" Our council's rates are too high, and we get nothing for them!' Says Who? “Base Stats”… you probably need them Headline grabbing about rates and services get Council management or other Council stakeholders nowhere. But how are the claims to be disproved…or proved for that matter?…who would know if they are right or wrong? Probably - you need the “Base Stats” reports. These reports are a comprehensive Council specific set of readable and interesting measures, over 100 of them. They are titled The New Zealand Local Government Base Statistics Reports – Base Stats for short. And they will do a whole lot more than merely inform any debate about rates and services. The reports, now in their fourth year of production, were developed to fill the information vacuum faced by those concerned with Council performance.

The purpose of this page is to provide a range of information collected from Government, academic and other research sources to assist people who are interested in learning more about water and its impact on health and the environment - and to encourage further inquiry into this fascinating subject. Often, when a person is feeling under the weather, people commonly suggest, "It must be something in the water." Many maladies are caused by waterborne contaminants or pathogens.

British Columbia/Yukon Manitoba New Brunswick Newfoundland/Labrador Nova Scotia Ontario Prince Edward Island Quebec Saskatchewan Cancer information Risk reduction Research Statistics ... BC/Yukon stats International comparisons It is instructive and useful to compare cancer incidence rates between populations. Such comparisons reveal similarities or differences that may provide the first step in developing hypotheses about the causation of particular cancers, through the discovery of associations between the incidence of the cancer and the prevalence of the putative causative factor. Examples of important hypotheses that emerged from comparison of population incidence data include dietary fat as a risk factor for colorectal cancer and hepatitis B infection as a risk factor for primary liver cancer. The data presented in this section are extracted from Volume 7 (1997) of Cancer Incidence in Five Continents , published by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). The age-standardized incidence rates (ASIRs) presented here, including those from Canada, are from the period 1988 to 1992, and are adjusted to the World Standard Population. For these reasons, the ASIRs for Canada in this section differ considerably from those presented elsewhere in this publication (e.g. in Tables 4 ); the latter are adjusted to the 1991 Canadian population, and include estimates up to 1998.
