Such comparisons reveal similarities or differences that may provide the first step in developing hypotheses about the causation of particular cancers, through the discovery of associations between the incidence of the cancer and the prevalence of the putative causative factor. Examples of important hypotheses that emerged from comparison of population incidence data include dietary fat as a risk factor for colorectal cancer and hepatitis B infection as a risk factor for primary liver cancer.
