The STARLAB system is a portable teaching environment that can be brought right into the classroom. It consists of an inflatable dome, a projector, projection cylinders, and optional accessories. Easy to store and transport, the system packs down into traveling cases and a duffel bag. In fact, the STARLAB system is so compact that it can be handled by one person and transported in the back of most small cars. Once unpacked, STARLAB can be set up in under ten minutes. Available in two sizes (Standard and Giant) the STARLAB dome is made from a highly opaque, flame-retardant, reflective fabric. Its unique design and portability make it an ideal environment for interactive, hands-on, minds-on activities. See also Dome Specifications Technically advanced, yet simple to operate, the STARLAB Projector features a high-intensity halogen cycle lamp designed exclusively for the STARLAB system. It creates brilliant, precise images. See also Projector Specifications The Projection Cylinders are the secret to the versatility of STARLAB. These interchangeable, computer-generated mylar cylinders fit over the projection lamp to create vivid images on the inside of the dome. They make it easy to demonstrate the night sky, the inside of a biological cell, a global projection of the earth or colorful mythological characters. For more information on all of the current cylinders see

Before You Submit a Product to the Review

How to Enter the Review
Since 1995, NASA's Earth Science Enterprise (ESE) has sponsored an annual, external review of its education products. ESE education products are reviewed by panels composed of scientists and educators, including classroom teachers, NASA teacher trainers, and curriculum developers. This peer review provides NASA with information regarding the effectiveness of specific products and recommendations for distribution. The following guidelines were developed to help ESE education product developers design outstanding education materials.
Why Participate? back to top
The purpose of the review is to evaluate and select NASA education products for endorsement and national distribution. The review results are also used to determine the most effective distribution, such as through NASA teacher workshops. Participating in the review has several significant benefits, including:

CONTENT STANDARD A: As a result of activities in grades 9-12, all students should develop
    • Abilities necessary to do scientific inquiry
    • Understandings about scientific inquiry
    DEVELOPING STUDENT ABILITIES AND UNDERSTANDING
For students to develop the abilities that characterize science as inquiry, they must actively participate in scientific investigations, and they must actually use the cognitive and manipulative skills associated with the formulation of scientific explanations. This standard describes the fundamental abilities and understandings of inquiry, as well as a larger framework for conducting scientific investigations of natural phenomena. In grades 9-12, students should develop sophistication in their abilities and understanding of scientific inquiry. Students can understand that experiments are guided by concepts and are performed to test ideas. Some students still have trouble with variables and controlled experiments. Further, students often have trouble dealing with data that seem anomalous and in proposing explanations based on evidence and logic rather than on their prior beliefs about the natural world. One challenge to teachers of science and to curriculum developers is making science investigations meaningful. Investigations should derive from questions and issues that have meaning for students. Scientific topics that have been highlighted by current events provide one source, whereas actual science- and technology-related problems provide another source of meaningful investigations. Finally, teachers of science should remember that some experiences begin with little meaning for students but develop meaning through active involvement, continued exposure, and growing skill and understanding.

    Life in the Department
The Department believes strongly in dialogue between students, faculty, research staff, visitors and colleagues in other departments at Yale and across the world. This dialogue should begin early, when a student first explores the exciting dimensions of the field. Undergraduates are encouraged to work with faculty on research projects, culminating in a required senior project that exemplifies their skills and creativity. Beginning in the second year, every graduate student is required to give one talk per year to the general audience of the Department, and one to his or her research group. Students are encouraged to attend these talks, provide feedback to their classmates, and generally broaden their own perspective of the field. Social functions in the Department include monthly department-wide luncheons, holiday parties, and receptions at the beginning and end of the school year. Regular research colloquia also provide the opportunity to interact, and aside from the Perlis Symposium discussed earlier, also include the: Representative Publications Department Colloquium Series (in which distinguished researchers from other universities are invited on a monthly basis to speak to a general CS audience)

In it, students are challenged to help NASA better understand what types of life they should look for when the Mars Exploration Rover (MER) explores the surface of Mars in the future. The students take on the role of an astrobiologist and are responsible for reviewing research articles and creating a life form with features that might allow it to survive on Mars. They must share their findings with their class by doing a final report which reflects their knowledge of the extreme environments that exist on Mars and the features necessary for a life form to survive there..
