise boarded the Alaska Pacific Navigation Company liner Buckman in an effort to kill the crew, run the vessel aground near the Umpqua River and make off with a shipment of gold they believed to be aboard. Wise held the ships officer and helmsman hostage in the pilothouse while West went to rouse Captain Edwin Wood, who was asleep in his cabin. West killed him with a shotgun blast. The shot alarmed Wise, who ran from the pilothouse. The helmsman gave the alarm, which aroused the crew. In a shoot-out, West was wounded and he leaped over the side, never to be seen again. Wise was found cowering below deck and he was overpowered and turned over to authorities. He was sent to an asylum for the criminally insane. Ironically, the

Oldest operating lighthouse in the Pacific Northwest. Area has lots of history. Cape Disappointment received its name in 1778 from fur trader John Meares, who was looking for a river. When he decided that no river existed, he called the area Cape Disappointment. Lighthouses of the Pacific p. 135-6). The second shipment arrived in 1854 and then it took two more years to build at a cost of $38,500. This was more than 1/4 of the original amount of $148,000 allotted for the original 8 lighthouses for the West Coast. In 1864 received unwelcome neighbors when Fort Canby was erected to guard the Columbia River during the Civil War. Blasts from the big guns used to shake the lighthouse and occasionally break windows. During World War II, Japanese submarines surfaced off Fort Stevens on the South side of the river and lobbed in several shells at Fort Canby. The Fort is a Washington State Park and popular picnic and camping grounds. Early Keepers Stories: Joel Munson, keeper in 1860, upset by the many shipwrecks, decided to raise money for a life-saving boat by holding square dances in Astoria, where he played the fiddle and charged $2.50 entrance fees.

Printing this file several pages at a time will result in a finished product of higher quality and in a format that more closely resembles that on the screen. LIGHTHOUSE RESOURCE FOR GRADES K -4 THE SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES RELATE TO VARIOUS DISCIPLINES - ART, SCIENCE, LANGUAGE ARTS, MATH, HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY. GOALS 1. To familiarize children with lighthouses as aids to navigation. 2. To have students gain a basic understanding of lighthouse operation and the evolution of lighthouse technology. 3. To make children aware of the historic role of lighthouses and their current status. 4. To teach children the properties of light and how these are employed to enhance the effectiveness of the light signal. The Story of the Lighthouse Many, many years ago (thousands of years to be more exact), people lived m a very primitive wayboth hunting for and growing their own food (there were no supermarkets in those days, no stores at all!). Eventually they decided to explore the water in a boat to find out what the sea had to offer in the way of food. And, what did they find? They found fish and all kinds of other seafood: clams, mussels, scallops, oysters, lobsters, crabs, etc. During the day they could find their way back to the landing place by looking for a pile of rocks that had been left there.

  • The oldest existing lighthouse in the world is considered to be La Coruna in Spain that dates from ca. 20 BC. A Roman lighthouse is located on the Cliffs of Dover in Britain that was constructed in 40 AD. The first lighthouse in America was at Boston on Little Brewster Island (1716). The first keeper was George Worthylake who drowned, along with his wife and daughter, when returning to the island in 1718. The original tower was destroyed by the British and eventually reconstructed in 1784. The oldest existing lighthouse in America is Sandy Hook, NJ (1764) which is still in operation. There were 12 lighthouses when the United States declared its independence in 1776. The tallest lighthouse is Cape Hatteras, NC (196 ft. built in 1872). The most expensive lighthouse built in America is St. George Reef, off Crescent City, CA. It took ten years to construct (1882-1892) and cost $715,000.00. The Coast Guard abandoned it in 1972. The Lighthouse Service was created in 1789 by the 9th Act of the first Congress. Over the years, lighthouses were placed under the direction of Department of Revenue (this department was disbanded in 1820), Treasury (until 1903), the Commerce and Transportation. The Lighthouse Board (of the U. S. Lighthouse Establishment) held sway from 1852 to July 1, 1910 when Commerce created the Bureau of Lighthouses. The Coast Guard took over on July 7, 1939.

For Immediate Release: September 28, 2002 http://www.doi.gov/lighthouses Secretary Norton Announces Next 20 Lighthouses Available Under National Preservation Program - Lighthouses in every region of the country up for new ownership- WASHINGTON Interior Secretary Gale Norton today announced 20 lighthouses under consideration to be transferred at no cost from the Coast Guard to new owners federal agencies, state and local governments, nonprofit corporations and community development organizations. Located in every region of the country, the lighthouses are the second set to be transferred by Norton under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Program, which she launched with six lighthouses in June. "This program has proven to be one of the most popular ones ever at the Interior Department, " Norton said, noting that a hotline had to be set up to handle the volume of calls. "Lighthouses seem to capture our imagination and many people are devoted to their preservation. "One of the outstanding features of this program is that it puts nonprofits on an equal footing with government in becoming partners in preserving lighthouses," Norton noted. "Sometimes private groups can do more than the federal government. They bring their enthusiasm and willingness to work endless hours to restore something they love."

Could it be because they are so nautical? Maybe because they are usually so big? Or maybe it's just that they represent finding your way to a safe harbor, or a light in the distance guiding you in your journey. No matter what the reason, the popularity of lighthouses has been unwavering for years. I am no exception. For me, it's the nautical factor. I'm drawn to anything that speaks of the oceans, of sailing and ships crossing vast open waters in search of new adventures or making for home port.
