Introduction
This annotated enumerative bibliography dealing with the Lewis and Clark expedition is primarily aimed at material about the expedition rather than at primary material from the expedition. However, in reading about the expedition a reader will undoubtedly come across references to the various publications of the primary sources. Therefore, these sources are provided and annotated to give the reader the basic background information necessary to read intelligently. This bibliography is not aimed at the Lewis and Clark expert but rather at the student or person with little or some knowledge about the expedition. Students may find it useful in writing papers. Also, librarians doing collection development may find it helpful in selecting monographs. With the bi-centenial of the setting-out of the expedition coming up in seven years there is likely to be more reader demand for Lewis and Clark materials. In any case, there is a wide range of material to choose from something for the absolute Lewis and Clark novice as well as for the person who has already read a few Lewis and Clark books or articles.

The Topic:
Lewis and Clark Expedition Easier - The Lewis and Clark expedition (1804-1806) sought an overland route from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean. Harder - In February 1803 at the urging of then President Thomas Jefferson, Congress approved spending $25,000 (Final cost was $38,727) for a small U.S. Army expedition. Their assignment was to ascend the Missouri River to its source, cross the continental divide, and follow the Columbia River to its mouth at the Pacific Ocean. Jefferson chose 28-year-old Meriwether Lewis as leader for the group he called the Corps of Discovery. Lewis selected a former army comrade, 32-year-old William Clark to be his co-leader. The expedition began May 14, 1804, as the group left Camp Wood River (Illinois). The expedition returned to St. Louis on September 23, 1806.

Sacagawea
(c. 1790-1812 or 1884)
A near-legendary figure in the history of the American West for her indispensible role on the Lewis and Clark Expedition, Sacagawea has become an enigma for historians seeking to trace her later life. The daughter of a Shoshone chief, Sacagawea was kidnapped by the Hidatsa when she was about ten years old and taken back to their village on the upper Missouri. There, she and another captive girl were purchased and wed by Toussaint Charbonneau, a French Canadian trapper. When Lewis and Clark engaged Charbonneau as an interpreter for their expedition in 1804, it was with the understanding that Sacagawea would also accompany them. Aside from her value as an interpreter, they expected her mere presence to speak well of them to Indians they would encounter along the way. As Clark noted in his journal, "a woman with a party of men is a token of peace." Eight weeks before Lewis and Clark set out from the upper Missouri, a second token of peace was added to the expedition when Sacagawea gave birth to her first child, a son named Jean Baptiste Charbonneau but called Pomp or Pompey by Clark. Sacagawea carried her infant on a cradleboard as the "Corps of Discovery" headed upriver in April, 1805. Four months later, when the expedition had reached the navigable limits of the Missouri, Lewis set out to make contact with a Shoshone band, from whom he hoped to obtain horses for their trek across the mountains. When Sacagawea arrived to serve as interpreter, she found the band was led by her older brother, Cameahwait, who had become chief on their father's death. Deeply moved by this reunion, Sacagawea might have taken advantage of such an astounding coincidence to return to her people, but instead she helped the explorers secure the horses they needed and journeyed on with them and her husband to the Pacific.

by Susan Frederick Introduction Task Resources ... Conclusion
Introduction You are a member of the Corps of Discovery led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. President Thomas Jefferson has assigned the Corps the task of seeking a river route from the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean. In the process of seeking this route, you will explore the recently purchased Louisiana Territory. Your team will encounter wildlife and native tribes seen by few white people. It will be your job to communicate to the president about the geography and the plant and animal life of the North American continent. You must speculate on the country's economic future in trade with the Orient by way of the Northwest Passage. You also must explore the possibilities of fur trade with the native tribes. You must provide for the needs of the party on their journey and return them safely to St. Louis.
The Task You will choose a role as a member of the Corps of Discovery. In that role you will gather information to inform the president about one of the following areas:

Can I follow their exact route today?

What is the Lewis and Clark Trail?
It's a way of designating their approximate path through the future states of Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Washington, and Oregonand back. Because they traveled by river, and rivers have shifted their courses and been altered by dams, the "trail" is not exact. TO TOP OF PAGE Why did Lewis and Clark make this trip?
President Thomas Jefferson had long wanted to see what the lands of western North America were like. His scientific curiosity mixed with political interests. With the approval of Congress, he made plans even before the Lousiana Purchase was completed. He asked Meriwether Lewis, his secretary, to head the expedition and to selected his own co-captain. Lewis chose William Clark, who once had been his commanding officer in the army. TO TOP OF PAGE How good a guide was Sacagawea?

WASHINGTON Satellites are taking sharp-eyed snapshots of a trail traveled nearly 200 years ago that opened up vast expanses of the unexplored American frontier to the fledging United States. The heroic expedition led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark from 1804-1806 took the team across approximately miles 3,700 (6,000 kilometers) of uncharted wilderness. Now, satellite imagery is mapping their pathway to help reveal the contrasting ecological, environmental and cultural changes that have occurred over the past two centuries. Images
